This game's rep made everyone accept Nero, his initial reception was mixed, even negative, to some. But this game's "interpretation" elevated DMC 5 once it was revealed.
Peoples hate towards Nero when DMC 4 come out was more of fact that most players want to play as Dante, rather than he was a bad character. He wasn't perfect, sure, but not bad either. People was just afraid that Nero gonna replace Dante back then, that where most negativity comes from.
The interaction between the reboot and 5 is fascinating. How the later has actually given some catharsis and allowed people to engage with the reboot as its own separate thing.
Well whoever they are were idiots back then. Nero was always cool, except for the fact that I am so fucking tired of hearing Johnny Yung Bosch everywhere.
A black hole is a region in space where the gravitational pull is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape from it. They form when massive stars collapse under their own gravity at the end of their life cycles. Black holes can vary in size and mass, ranging from small, stellar-mass black holes to supermassive black holes found at the centers of galaxies.
Kyrie made a specific point about Nero in 4 she doesnt know anyone who is as human as he is despite his demonic arm and 5 made it clear she said he always knows which path is right and which is wrong so he clearly was not at all like Donte.
5:01 That is true actually, at the time when the developers were questioned about Dante's new design they said that the old Dante was lame, that the "drunk uncle" style was not cool anymore. One of the major causes of the backlash at the time was not the game itself, but the creators mocking the old games and saying that the new DMC was better. If they just kept their mouths shut, the game would probably had a better reception.
What’s weird about Donte is that if you wear the classic Dante outfit, then he looks like a weird cross between DMC4 Nero and DMC5 Nero wearing Dante’s clothes.
Did you know during the development, the director of this game has literally the same haircut, fashion choice and mannerism as Donte? Yeah, this is a self-insert game.
Matt McMuscles and Stop Skeletons From Fighting did a really good video breaking down what exactly went wrong with the Devil May Cry reboot. It came out during the era where Capcom was pandering to Western audiences at the expense of their Japanese audience and so their games were in a weird state back then. It doesn't help that Keiji Inafune, one of Capcom's most prestigious alumni, wanted Capcom to cater to Western gamers completely because he felt like Japan's gaming industry was in sharp decline back then. DmC's director, Tameem Antoinades, straight-up admitted in a pre-release interview that he thought Dante's style was dated and only appealed to a Japanese audience, while ironically making a redesign that caters to an American audience, specifically the Hot Topic, edgelord audience and said he didn't give a damn about how Devil May Cry fans felt about the reboot. In summary, it was a reboot made entirely through spite and ego.
I’d also like to mention that another serious breach to Vergil’s character in the hostage situation is the fact he’s not supposed to use guns. He doesn’t like them and thinks they’re “crude” and “unrefined”.
Yet he still uses a gun twice in the main franchise aswell... Other than that ... yeah this reboot is so far removed from the main games that its a sin to call it a DMC game
Oh don't get me started, after that I learned that from my boyfriend I had to take a long 30 minute break because I never seen a character so badly assassinated. Like how can they mess up probably the coolest demon character I ever seen into...whatever that was about? Let's hope daddy Sparda comes back in DMC6.

When the white haired wig part came up I would’ve found it somewhat funny if he just looked in the mirror and then took it off but the fact that he looks directly at the camera at us the players and says “not in a million years” that pissed me off.
another thing that bugs me about the reboot, is that Vergil has a KNOWN Distaste for guns, to the point he refuses to use one unless he has every intent to disrespect his foe, (Arkham) In this game, Vergil LITERALLY is the one that gives you all your new guns, and you first see him use a gun before he pulls out yamato.
4:54 Actually that is PRECISELY what the developer is trying to say. Like no joke, the director of DmC Devil May Cry actually said classic Dante isn't cool, so making Donte all edgy and such was his attempt at making Dante his definition of "Cool". And that cutscene with the wig really was him shitting on classic Dante
I mean, not quite. He thought the original character was outdated and wasn't as cool as he used to be. Which was still wrong, but maybe a bit more forgivable.
These are the same devs that openly called the original Dante design a "Gay Cowboy". In fact the hatred between devs and fans, the constant back and forth, it REALLY didn't do the game any favors either. Of course then in DMC5, Capcom gives Dante a cowboy hat weapon which felt like a shot across the bow towards the DmC devs about that comment.
There were things you neglected to mention about the combat that people hated. 1. The color-coded enemies. There are red and blue demons that can only be harmed by demonic and angelic weapons, respectively. Hitting them with the wrong weapon will cause you to stagger, breaking the flow of combat. 2. Lack of hard lock-on. You get a soft lock-on that allows you to attack whatever enemy is nearby. However, you can't change your target, meaning if you're being attacked by a shooting demon from a distance, you can't use your guns on it until a nearby enemy is defeated. 3. Style system. Unlike previous games, your rank system is based on how much damage you can deal. It makes getting SSS rank WAY too easy. You'll be relying on demonic weapons to get it. 4. Devil Trigger. When you use Devil Trigger in this game, enemies are sent flying, which limits your combos. It also freezes enemies. All of these would be rectified in the Definitive Edition.
I actually think Classic Dante does try to be cool, it just fails every time and we’re sort of in on the joke. Like his dorky ass trying to turn on the jukebox in 3, he’s only doing that to show off, it fails spectacularly, even the demons pause for a bit. Thats endearing, even the Smokin’ Sexy Style beast can botch it.
Yeah, but he actually is at times, like when he threw his sword down a tower, shot it, ran after it while shooting demons, caught it and jumped off, all while Devils Never Cry was playing in the background.
Dante IS cool, but not when he’s trying to be. When he’s trying to be cool, he breaks his jukebox, starts sneezing, gets eaten by space whales, and goes into debt to buy Lady a new chopper.
We love Dante because he's light hearted, that cutscene for 3 is meant to be seen as us as why he's lovable, the joke parts is the nice topping to the Pizza that is Dante.
"It feels like the developers were trying to say 'Well, my Dante is SO much better than that older loser Dante-'." The funny thing is... you're 100% right. It's not just conveyed in the game. In pre-release interviews and talks with the Director Tameem Antoniades and Producer Alex Jones (trust me, it's a different dude), they've expressed time and again how much "old" Dante was uncool now and their new version of Dante would be so much cooler because the new version would be more in line with the times. AKA, they followed trends, not what was actually cool. IRONICALLY ENOUGH, the Dante they made was nearly a decade late with the trends at the time. So, with all DUE respect to their piss poor attempt, I tend to call this version of "Dante" DiNO. ViNO for this game's version of Vergil.
Right. I hate how they insulted the fans and the OG Dante. That's why I will never touch DmC. And gee, guess who and what was voted favorite character and game by Capcom fans....OG Dante and DMC5.
@@justsomenobody6740 Lol, yeah. Worst thing is, if they would have kept their mouth shut and/or made it a brand new IP, the game probably would have been seen as some lost cult classic that emulated Devil May Cry combat. Such a waste, really.
If Capcom hadn't marketed this as a reboot that replaced the OG games or heck even as a new IP people would've been a lot more happier, at least DMC 5 happend.
They basically took Dante's cockiness and Nero's angst, cranked them both up to obnoxious levels, and shoved them into one character. I don't even want to know how bad a DmC Nero would have been.
Weird how people say first two DMC games aren't that good, yet this reboot is quite pointless. I honestly like this game as DMC as well, it tells a more grounded story. The way Dante changes into a much better and caring person is great character develpment and makes him feel more human. I've recently played DMC5 expecting to be much more polished, but i still ended up enjoying the fighting of the reboot much better, it just feels so smooth.
Honestly they only need to tweak Dante and Vergil character a little bit (you know makes Dante less edgy and makes Vergil more Vergil) and treat it as some kind of prequel of how Dante aquire his white hair (as symbol of him awakens his demon side)
@@sleepyyAshh I mean you could be right, they originally wanted to keep this reboot as close as possible to the original series but Capcom "suggested" that they go all out with it.
PFF. Yeah about that. This technically wasn't the first draft. Capcom ceos somewhere along the line made the infamous "final draft" People have found cut audio files of Kat virgin and donte having actual conversations to give you an idea of their characters, which capcom BLANTANTLY removed

About halfway through the video, and your line-up quotes of all the weapons like the power of Spinjitzu and axing the demons a question was a delight. Got me smiling. I'm glad that gameplay-wise the game was fun for you, and i quite enjoy the video myself. I've left this comment to a few people in the comment section here and there, but to leave it in a more general way: The character action game Soulstice from 2022 is very much worth a look. Has taken some gameplay inspirations it seems from DmC, DMC5 and Bayonetta, tone and writing cues from Darksiders, some other inspirations from manga like Berserk and Claymore, new ideas on the "Devil Trigger" state such as different Alignments which have an effect on the way this Rapture State as it is known functions, and it's not as easy as DmC either. There's some more special things to Soulstice's "Devil Trigger" modes, too. Good story and writing, first or middle third may feel slow, seven total weapons, mix of a Style and Devil Trigger meter, a skill tree for your dead ghost sister's skills that can give full currency refunds, generally solid enemy roster (bar 3 out of the over-twenty-total enemy designs) that can influence each other too with aggression buffs and shields, quite good bosses, controller button remapping, colorblindness options, and I just really like it. It does have a kinda divisive central mechanic with the Banishment and Evocation fields: basically color coding but with casting forcefields around yourself instead (Banishment is Red, Evocation is Blue). Does make all the seven total weapons viable for any enemy, with some having dedicated strengths against specific types such as the whip being low-damage wide rapid stunning hits to unprotected enemies, punch daggers supplying concentrated rapid stunning hits with a good launcher that puts you in the air as well, the warhammer being good to destroy shields, the big fist for armor, and some more. (all weapons also have some subtle differences in behaviour compared to one another). Thing is, there's a kind of timer for how long a Field can be up. You gain more "time" by continuously hitting colored enemies though and later skills make it more managable, but i've seen people say they dropped it because of this mechanic. If you decide to check it out, or some other reader, i wish you a lot of fun on Soulstice!
I think what made the og dante so good was that despite what he’s been through and what he’s experienced he’s still able to smile and crack jokes staying to his humanity
Remember, this is the game that decided to canonically establish that Vergil has a bigger dick than Dante. And I don't even know what's worse: That this game decided that was an acceptable quality of dialogue or the fact that Vergil, cool collected samurai-inspired Vergil, said that line. I'm genuinely impressed, I can't think of a single line that could go against everything his character is about more.
Whats worse is that you are using the word "cannon" while talking about this game as if a similiar name is all that is needed to make any lore "cannon"
wdym like FOR DMC5 we want you experience the Glory, its the obligation to finish what you started and you will love it to the end. But thanks for the Video Cyan
I remember playing this for the first time, struggling with Virgil, then hearing Dante say “it’s not too late” and saying (at same time as Vergil) “YES IT IS”
With the original series still continuing after this reboot, i started to like this game, kind of. Despite the "dirty" re-characterizations and the embarrassing dialogue, the gameplay is still fun. I recommend getting the Spanish dub mod for anyone who has this game on PC. I'm sure you don't want to miss this: "Mi nombre por cierto el Donté" Donté, le exterminador de demonios
Personally one of the reasons I think this reboot is so hated even now is because of one Tameem Antoniadias (sorry if I spelled that wrong.) For those who don't know this man was one of the leads of the project... And He was EXTREMELY antagonistic towards the fanbase. Like it almost felt like he hated the original series going as far as to say that the original Dante was a gay cowboy and if he walked into a bar he'd get laughed at. He almost acted like the reboot would be the first good game in the series with how his attitude was. which granted it is admirable that he stuck with his guns on this game but seriously this man was just very petty at points. Keep in mind at this point in time ninja theory the studio that worked on this game didn't really much of a pedigree at this point in time.
Tameem never said dante was a gay cowboy, that was just a slide that they showed during a presentation that was shown by the artist of the game. Sure still a lowblow but it was never said by tameem or in words at all.
From what I hear, they also got kind of screwed by Capcom. They had originally planned to do something closer to the original series, then Capcom told them to make it different. I seem to remember hearing that they said something to the effect of "If we wanted the same thing we've been doing, we would just do it ourselves." So I'm not sure how much of the PR mess was just them trying really hard to double down on what Capcom was making them do.
Thank you for that correction. I sometimes accidentally fuse those parts together due to his actions at the time so I apologize for the slight misinformation.
This was my first Devil May Cry and I don't regret it. Of course now that I have play it again after these years, I can see the problems that it had. that said, it still holds a special place in my heart with all of the memories I had with it.

11:15 ... Man i can see why she ain't like the rest of succubuses, she gets no pray with whatever is going on with her.
Hyve Minds released a video on DmC:DMC barely half a day ago that goes into much more depth. Recommend checking him out.

"It feels like the developers were trying to say 'Well, my Dante is SO much better than that older loser Dante-'."
The funny thing is... you're 100% right.

I'm genuinely impressed, I can't think of a single line that could go against everything his character is about more.

And he would still be better than the developers of saints row 2023. Not to mention, that he is done with it and moving on
Maybe the scene of Dante dancing with a cowboy hat on DMC 5 is a reference to that
