You're in my state of Ohio! Yahoo! I'm in Cleveland. Nice to hear about Barberton. If you ever come to Cleveland, Misha, check out the West Side Market. You can find some interesting food to cook for yourself. I think it's still there it's been a long time and we have the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame. Ya can't eat it but it's culture.
I have been enjoying the show, but was really confused by what Misha chose to cover about Rhode Island. Just because one politician from Warwick Neck decided we were the calamari state, that became the focus of the show. Before that we were known as the Quahog state, which makes a lot more sense. Fried calamari is an appetizer on most mid-level restaurant menus here, and our southeast Asian population lives off of the squid they catch in the bay, but that's about it. There's not much variety in how it's served, and not much celebration of the squid in our local cuisines. It's Saturday night at the pub kind of food. Ask any Rhode Islander what the difference is between a quahog, a steamer, a cherrystone and a little neck, and you'll get a thesis on which species is best for which recipes. We know our clams! Our pre-European contact indigenous population relied heavily on the quahog, as did the early colonists, and our more recent Portuguese and Italian fishing populations. We have a mix of Italian, Portuguese, French Canadian, and Irish food traditions here ... and Misha did an episode on calamari. (I did love the interlude with his mom; I want to be her friend!) I'm wondering if people from other localities he has covered have had a similar reaction. I loved his coverage of the Vietnamese and Cajun food in Houston, TX; the focus on that particular population was really interesting. But I wonder if folks from around there felt it was representative enough. Misha did find some great sources to interview, once he got past the politician. Maybe I'm just annoyed that he chose something very white-bread to explore in RI, when there are much richer topics.
