    Kyle! I’m so happy I found your channel!!! Professor Valverde was my professor at UC Davis and was one of the best professors I’ve had and opened my eyes sooo much to the Asian diaspora. She made me reflect a lot about my life growing up, my parents and others around me. I’m sooo happy there is someone who dedicates their time to travel and document the history of us Vietnamese!! Can’t wait to binge more videos. :).

    I've just started watching your videos and I'm enjoying the personal stories. It's amazing to me how many people in the neighbourhoods you're searching have such good memories about the people that lived around them and so long ago!! You can tell that family and community are very important to most of them. I hope you're able to continue this work as it seems to be something you're meant to do at this time in your life. I will spend the next while, watching and crying as I go through these personal journey's. Thanks again.

      Don’t trust 23andme, they either dont have Vietnamese category or got it all wrong. Vietnamese is diverse, there are 54 ethnic in Vietnam, Kinh ethnic is the major of the population even Kinh is also a mixed from other ethnic.

      @leet3298 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bé Châu Phi
      They actually got my ethnic makeup fairly accurate and were able to recognize my family members. So I'm not quite sure what you mean? They aren't that specific because there isn't enough of a database for Vietnamese people yet... But as they get more samples they are improving ethnic makeup.

    Whenever I hear about these DNA tests, a question comes to mind: What criteria does it use? If I ever got past that question, an even bigger issue comes to mind: The results show NATIONALITY, not ethnicity. Nations are defined by borders. Borders are man-made and can change at will. If my results show my nationality (Vietnamese, Chinese, etc.) and the border changes, does that change the result of my "DNA?" For example, Germany borders Poland. I do a test and it shows that I'm 50% German and 50% Polish. Decades from now, something happens, and Germany annexes Poland so that the entire country of Poland is now a part of the new Germany. Consequently, does that now make me 100% German?

      Actually most of south Vietnam belongs to the Champa Kingdom. Not Khmer. Theres a bunch of Ancient Champa temples and artifacts to prove this. Khmer kingdom at one point did invaded and took over the Champa kingdom that is now South Vietnam, but that land was never Khmers to begin with.

      tamar tamar Imperial China has dominated Vietnam multiple times over the last 2300 years. Han Chinese are living all over the world, not just in countries with a shared border. So plenty of chances for inter-marriage under all kinds of circumstances.

Last year when I saw your video I didn't think you were full Vietnamese I thought your family background/ancestor has other asian ethnicity..like me I'm Khmer(Cambodia), Chinese, Siam(Thai), Laotian, and maybe Indonesian or East Indian(dad's dad side of the family/ancestor) not too sure..I was thinking of doing DNA testing myself too..I really enjoyed your videos on how Asians lives in other countries that I might not expect to see or heard of it? If it wasn't your videos, like Africa, Europe, Brazil etc...Please do more of it, I really enjoyed it and just amazing how Asians are everywhere in those continents...💖❤️💗

    Another DNA test distinguishes between southern and northern Chinese. I have no northern Chinese DNA but southern Chinese DNA and SE Asian DNA. If you studied Vietnamese history, the capital of the Trieu Dynasty was Guangzhou and that entire region consisted mostly of Dai people.

    Vietnam was invaded and occupied by China in ancient times so that should be easy to explain. A lot of Vietnamese got Chinese blood. A man who travels the world yet get off in Sacramento instead of San Franciso which is right across the bay from Oakland. I was in San Franciso in 1997. I took the train over to Oakland. That's when I realized what Mark Twain meant when he said "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Franciso." I was there in the month of August. I needed a jacket. But in Oakland I felt like I was really in California. Anyway years later I did visit Sacramento when the Terminator was governor. I had to visit to see if the place for myself. I think it got more in common with Oakland than with San Franciso. That's an interesting story about going to Vietnam and being followed around being told she cannot be protected. Now Vietnam moved to a market economy so they opened up tourism and rely, in part, on tourism revenue. The only people who follow us around now are the shoeshine men and vendors who want to ply their trade.

    From your facial feature, you are a mixture of Han Chinese and Austroasiatic Muong or Khmer.
    These so-called genetic tests are a scam. Vietnam has 54 ethnicities, China has 56 ethnicities so there's no such thing as Vietnamese ethnicity. Vietnamese is a nationality and not ethnicity, the same goes with Chinese.
    These genetic tests group people based on nationality and not ethnicity which is grossly wrong. It's just like saying that blacks and white in American have the same genes just because they are from the same country. LOL.

    Looking at a map, it would appear the proximity of Vietnam and China is so close with only a border separating the two regions. Therefore it would be perfectly normal for the two DNA’s to be alike. The only differences would be cultural. To say they’re different is like saying one’s DNA is either America vs Canadian. We’re the same region.

    1. Skip to 25:18 for the DNA test
    2. From my Vietnamese teacher, who grew up in Vietnam and is knowledgeable on history:
    "About 400 years ago, it was the final years of the Ming Dynasty (in China). There were a number of military soldiers & officers who did not want to surrender to the Manchurians. The made a request to the King of Vietnam to allow them to resettle in VN. King Gia Long allowed them to resettle in the southern part in the 6 provinces. They came down to live and lived among the Vietnamese. They married with the Vietnamese and had children and grandchildren, who were called "Ming xiang Ren" or "nguoi Ming huong" (Ming Homeland people) because their ancestors had come from the Ming Dynasty. From then on, Chinese people living in Vietnam were called , generally, "hoa Ren" or "nguoi hoa."
    VN (xin loi ko co dau phong)
    Lich su cua nguòi hoa dên VN.
    Uoc chùng bôn tram nam truóc, khi dó cuôi trào Minh, Man Thanh thông tri Trung Quôc. Có môt sô quân si cua trào Minh không chiu dâu hàng chính phu Man Thanh. Hoa kiêu= first gen, not born overseas. Kieu means "chiao" or "bridge".
    Nguoi Hoa= descendants of Hoa kiêu.
    Descendants of Viet kiêu in America= nguoi My góc Viet. (Góc means root)
    During the Ching Dynasty, Chinese people have moved to Vietnam for other reasons: work, industry, to join family members, and also as refugees. Chinese people often came to Vietnam by boat, and became known as "nguòi Tàu." Tàu is a colloquial term for Chinese.

      google "23 and me" or "genetic testing" or try youtube. There are various other companies online that do genetic testing. They are all comparable, but you should watch some other youtube videos of people doing the various tests. They have videos doing comparison between the companies. Beware also that insurance companies may deny medical coverage if you have genetic diseases/conditions, so think about it a little before doing a test.

    A little bit of Viet history
    More than two thousand years ago, there were hundreds of Viet tribes (Bách Việt) who inhabited from the middle of present China to the South. Because they were smaller in numbers and not united than the Han, they were invaded by the Han, one by one. Of course, some of them stayed, some scattered down to the South. Only one tribe survived and has been being an independent country after about one thousand years of colonized, that's the Lac Việt (Vietnamese).
    Since then, Việt Nam has successfully expelled several invasions from the North. The most success was in 1789 when Vietnamese under the command of Nguyễn Huê destroyed the invading Chinese army. Nguyễn Huê planned and prepared to invade China, his first move was asking China to return Quangdong (Quãng đông) and Quangxi (Quảng Tây) back to Vietnam as they were part of Vietnam before.
    Thus, I guess some of Chinese have part of Viet in their blood, and vice-versa.

    • @simonhe8014
      @simonhe8014 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ntta if you say Vietnam area was colony of China for a thousand years, you can say China has colonized guanxi and guangdong for two thousand years,then you can say Vietnam has colonizd south of Vietnam for more than 300 hundred years . In our opinion, you made rebellion ,when mainland china was in chaos.
