The coolest time to go out to the pad was at sunset. They often timed the rollback of the service structure to coincide with that time of day, so we went out there and watched the reveal of the stack as the sun went down. Just a gorgeous time of day for photography. The biggest photography award I ever won was with a photo of Atlantis on the pad just after the sun had disappeared below the horizon. The sky was full of reds, oranges, and purples. It also included that same dead tree seen at the 21:19 mark. Now, even though sunset was a great time for photography, it was also the worst time for mosquitos! We had one guy in our group who was allergic to insect repellant. He was in agony before we returned to the press site.

I remember those big reveals of the orbiter after the RSS rollback, throw in a nice sunset and the moment was truly magical.

@@Shuttlesource Absolutely! I also loved being there at night before a launch. Standing next to the countdown clock, I could just watch the beautiful scene across the swampland of the launch pad lit up by the huge lights. You could see them piercing the sky from tens of miles away, and more.

I'm happy @shuttlesource never adds some pregnant with meaning or sterling or sad music to this videos. The pictures are always speaking for themselves. ❤

My cousin was the pilot on STS-29. I was there to see it fly. STS-29 was not Atlantis. It was Discovery.
