Standard tie rod mod for VWs is to slip a bit of round bar down the inside of the tie rod. Stiffens the tie rod up nicely. Beetle sway bar works well. Love your show.
Man i love watching your videos with my kids on a saturday morning and this is the collab the world needs!! Both channels have helped keep me going over the years while i struggled with my health and given me something to aim for. I'm in hospital for surgery on monday, hopefully after i've recovered i can crack on with getting out camping with my kids like you cats!
@@KarstanAndMaxine thanks guys! I'm in the UK but i've got family in Perth that i haven't seen in a while so a trip out there is definitely overdue and would be the best way to put 5 years of being practically housebound behind me. Would be awesome if my girls could meet their saturday mate zuzu too!
Karstan, you remind me of my old man mate. We all jumped in a XA falcon back in the 80,s and drove from Perth to Darwin and back. He didn't care where he took it or what broke because he could fix anything, all because he wanted to give his family an adventure and live life in the moment. 👍
Both vehicles are such characters, so sick. I had a good laugh at Karstans smile to the camera when he tells Zuri " he didn't have a point to start with"
Went out to the jump up in 2007. There was a rock ledge that appears to have been filled with loose rock. When I saw the alloy casings and gear oil on the ledge, I turned around. Awesome landscape. Totally unique. I love it how you both just persevere. Well done.
Hi Pat, loved watching this episode of Karstan and Max. Great to see you guys and your rig in it. Wondering if I can get any information on your welder and what you use to power it please? Cheers we are currently in a build ourselves and would like to set up something similar. TIA
Exactly how I drove my 72 Westfalia when I was 18 yrs old. I took it everywhere most people would not. I drive a bj60 for the last 20yrs but I still miss my van. cheers!
Hi guys. I just realized I can hold my breath for about 7 minutes. Fair go mate, that was pretty intense. Saw one of those Unimogs for the first time, up close and personal up in Hamilton, last year. A bit of a beast eh?? Quality viewing there guys. Thanks for the upload. From across the ditch here in Nz, all the best.
Another great adventure. Reminds me of my buggy days with my mate. We had two old beetles that we chopped and lifted to drive round the Arthur River Recreation area ( n/w Tassie ) with our young families. We only used bits and pieces of junk and other car parts to keep them going but they did the job. We bent the tie rod tubes often and a good tip for you we used to cut up old front sway bars and insert them inside the tubes before screwing in the tie rods. They are spring steel and support the tubes to help them stay strait. They may bend a little but not as much as what yours did. Also to remove the tie rod from the steering joints don't hit the nut or thread use two hammers one each side of the casting and hit at the same time on opposite sides of the casting and the taper will pop out on it's own usually but putting a bit of pressure under it with a screwdriver as you do it will help as well. Keep up the good work hope your on the road again soon.
Loved this episode. You guys crack us up. We’re at the jump up at the start of the year ourselves. Awesome spot. And once again. The Rig getting it done 👌👌👌
I love the Kombi. Unimog is sweet too. I have a 67 split window and I am wondering how you got the lift you have? What size tires are those? I always tell people the vw bus is extremely capable offroad even in its stock form...
hey guys out of all the off-road adventures in the world i think you 3 would be the most awesome people to go adventuring with, your down to earth you do things with the least equipment, and it all done in 1 wheel drive every other channel on you tube have big budget 4x4 builds with all the luxury but not you, you prove with a bit of guts and little cash anything is possible i admire your life and inspires me to hit the road as well thank you for keeping it real
Your right. The Unimog WAS built for that kind of punishment. Just have a look at the structure under a Unimog. My olds had a Combi for a while while I was growing up, and while they didnt do anything like you did with yours, it was versatile and better than expected offroad. I remember it was surprisingly capable as a 2WD off road. Combi do have one nice point. With one slight mod, cutting the lower boot catch bar and making it a bolt in solution, it was VERY easy to just slide the motor out for working on. Enjoyed the Vid. Thanks for the show.
I so miss that joint when I lived there I'd take my tinny over the jump up with the cruiser and head up as far as you go and camp Brings back so many good memories well done
Wow that was an adventure +, major repairs on the step up, wonder if you's are the 1st. A Kombi out doing a Monster 4B bloody fantastic, guess you can see why the Hippies love em, it's a near go anywhere 1 Wheel Drive. Thanks for the entertainment & showing us the Raw Beauty of our Island.
Another awesome video, that Kombi is unbelievable. The Unimog is also an awesome vehicle but height of this one is scary. Loved this one. Keep them coming

Also i was wondering if you could make a playlist of all the music you have on yout episodes they are the best tunes .
Looks a little different from when seen it last! Used to be proper nasty rock at the top of the first bit which would clean up a door or 2! Good to see it more accessible now! 🤙
The old air-cooled VWs do well off road. I've taken my FWD V6 Honda Odyssey into some let's say unexpected places. Was coming back up out out of one track and past a bunch of hunters going in in their 4wd, look on their faces was classic, I will admit it was winter but reasonably dry. You just need to be aware there's traction till suddenly there's not... Incidentally farmer we know, the Honda is the only non 4wd that can make it up the track from his implement sheds apparently his Mrs told me.
@@KarstanAndMaxine wow okay cool , I’m a vw nut or hobbyist and know lots of people in the game but never heard of that guy ,vw crisis and I’m in Qld also thanks buddy
To remove the tie rod without a tool, don’t beat the nut to death, hit the tapper on where the tie rod end goes through, once you shock the tapper the joint will fly out easy, one hit in the right spot, and to strengthen that rod Temporary, you can run rows of welds length ways, max heat, it will kinda harden the steel, making it slightly more Fragile but less likely to bend especially if you Quick cool it, unsafe but should get you home..
