I know I've spoken in favor of the Atlas Moth before, because of how the idea of hauling things out of a gravity well might be likened to holding up the sky, but now that subtypes are being requested specifically, I'll reaffirm that, just to keep it on the record.

Scarab excels at long-range sniping, so EMPs would serve it well to knock out heavily shielded areas and to disable thrusters. I could see the Fire Ant being a manoeuvrable nuke and deck cannon laden flanker to get around the armoured front of some of the highest level ships and take out the soft underbelly. Very glad to see the series back!!

Sun-lifter name: Atlas Moth. Or maybe just Atlas. Fits the 'lifting' motif, the bug motif, the moth is huge, and it's sorta fiery looking in coloration.

Tip to lower crew requirements on the Hercules. Hyperdrives hold 20 fuel each, so you never need to refuel quickly unless you're doing multiple panic jumps. So you don't have to have dedicated porters for each one. 2 for all of them will be more than enough.
In a similar vain, you could fill capacitors for each hyperdrive instead of giving them each small reactors. lowers ship costs and lowers reactor count so your less explode-y when hit by rails.

I mentioned it on the last Cosmoteer video, but it may have been missed. There is an Icarus moth. Admetovis icarus is the only species in the genus with a dusky hindwing with a straight outer margin distal to the cell between veins M1 and M3. Admetovis icarus is distinguished easily from A. similaris by the pure white hindwing of the latter species. It is only subtly different from A. oxymorus in habitus and can easily be confused with it, especially in the Pacific Northwest where both species occur. While the hindwing margin shape is the most reliable character for separating these species short of dissection, there are subtle differences in color. Admetovis icarus tends be more mottled on the forewing with a darker “flame-mark,” and its hindwing is consistently darker brownish gray than that of A. oxymorus. The forewing orbicular stigma of A. icarus is often more conspicuous than in either other species, with pale filling outlining a dark central ocellus.

Aavak, I seriously recommend making a Scout ship... you can make one with 8 crew with a sensor rather cheaply... They are useful for handing in quests and if fast enough scouting the entire map rather easily... Though scouting a station under attack before you intend to defend it can result in the station being lost... but it is worth having a cheap ship that can zip around at 150 m/s. I called my scout the Obal... for obvious reasons.

As the Scarab is a sniper build I feel that adding more long ranged weapon types may end up being redundant. However, the deck gun defense Idea is akin to having a sidearm for the rare occasion that your sniper ends up ambushed. In essence, having a plan B is likely more important than strengthening plan A.

One thing about the Hercules shields, I think they might be better used as rear protection for the side engine clusters. The idea being to save the thrusters from damage while fleeing from a fight.

Walter should thank you. This series made me purchase the game. The info and presentation was top notch. I have one complaint. You made it look too easy! Not only are you a magnificent presenter and teacher but you are very skilled. I find my self save scumming into the very hearts of space that you just glided through while chiet chatting. R.I.P. to your ferret. I can only assume they have passed. 7 years lifespan last I checked. "The candle that burns twice as bright, burns half as long" yada yada yada. What amazing and precocious animals and the fun they pack into those 7 years is something we can all aspire to. Best wishes to you and yours in 2024.

My current industrial ship has two massive mandibles set wide enough apart to wrap around most stations. Lining the inside of the mandibles are six mining lasers. The whole thing allows me to scoop up ships and cluster them all together to be disassembled. It also allows me to scoop up asteroids and move them about with relative ease.
It’s a big ship, currently storing over 160k steel, but more importantly it is the best design I’ve come up with for mining/dismantling ships efficiently. It has roughly 180 crew.

  • @maxsalmon4980
    @maxsalmon4980 ปีที่แล้ว +2

One thing I wound up doing with my hauler is building it with very wide 'boom arms' that stretch out in front of it. Each arm has a mining laser at the tip, and loads of storage all the way down to the main body of the craft. When salvaging, I maneuver so that the ship to be salvaged fits between the arms. This lets the lasers hit it from both sides, and puts the salvage extremely close to airlocks and storage all the way down its length.
It looks pretty wonky though, and is incredibly vulnerable if it's ever caught unescorted, hehe.

9:45 I remember one of my cats coming in from the garden, and couldn't put her paw on the ground. Her front leg had broken, and it was awful to see her in such condition.
A week later, Another one of my cats came into my house from the garden with heavy breathing and a blue swollen (tong? toung? tounge?).
Not a week after that, at the bottom of my garden, I found my neighbour putting barbed wire on "His" fence to "Keep the rodents away".
He was leaving poison (Meant for rats) inside cat food on plates in his garden. Leaving mouse traps with fish, and cheese, as bait.
    To keep the cats out.
Our pets are part of our families, It hurts when we find them in pain. injured, or otherwise.

Cinnabar Moth might work, it fits with the red/orange theme.
edit: also, my own game has an interesting solution to the storage problem. I've created the S.S. Picard, which is a storage/manufacturing station which has storage space for 4 max-size cargo bays of every resource (and something like 16 steel storage bays). Additionally, there is 1 of every manufacturing building. It is probably overkill but I love it anyway.
I also have the S.S. Blair and the S.S. Katahdin as mining/salvage ships which are somewhat a minimalist version of your Hercules, but designed to run a skeleton crew. They are *slow* so 8x speed is mandatory, but they can bring 32 cargo bays full of resources back to the Picard. Though having these ships makes me desperately want the ability to just give my crew an order to condense the storage on a ship with one button press, rather than having to manually look through every partial stack.
edit3: for reference, my storage station is set up to hold: 3920 hyperium; 3860 ammo; 160 of each missile/mine parts; 15440 steel; 3960 coils; 3880 hyper coils; 3920 tristeel; 340 diamonds; 645 processors; 1300 enriched uranium; 965 sulfur; 1300 iron; 980 copper; 660 tritanium ore; 360 carbon; 330 gold; 340 uranium. My goal was to abe able to accumulate all the resources to be able to build a ship on the fly... It also has 12 6-person bunks for spare crew collection.
edit2: Also, i'm glad to hear the good news about your beloved pet(s).

Might be worth giving the special beam lasers to the Fire Ant just so it has something if it runs out of ammo. The Scarab is pretty much "Railgun with wings" now and it is sickeningly amazing for it. It wouldn't even cost crew, as you'd simply be transferring them over with the beamy boys.
Also if your Moth is seeking a glorious name, Mothra is always the go to. She's our big assist girl, just like Mothra :D
I'm glad the bendy baby is okay, relatively speaking. All the love to the fuzzy ones.

Sky Puppy. It's the common name for the domesticated (only) version of the wild moth that is from silkworms. They are bigger, much "fluffier", and have anime like comically large eyes (as in "puppy dog eyes"). They are wholly dependent on those that breed them for protection. Since the silkworms produce silk, it makes a bit of sense for a ship, that while not actually producing anything, does bring items to be processed away from big-flammy-hot-thing. Also the spaces for the nested thrusters look kinda like massive comically large eyes. Downside it they are white (think cotton balls). I also don't know the scientific name for them, so don't know if it sounds "cooler" or not. However, sky puppy is just more fun to say.

imo on Hercules for point defence and for hyperdrive using energy storages is better than whole reactors, cuz in combat scenarios they will be used for a very short amount of time - fill hyperdrives with energy, bloop and gone.
For Sundiver (Moth is nice name btw) i think convex shape of shields better then concave for more even distribution of damage dealt by sun.
For Scarab emp-missiles works best with railguns. They have similar range and you can shut off enemy's engines to maintain maximum distance.

"Actias lunar" is the lunar moth ,i think its fitting

i think this kind of lore is giving the name the most weight.

Or if you want it in german (my preferred leanguage) it called "Nachtfalter" wich means "Folding night"

  • @PyroDesu
    @PyroDesu ปีที่แล้ว

You want a specific moth, the Atlas moth is an obvious choice. Not only is it a type of moth, the largest species of moth, but Atlas (for which it is named) held up the sky in Greek mythology, which would allude to the powerful shield wall that holds the star's fury away from the ship. Also, mature Atlas moths don't actually have working mouths and cannot eat, while your sunlifter is unable to actually process what it captures (it may have mining lasers, but lacks any substantial cargo space or processing facilities). And the Atlas moth's body is small compared to its wings, much like your sunlifter has very large "wings" but only a very small core for the command rooms, sensor, and so on.

If you're hurting for crew one way you could save a few on the Hercules is to have the same single bunk both load the hyperdrive with power and load it with hyperium as those jobs will basically never be performed at the same time. You will either be charging the hyperdrive OR loading it with fuel. Over 6 or more hyperdrives that's at least a dozen crew saved.

  • @Jedi_Vigilante
    @Jedi_Vigilante ปีที่แล้ว

I thought of a different type of support craft, though I haven't tested to see if it is viable.
    A jump beacon ship.
Basically, you build a simple frame with a hole in the middle that has at least one side that is just the framework structure...so it can be easily built and torn down. Once you arrive in a system and you find a hyperspace beacon, you deconstruct the side, fly the ship so that the beacon now fills the hole, and rebuild the side.
The only really important part of this ship is the engines. It needs to not only be fast, but be able to counter the constant attempts of the beacon to fly back to where it is supposed to be. At that point, you can use it in conjunction with your forge ship and sun-miner to speed things up rapidly because now you have a mobile beacon they can jump to.
Is it necessary? No, but it wouldn't take much crew and it could be fun just to play around with it.

The Deck guns sound nice for close range "issues" though they do not rotate quickly. I have thus far used EMP missile batteries on my rail ships for shutting down shields and drives to make my targets easier to snipe.

1:20 But "Polyommatus Icarus" is an insect, a butterfly tho, yet close enough to a moth xD ;)
Latin name for moth is "tinea" sounds nice :D
Or "Adelidae" the fairy longhorn moth
most of the latin names are fairly long tongue twisters

If you keep the ion beams, I think the prisms that aim them at the enemy are really, REALLY vulnerable because of how close to the edge of the ship they are.
As far as deck guns or missiles go, I think you have enough missiles but no cannons (if you don’t count railguns as cannons.) and I think that deck guns are the best choice.

Maybe call it the Atlas Moth or just the Atlas, to keep with the theme of insects and, like the Hercules, have some mythology in there too.

As far as the Scarab goes... it's a sniper, and snipers typically deploy with some sort of escort for local security; sometimes just their spotter, sometimes a good part of a Ranger platoon. Such escorts are usually optimized for short-to-medium range engagement. The Fire Ant does not fit that role -- it's a DDG/CG or maybe an Arsenal Ship; it too is meant for long-range action and needs local security. So, why not design a new, smaller, highly-maneuverable close-in brawler ship class that can deploy with either one? If you do, there's only 1 name for such an unparalleled close-in brawler - the Mantis.

So if you're replacing the ions, maybe try mines? The whole time, the enemies are chasing the scarab, right as you're backing up so they follow in your path, it would he perfect, and it will change up combat quite a bit. It would be cool to try at least.

Hey Aavak thanks for letting us into your life a little, i was a little worried when I saw it had been a while since the last upload. As for the future of the scarab, I think ions are a very good precision moderately long range weapon for boring away at specific targets, and I’d really consider the relative worth of that capability vs the less accurate but more defensible deck cannons. For engagements like the swarm missions I can see the value of a flexible easily rotating system like the deck cannon, but the lack of range and inaccuracy makes it less valuable in single engagements. Thanks for making great videos

I always wondered what would happen if you made the original scarab with all the multi-purpose weapons, into close combat ship, instead of going sniper? Will take more damage and the battles would be more close. The evolution would be interesting.
Scarab is my favorite rail I’ve seen. The main gun is so efficient that adding other gun types seems unnecessary.
EMP are nice back up, but I would not have them on auto fire. Missiles could focus engines to help the Scarab get more distance. But the problem is they all add weight and that means you loose speed.
