    This case is another proof that when disaster strucks, every related authority gives priority to money and the environment is always the last to concern about. So, environmentalism is a hype in the world of capital.

    This is kind of a more important vid than some of the ones that the salvors make; in that it shows the truly complicated and awful nature of marine accident recovery and ship salvage. All such operations out of calm, stable waters are never the calm, assured processes the salvors record them to be in hindsight; but blizzards of complex maneuvering on the parts of all parties involved. This helps to remind us of that.

      No, obviously anyone can make a mistake and things will go wrong at some point. After all, it already is an accident. Things have already gone wrong, thats why they call their help. And considering circumstances, it might not be succesfull. There could be a rogue wave, but that sort of incident you cannot work with.
      Seems to me this is not Smit ffing up, but a whole lot of things; starting with who leads the operation. And since it is not mentioned, im pretty sure the Brits were trying to get the best outcome, for the lowest possible amount of money. Which means the salvage company will not quickly divide the cake by calling in outside help, bc that might mean they actually lose money. Isnt it odd that you dont hear a word about this?

      @@StofStuiver I agree by the looks of this documentary there is a whole lot of parties at play in this situation but at the end of the day as the world renowned experts smit tak should have done better in my opinion and if that means telling the various government people involved whats up then so be it. But things will always be difficult when you don't have 1 person clearly in charge.

    the yard the ship developed a crack in one side of its engine room
    following a collision with a sunken ship, Hang Ro Bong, when she was
    attempting to anchor at the B (Bravo) anchorage of the port. Rice-laden Hang Ro Bong had capsized in the Bay in a collision with another ship on April 6, 2011. Following
    allegations of another oil spillage from the former Sea Empress vessel,
    a team led by the CPA Deputy Conservator Captain Najmul Alam on CPA
    salvage vessel Kandari-10, visited the spot. 2012, she was renamed for a fifth time: MV Wind 3 and on June 3 that
    year the 274-metre long vessel was brought to Chittagong in Bangladesh
    for dismantling at the Shitakunda ship breaking yard.

      Smit had nothing to do with the grounding or the oil spill.
      What Rob is saying is that early on- Smit and the Chinese tug that was there could have avoided the spill had the government not given them a red light.

    Even today after those mega marine accidents the Tory government still cuts resources like MRCC stations, strategic salvage tugs & Pollution skimmer vessels. Most of Western European refinery ports offer helicopter services for pilot operations to mitigate problems boarding in heavy weather but not the UK.Just kick that can down the road like always.

    Having a shipping lane thru jagged rocks is the first mistake. Especially for oil tankers. Only a matter of time before human error or mother nature pushes a ship on to them.

    Remember trying to walk through tenby town centre, slippery as hell because all the oil from the beach was dragged through the streets and the smell of oil was suffocating. All of Pembrokeshire coast was ruined.

    Isn't it just absolutely AMAZING how bungling bureaucrats can screw up even the simplest of events? SOMEBODY should have been given the axe and even jail time for this disaster. Several opportunities to save her and prevent any more environmental damage were literally thrown away by incompetency! Talk about the proverbial circle jerk! How could a country with such a long maritime history have screwed this accident up so badly?

      Smit could've handled it no problem, if they'd been given all access without government interfering and involving the Chinese tug... but frankly, the ball had been dropped by the pilots before Smit got involved, and it just stacked problem onto problem from then on... Smit Salvage is world-renowned for their success if and when they're given a free hand to actually do their work... the moment other agencies start interfering it all goes to heck...

    What is literally just so disgracefully Obvious is that anyone in that industry would allow a single hull tanker to be utilized anywhere near these violent sea coast's is criminally insane these accident's continue today and that fact that they do tell's me they obviously do NOT CARE ..If your a Tanker Captain your company's mandate's should be your weather is below the minimum needed for you to safely pull into port If you bypass that Mandate and anything happen's the Captain should be criminally charged period the fact the British people continue to allow this to take place is just Horrible ..

      This accident has been 22 years ago since you commented. Since then, the world and the British people have learnt from their mistakes. No single hull tankers exist anymore today. So much more safety and regulations are in place all over the world. All fuel and oil tanks need to be double hulled too nowadays.
      You are judging and criminalizing the actions of people 22 years later...just..please keep in mind that these people do not have your ability of hindsight and learning from their mistakes...

      Governments make their own rules. Governments often procrastinate or react to events after the fact.
      Ive noticed all around the worlds "democracys" politicians do or dont, buy or dont buy, with the stated position of it being what the public desires & in the publics interests yet they never actually ask the people what their true interests are & when you dig a little deeper we find contracts or actions or inactions actually benefit a specific groups interests or several groups interests rather than the public in general. People aren't stupid & understand the need for industry or resources, we also want the risks mitigated intelligently & effectively. This means we dont want useless, flashy & unnecessary equipment bought & nor do we want too little equipment onsite for realistic risks. For what people are paid & the benefits they receive its much more simple than how I've had to write & describe the process. It also requires honesty & accountability though & without it we'll always be paying more than we need both financially & enviromentally. Accountability & honesty.

I don't know how this can be done, so far as I know it isn't in any country in the world apart from possibly New Zealand. What I do know is that at November 2020 the world is heading fairly rapidly for the waterfall. What really distresses me is that we will take so many other species with us if we go over

      Thats leaderships fault, which is, in this situation i believe the Brit gov.
      They called Smit, probably tied their hands on cost/payment AND set up a situation where Smit had to deal with a situation with 3 leaders for the actual salvage.
      and then they have the nerve to complain afterwards.
      If you hire experts, let the experts do the job.

    Brits always wanna inquire, but the inquiry done by the group being investigated, leads to favoritism, like always. Just like they farm out all responsibility to the next guy, who then passes it on to the next because they know the inquiry will lead to an insider hand job, full release on the people, a large bill that pays them anyways, no interruption of "tea bag time", and 0 responsibility taken. Way to "flip the world the greasy bird" Brits. Cheerios.

    Two questions: if you need a translator for a marine operation, why wouldn't you go to the Royal Navy instead of the local Chinese restaurant? ... and why wouldn't the coast guard people be running a continuous recording of the radio channel(s) being used as soon as a disaster was declared? There's no excuse for this to be a he said/she said issue.

    every one blaiming the salvors, the blame lies to the pilot, who grounded here!, but as always politics and press know better....sad. its always easy tho give a comment after things have hapened.

      Eric Komperda the pilot is still working in the harbour , the head of the port died two year after the incident in a car crash

    And bringing in the Chinese restaurant cook just to ask "what are you doing?" was obviously facetious, bad attempt at a bigoted, underhanded, cheap wise crack, and it was in even poorer taste after those Chinese people tried to help them clean up their own f up. The only joke was the UK.

    It's always easy to look at everything that could have been done after a incident because everyone is cool headed after a incident. Obviously, mistakes did occur in this case but are these mistakes so uncommon that they are particular to this incident being mishandled, I am not really that sure. The only, and I want to be clear on this point, the only good thing that can come out of this old disaster is what we learn from it and the measures that are put in place so that it does not repeat itself in total or in a partial manner.

    So she was piloted and grounded. While the pilot is on board he is the captain. What a stuff up by those vested as controllers. All it seems working in positions well above their actual capacity to work efficiently. No cure for stupid. Can the British marine service do anything right. Bunch of pompous fools.

    Bummer! I carried on watching despite the poor quality, grainy video only to have it abruptly cut off at the end. Hopefully, whatever the outcome of this particular incident, measures were ultimately taken to ensure nothing like this happens again.

      The only real long term solution is the banning of single hull tankers which has happened
