The Empire in Elder Scrolls games for example are usually shown as the good guys, the only exception being Skyrim if you choose to fight against them, but even than it’s more of a clash of ideologies. I’d even argue that it’s the same case with the Adrestian Empire in Three Houses. Edelgard’s methods may not be great but her intentions are good and many of the Imperial boss characters are revealed to be pretty decent people in BE path. So, while it’s understandable why people see them as the bad guys in other routes given their perspective of things, it isn’t completely true.
Empires in theory stand for order and unity through force. A concept so far removed from most modern day mindsets that it is easy to make an Empire look like a bad thing. Back in the era of clashing swords, when marauding bandits and army deserters were a serious concern to one traveling from settlement to settlement the stability an Empire brings is precious, a beloved ideal. The Empire is the single most efficient form of human designed governmental systems for utilizing military force to solve problems. A threat to the Empire rears its head? No bickering with politicians or nobles the Emperor says march and the Imperial army marches.

Well at least Azure Moon doesn’t make Edelgard an irredeemably one-sided villain like Fates’ Garon (* cough cough * CF, SB and GW’s depictions of Rhea and Dimitri). Do you know how amazing it is for Dimitri who went from someone who would horribly kill her the moment he saw her, to someone who was willing to have a peaceful discussion and was willing to forgive her and give her a chance to start anew? Edelgard was tortured via experiments AND traumatized/scarred for life by the experience. So... Claude - Mentally and sometimes Physically Dimitri - Mostly Mentally later a bit Physically Edelgard - Mostly Mentally and Mostly Physically Easily Edelgard.
Would Rhea count as a lord too? She is basically one of the last 5 remaining member of her race after Nemisis came in and used the power from Sothis's bones to slaughter the rest of the Nabateans, plus she has to sit and watch the descendants of the Elites use her familys bones like nothing, having to twist history so the people who slaughtered your family look like heroes so another Red Canyon dosnt happen again with the remaining 5 Nabateans (6 if you count Byleth tbh)
Sometimes there's no other way.no other option no way to go back so all you can is march forward forward and forward untill your legs give out and while they crackle and snap twist bend squish and squash you crawl foward never wavering and when you look behind the sickle of death has kept up pace slowly creeping but you may never allow them to come close enough so we march on to the final part the final countdown the...reason all of it was for the reason you became a leader a genuine no doubt in their mind leader. Sorry that was a bit "out" of character for me but moving on wouldn't you like to sit on the grass in a nice park or place the wind on your face being glad to just sit back and relax or perhaps just doing what you want to do right now without having to worry?
Firecraft 703 not sure claude would have had much of a choice. The alliance is so divided and exists in a fragile balance there could be enough unrest that he would have no choice but to display his strength by waging war against the empire.

Edelgard is the true hero of 3 Houses. Dimitri is a tragic hero and a "puppet" of the Church and of his past. And Claude is....Claude. Can't blame the guy for being that cool.
Lol no, in my opinion Edelgard is a villain with good intentions but bad methods, Byleth for his goodness and Claude for his objectivity and maturity are the true heroes of Fire Emblem Three Houses. Dimitri is a tragic hero, of course, and Edelgard and Rhea are two sides of the same coin, and personally if i have to choose between Edelgard or Rhea, I choose Rhea, for their sacrifices and for her tragic past because of Nemesis and the twsitd, that are responsible for all the tragedies of this story.

She planned to sacrifice Byleth so her mother would return and condemned on a "assumed assassination charge" when they were caught doing stealing, breaking and entering plus disrupting a holy ceremony and the assassination letter was a fake ploy. Not even torture or life imprisonment. Just death. Edelgard thought of Byleth as an individual but Rhea? She thought of him as a convenient tool. She is indirectly responsible for the crest system (crests being a gift from the goddess being her motto) and for letting TWSITD be which caused more problems in the long run. And its not like she didnt knew them. She did thanks to Sothis. So either TWS were pretty good a hiding or Rhea didnt bother hunting them down being too busy with her trauma and new Church to care. And do you really think diplomacy would've worked in the enviroment that is Fodlan? Heck no. The status quo and slithery boys were the issue. A peaceful reform was tried? Boom! Tragedy of Duscur or Insurrection of the Seven as retaliation! And also compare the tally of the deaths in El's war compared to Rhea's overall rule during "peace"....yyyyyeah, Rhea has more skeletons in her closet....under the bed and under the faucet. Add the fact that Edelgard's CPTSD made it impossible for her to compromise...and for good reason (Claude was a sketchy outsider who was once seen talking with Tomas and Dimitri's values were too contradictory to hers) and you know she made the best out of a worst situation. Oh and another difference between Rhea and Edelgard. She ordered Byleth to kill her but Edelgard offered Byleth to make a choice out of their own volition. And also the way you fight both. Edelgard expresses regret while Rhea expresses hatred. Claude and Edelgard arent so different (both are Cancer cusps and want whats best for Fodlan) but the fact is in terms of goals, Edelgard solved ALL of Fodlans problems while Claude solved 80% of them. Oh and Edelgard haters can go suck it.

But for me is a question about philosophical principles, the end doesn't justify the means, in the beggining of the game she wants to kill dimitri and claude, and the most ironic is that Edelgard almost died if it wasn't for byleth, and I know jeralt's death was caused for twistd, but the experiments with students for transform them into monsters is very creepy, because the empire uses this monsters, but this is only a theory, another problem is the declaration of war to the alliance, the kingdom is ally for the church, ok, but the alliance has nothing to do with the conflict between empire and church, and starting a war always seems like a bad way to achieve a greater good. I don't defend Rhea because she did many things wrong, but she redeems herself y golden deer and silver snow (her unstable crest wasn't her fault), and i don't know that she allow to the twistd make his plans, they hide very well, another thing is that Edeldgard defends Nemesis that Seiros, when Nemesis is directly evil for kill Sothis in cold blood.
