- There have been lots of enquiries about Minor Works Certificates for electrical work that is carried out in people’s homes. Not just from electricians. Some enquiries have come from concerned home-owners who say they have received no paperwork at all from the tradesman. Is this correct, they ask.
So, in this short video we will look at when we should issue a certificate, what for, and why - as it relates to the Wiring Regulations.
This LearnElectrics video will concentrate just on the Minor Works Certificate, or to give it it’s full title, the Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate which is often shortened to MEIWC or MWC.
People ask for information on what needs notifying, must they issue a certificate for everything that they do and when should they use a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate.

On-site Guide suggests an MEWIC for 'replacing circuit-breakers with RCBOs where there is a difference of overcurrent type, e.g. replacing Type C for Type B.
' . Personally I think that altering the tripping characteristics of a circuit warrants an EIC.

Good video again. Can I suggest a video in relation to certification about the notices that have to be attached to the consumer unit or adjacent to it (or not now) I’m thinking schedules and rcd checks, next inspection etc and what has to be at the board and what can be handed over with say the certificate.

Excellent video as always. One grey area seems to be like-for-like replacement of RCCB/RCBO. The (paraphrased) efinition in regulations is that a ‘circuit’ is attached to a protective device, so in other words the protective device is not part of the circuit a new RCBO etc might not constitute a new circuit. I think general assumption (and best practice) is new RCBO = EIC, but I don’t think there is a regulation that makes that mandatory?
@Teoma I’m not adding any personal logic here.. just read the definition of a circuit like a lawyer would (page 31, brown book)…. The protective device sits outside the circuit, not part of it (albeit attached)…
As Teoma points out, below, removing the protective device and installing a new or different protective device will trigger a notification to Building Control. They need to know that then person doing the changing is competent at doing the job and that the necessary calculations and other requirements have been considered.
