This movie was a very good adaptation of King’s original story. Good movie. I think it’s more then a simple creature feature. Loved the ending, true horror. Not a happy ending.

The ending of the movie was a bold move by Frank Darabont. Stephen King (SK), I believe, decided to end the story with an "uncertain future/your own interpretation" type of ending to - depending on the reader - either give a hazy prediction of better things to come or the group would eventually be killed, because he was probably leaning on a sad ending where they all died somehow. Maybe he decided not to do a sad ending, however he did not want a happy ending. He sort of gave the reader the responsibility to choose the ending they want. If they want a happy ending or sad ending, it is there for the reader to choose, relieving himself of forcing the reader to accept a sad ending.
Frank Darabont decided that it will indeed have an ending, and it will be as bleak as he and I believed SK would have actually ended the story. Darabont forces the viewer to accept a sad ending, not specific events, but rather the idea that if SK would have chosen an ending it would have been a sad one.

Stephen King books are known to not always have the best endings and King himself says he always has issues with endings of his books. I think that’s why so many of them are interconnected.

I thought the movie was B-movie entertaining when I first saw it and then I got to the end and was blown away by it. It was so unlike the typical "tie everything together and leave on a happy note" type of ending. It made the movie great for me.

William Friedkin once said to me, “Ed, the guy who made these new ‘Halloween’ is about to make one to my movie, “The Exorcist.” That’s right, my signature film is about to be extended by the man who made “Pineapple Express.” I don’t want to be around when that happens. But if there’s a spirit world, and I come back, I plan to possess David Gordon Green and make his life a living hell.”

I felt exactly how you felt when I first saw this back in the day and I revisited it when I read that Darabont always wanted this to be in black & white and that he was going for an old 50’s movie vibe. That reshaped how I looked at the film. Is it unbelievable that they would turn as fast as they did into a cult? Sure but it’s not exactly a movie predicated on believability to begin with and I think it’s using both of those unrealistic elements to highlight that when shit hits the fan people will eat each other. I feel like that’s why he’s leaning into the cheesiness of the monsters too, the heightened aspects of the metaphor are meant to complement each other and to me there’s a poignant quality to how the people are the real monsters in the story. I do think it could’ve worked more as a miniseries like IT with two longer parts but as is I think it’s well done. My biggest gripe is that the CG is just not good at all, the black and white helps this a bit but not enough to not make it a little distracting. I also just think the ending really makes this movie memorable as hell. I’d give it a solid 7.5/10 but it’s got the advantage of being easy to watch for me as well. If this is on TV I’ll definitely always put it on even if it’s just to fall back on if nothing else is on. I feel like that’s a whole lane of movies, where they’re not exactly amazing but they have a strong casual rewatchability about them.

  • @charleyvarrick6371

I agree the black & white helps this movie and I can see why Darabont originally intended that, for the Twilight Zone type vibe.

I absolutely love lionsgate steelbooks. American psycho being one of my favorites in the collection. But if the design isn't doing it for me, I don't feel the need to collect em all. I ordered the slip version from best buy, still waiting for it to be delivered. I will say they have more hits than misses imo, but there's definitely been misses I had to skip. Ran is another beautiful example that I had to get during it's initial release. Reservoir is up there for me as well. I know that one's controversial because I was seeing a lot of people who hated it

This isn't the top tier(Exorcist/Thing/Alien/TCM/Rosemarie's Baby) But this is probably top 5 horror films since this movies release. I love horror but don't care for way over 90% of it. This is a horror film for people who need a horror fix but don't want to watch bull.

Loved your review you are correct
But my advice for 4k upscale source reviews you have to compare hdr10 and dolby vision because sadly 4k upscales dont improve much from hdr10 if it has option for dolby vision
4k upscale sourced releases that has dolby vision and hdr10
Dont look good with hdr10 usually
But 4k upscale sourced relases that just have hdr10 no dolby vision looks good and see improvement

Hey Ken - I never do this but I'd love to see you do a video on the following subject: when a movie goes to 4k that uses the same transfer that was done for the bluray, I'm curious how often there's a real difference vs. how often they look exactly the same. This idea was inspired by the Dead Zone 4k that's coming out in December - it feels like yesterday we got the bluray!

A first time watch for me and I thought the movie looked great in 4K. The color palette looks great and I’ll check out the B&W version when I’m done watching all my horror films this month. That Steelbook is hideous though lol. The movie itself is interesting but not Darabont’s best compared to his masterpieces of Shawshank and Green Mile. The ending was very shocking though and idk if that was King’s original ending from the story but I think one of the first to have a twist ending.

The thing that’s important to mention when talking about this movie is the acting in it is some of the best you’re ever going to see from a horror film.
    🚨Spoiler Alert incoming ‼️
The ending… is really contrived to me. To think everyone would be thinking that yeah we all should just snuff it, is really unbelievable. Well, except for the kid who just woke up from a nap who doesn’t even have a say of whether he wants to give up. And I don’t believe the dad would have made that decision, no matter how stark the situation is. Ultimately it is a more satisfying/dramatic ending than the way King ended it in the book (they drive off into the mist…) IDK i wish they had done multiple endings like they did for I Am Legend
