I am 60 now and both James Taylor and Joni Mitchell have been my icons forever. Both incredibly gifted in each their own personal ways and been so blessed to be on this planet to have experienced their music. However, hearing this combo makes me feel so sad. What do I know, but when I hear Joni's input in this its so raw, and I hear her cry out for his love, but it is not reciprocated. Wherever they were "together" at this point on their journey, we will never know as its only a vocal, no video, no body language. Its just so haunting and such a sad, but beautiful at the same time.

I was lost in thought, half listening to the radio, mostly thinking about the woman I was going to marry the following week, and how I had found out recently that she likely had cancer and was not doing well. (We had been in a long distance relationship for 4 years ever since she moved to Utah). I had just pulled over to the side of the road just when this song came on. I cried so hard as the thunder and rain rattled the company car I was driving. Once my emotional reservoir has been emptied, I started driving again. The storm had basically finished by then, and the sky split open into one of the most gorgeous rainbows I've seen before or since, and it lasted all the way back to work. I live in that moment once more now and again. That's why I love this song so much.

Anna, what a beautiful way to put it. When I was little, my mom used to borrow Joni and Dylan albums from the teenager across the street. Of course I didn't get it until I was in junior high. My brothers hated Joni's voice but i agree with you. She sounds like a beautiful bird.

Can you imagine if they HAD formed a duo? This is really lovely. I got this sung to me as a kid, and I used to sing it to my partner when they couldn't sleep because of chronic pain (...now I'm the one with insomnia...). This is my favorite version of one of my all-time favorite songs. I have seen/heard recordings of James singing this song with many people, but as far as I know, this is the only version with that little two-part harmony at the very end ("But I can sing this song, and you can sing this song when I'm/you're gone.). I'm thinking that was a Joni touch, and it is magical. Actually, this whole version is magical.
