    I have bought one of those scanners -same shell but scans 1080 (Winait) and I am happy with results. Certainly excellent value for money . Suitable video files for DVD and BD use.

      So you appear to be happy with 8mm and Super 8 conversions. Do any of them have sound. Does your device handle that. Also I heard there are 16mm tapes. Are you aware of any similar products to convert those. Thanks.

      I am happy. There are technically more advanced scanners, but I do not have the funds. The quality is acceptable for my budget and needs.
      The scanner does not record sound.
      I have tried so far four super sound 8 movies (trailers). I have recorded the soundtrack along with the film with a camcorder (Line out to Mic in). With Pinnacle Studio I have aligned the sound with the scanned movie.
      Scanned movie needs to be slowed down by 56% (scanner output at 30fps), then some zoom and cropping to adjust to 16:9. The sound from the super 8 magnet strip sounds wrong to my ears, pitch too low, so I used "Audials" to change the pitch.
      The synchronisation is however an art I have not yet mastered completely:

      What kind of technique, or software, do you use to slow down by 56%.

    This machine does use a claw - it doesn't have any rollers, so it relies on pulling the film through frame by frame by the sprocket holes.
    Causes no end of bother with worn/torn sprocket holes. Doesn't deal well with splices either.

    Larry, I remember you from Basildon/Pitsea - Chris Southend here!How does this thing compare with the Flash Scan? I still have some excellent super 8 Flashscan stuff you did for me.

      I remember taking a film to him in Pitsea about 15 years ago ! Was gutted when he moved to New Zealand as I had many more to convert.

    What's the resolution of the scan? What's thi dpi? What's the dynamic range? What's the color accuracy of the light source? Can you see film grain? Is it bundled with software? What format digital file does it output? Etc. etc. etc. ...

  • @Enigma758
    @Enigma758 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So why wouldn't this machine produce results as good as a professional transfer? 960 x 720 isn't a bad resolution. I notice the color balance may not be the best (I saw a yellow sky @ 2:38), but I'm still curious as why this wouldn't be better than a professional DVD transfer at SD resolution?

      I disagree. Not everyone has their old Super8 films that are totally deteriorated like it sounds like yours are.

      What scanner do you have? Obviously not the same one because my projected films are incredibly clear and my scanned films are grainy, at best.

      I say this is worse than VHS quality. Way too much compression artifacts and the colors are all messed up.

  • @ilvsurfin

    is this sprocketless? The old 8mm has jumped while viewing in my projector and considering one of these, if it by passes the rough spots. What do you think. Yes I have so many 8mm films and would like to treat them gently and yet have a copy made. thanks for your input.

    Hi there! I'm looking to get some 8mm film transferred to a digital file, but a lot of it is covered in paint. I've been trying to send it to online companies but I've often had it sent back as they refuse to scan it. Is this something you can do? Or do you know where I could buy/rent a similar machine so I can do it myself?

    Why is there no instruction on how to connect to a computer? The cable connection to my laptop is not recognized by the laptop under any setting whatsoever, and does not show up on my device list. The sim card files are not recognized by the computer when the sim card is inserted. How does one transfer the digital images to dvd or computer files???

    • @mattallin2560

      Page 9 in the included MovieMaker manual has instructions on connecting the USB cable to a computer to upload the mp4 files.
      I have also removed the SD card to transfer files, and either method works well.
      The files are located under a directory FilmScanner/MOVIES.

      In the UK it is sold under the Reflecta label. There is also a later model called the Pro which takes 400foot spools and outputs in 1080. This is only available in the US but there is one company who will export them to you at a reasonable postal rate. The guy in the video is wrong when he says you cant frame adjust the image. You can. Though it is easier on the Pro model.

    Silent Super 8 ran at 18 fps and sound at 24 fps. At 30 fps you will have to slow down the speed to 60% in your editing software. I don't think this is explained or understood by this so called 'Kiwi' professional !

    • @DoubleMonoLR
      @DoubleMonoLR 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think he's talking about how the device creates the video, rather than the original frame rate. It sounds like it converts the 18/24fps to 30fps/30p NTSC or 30p PAL(which is normally 50i/kind of 25p) They probably used 30p for both as it's easier to convert to.Either way, most editing or dvd creation etc software would presumably identify the input and output fps settings, and not require manual speed adjustment.
      It doesn't sound ideal except where quality doesn't matter much, if it's limited to PAL/NTSC resolutions, and 30p.

    that jpg artifact image is horrendous. You cant adjust the compression on this convertor! a complete waste of a product because of this one crippling factor. Oh and you cant even save the frames as jpgs. What the hell??? Shame.
