Hi Stella , I want to share something that you inspired . I showed your journey with Tally to a friend who recently lost her dog to an illness after 12 years and was so deeply depressed. Seeing you and Tally warmed her heart so much that she went to a shelter near her home and rescued a dog . She named her new doggie companion Stella after you.
Thanks for sharing your time with
Tally. There’s one less dog in a shelter because of you and Tally.

Wise choice Nyx, freezing rain is awful. I was on a day hike in The Whites, and this stuff started right after we summited. Rain freezing horizontal on trees. We had no choice but to hole up in the shelter til morning. Glad you're warm, dry, and safe. ✌️

Stella, I have been following your Appalachian journey because I thought I might want to do it one day, too. I just got caught up tonight and oh, my goodness, I bawled like a baby with you about saying goodby to Tally. I am so inspired by your level headedness. I'm sure I would have kept him with me on the trail if I were in your shoes and then look at how the weather turned and it would have not been good for him. So glad you took advantage of the open doors to shelter him. And, as you say, maybe it will turn out that you two will be together after all if it is meant to be. Keep on inspiring us. I am in awe.

In retrospect, your decision to place Tally in the shelter was wise, as you couldn’t have kept both of you dry, let alone warm, jeopardizing the safety of you both. As we’ve always said to our children (now about your age), “Make good decisions.” Your decision to bail today was the right choice.

Absolutely the best move to get off the trail there. Mt. Rogers area just seems to have it's own ecosystem at times. It really would have been bad further up. That area is one of my favorite places on Earth and it is best to see it on a nice day. I hope you get that opportunity.

Love the Grayson Highlands...but like in July!!! Even then the weather can do strange things, violent storms etc. Jay was in sideways winds last year, cold but not that cold, Otoh, one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen was the Hoar Frost covering everything on the other side of the road there at Elk Gardens. That looked pretty crazy probably with the moisture getting pushed up over the mountain there and creating freezing rain. Good idea to bail, smart cookie.

Stay safe. Just past Grayson in the same kind of weather is where I slipped and fell badly and ended up with two cracked ribs. And that was it. The end of my thru hike attempt. I am rooting for you! Don't push too hard and take too many risks. Also you have been able to stay healthy up to now. The shelters will start being more crowded and you should really avoid them when they are. Illness and injury are the main reasons folks have to get off the trail.

Hear hear....i had a farm right off the App Parkway near Boone, NC for 20 yrs. until 3 yrs ago...The weather can be BRUTAL and will change quickly. I've seen it down to -20f/wind chill -45f....and the Wind coming from the West? OmG....i've survived Hurricanes, but being on a Mtn Top with 65-80 sustained or gust and the trees bending like blades of grass and the sound of Pines and Tall Oaks cracking nearby, Wooah....the wind chill can lead to Hypothermia quickly. And then there is the Ice? *Im the Eternal Optimist, but as Yoda would say...."Common sense is strong in this one" ie; Stella.

Good decision and good self awareness. I think one of the toughest aspects of backpacking is to know when to take a breather. I love to solo backpack, but one of the downsides is that you don't have any feedback from someone as to your condition. I've been on day hikes with people that weren't aware they were on the verge of heatstroke, until I mandated they drink water and we turn around. Cold is no joke. I'm following several thru hike channels this year-The AT, The CDT and The PCT. The PCT has been slammed by storm after storm and the Sierra's are buried under hundreds of inches of snow in some areas. I live in Northern Nevada and Tahoe received a few inches of snow yesterday. Last year, I had to turn back on just a short 3 day trip due to health issues (temporary) and it's really hard, but I knew it was the right decision. Take the days off and the trail will still be there. Be safe.

I've hiked Grayson & Stayed around the Thomas Knob shelter. (live close to the VA Triple Crown section). It is a good call to bail in those conditions without the proper gear, and even then it's not miserable, it's dangerous for sure. By now you've probably passed Grayson, hopefully you went up Mt. Rogers and was the tallest person in VA for a moment, no views up there, but the highest point in VA. Do take time to enjoy Dragon's Tooth, McAfee Knob (I can't stress enough to do a sunrise at McAfee as long as the weather is clear, it's amazing), and Tinker Cliffs.

  • @richardross7219

When the ice builds up on branches, the branches and trees eventually break. I prefer a poncho in that kind of weather. To keep warm, I like the old fashioned Zippo Pocket warmer. It burns lighter fluid, is warmer than the chemical handwarmers, And pays off in the long run. It adds a lot to a sleeping bag at night. Walmart carries them. It was very dangerous out there. You made the right decision. I fell 16 years ago after an ice storm. My back still gives me trouble. A pocket warmer and poncho can create a warm space for you. Good Luck, Rick

I was hiking in VA that same day (daylight savings) but further north, on the Massanutten Mountain, west of the Shenandoah National Park in Page County. It was snowing here and below freezing. I’ve camped and hiked a lot in such weather, but always close to home. I’m planning to thru hike the AT next year, and I was wondering how to deal with conditions like that on the AT. Thanks for posting your videos, because not only are the interesting but they give a lot of real time info, thought processes, strategies, and decisions that will help future they hikers enjoy the trail safely. 💯

      @ivypropertygroup ปีที่แล้ว

@S. M. Just spitballing here...Wouldn't you run into the same issues with mud in Vermont and bugs starting that far North in early April. Then you are going to hit the peak summer temps late June-September going South. Maybe you are a heat guy or camel, but during my section hikes in the south I'm spending a couple of hours a day dealing with water and consuming around 8+ liters a day.
I've been watching a lot of these videos and I'm becoming less of a fan of these early starts. Many of these people are hostel hiking due to the conditions (we've had a mild winter in the south IMO). Nothing wrong with that, but not the hike I would want. Heck, I'm beginning to think you could hike the southern half and not sleep outdoors with using shuttles and slack packing. That has to start getting expensive.
Anyway, would love to hear your advantages for starting early April headed north from Hagers Ferry.

Millennials 1, Gen Z 0. Nice job Stella!
Love her attitude. Was watching a Gen Z-er (monetizing her videos, with her own sponsored product-placement promo lasting 2 min) who was literally crying b/c of some guy snoring in a hostel, complaining left and right. Yeah, the AT is really tough like that (rolling my eyes and shaking my head … ). Hiking gear sponsors will think twice about renewing that contract. But here’s Stella, toughing it out, challenging herself, a walking icicle, showing us the terrain and conditions, frozen mittens, and walking us through her thought process to bail (smart and safe), only AFTER challenging herself and without complaining or crying. Only thing Stella cried about was saving an abandoned dog she prudently gave up to a no-kill shelter. Respect.
Everybody should HYOY…but the people monetizing their videos, selling stuff, putting up affiliate links to gear in her description (which is fine, if she’d actually USE her gear and challenge herself) aren’t just hikers, but are also for-profit TH-camrs trying to induce me to spend my money on their links and my viewing time on their commercials, and TH-camrs sure better treat it like a job (b/c it is if they’re getting money off it) and not be crybabies about snoring or bad weather. It’s a competition between TH-camrs, whether they admit it or not. Stella would be a great brand ambassador worth sponsoring. She’s EMBRACING THE SUCK, instead of crying about it. Laughing off her frozen mittens, and no doubt getting colder by using her fingers to video record for us (taking one for the team). But yeah, HYOY if you’re NOT monetizing your videos and its just for friends and family, and viewers shouldn’t make a fuss about how anybody else hikes. But when other TH-camrs (not Stella) put themselves out there in the public as if they are tough, expert hikers (as if we should trust their gear advice in their affiliate links), who put in ‘big miles’ (and for whom ‘big miles’ isn’t even over 20, let alone 30), I just roll my eyes and groan. so everybody should HYOY, but on TH-cam, it’s CYOC…comment your own comment. Esp when TH-camrs actively solicit those comments for clicks and interactions that further monetize their videos. So anybody who disagrees with this, CYOC.
Stella is ‘winning’ the AT TH-camr competition for my views and likes with her attitude. Gen Z grew up getting a trophy, just for showing up. Stella is earning her trophy on the trail. 🏆

Didn't they change and now monetized videos now require permits in nat. parks...🙂

You definitely made the right choice. Mt Roger's and the Grayson Highlands can be dangerous in the wrong weather.
