- The funeral of a renowned transgender activist in a New York cathedral elicited a denunciation of the event by a senior church official, who called the Mass a scandal within one of the preeminent houses of worship in U.S. Catholicism. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York condemned the funeral of Cecilia Gentili in Manhattan's St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Thursday.

The friends and relatives of the deceased Catholic member, who may or may not be Catholic themselves, attended that funeral -- not a dance club event -- which was one and only one event. Usually the person is a member of a particular church and offering envelopes are provided to them, its a way of keeping record of weekly attendance, and the priests recognize the parishioners, if not know them

Churches do not do background checks on people requesting a funeral. They take the word of the family members. These family members lied, plain and simple.
In most parishes it is not a problem, as they are small enough for people to know who is who. St. Patrick's is a huge Parish, however, with many outside it requesting services as well.
They will need to change procedures now that the alphabet demons have opted to take advantage and exploit Christian charity.

Conducting the funeral in the cathedral was not bad , every deceased person require a good send of nomatter their life . What was wrong is the activities during the funeral which mocked the church . They should have restricted themselves to funeral service without displaying or praising the life of the deceasesd which did not follow churches teachings.

Conducting it I. The cathedral is where the Wrong begins.. Are there no town halls, other big enough places to hold that many ppl and have a 'service' there.. This is the House of God, why should ppl who do not follow the principles of the owner of the house feel they have a right to use jus his House yet disrespect, disregard the Man of the house and his Place.. The place is consecrated - set apart- for worship to a specific God, that is sacred and should not be treated so lowly.. God's angels are there too.. So NO, ITS A VERY BIG DEAL

I renounced mine when I learned that Catholic nuns in Ireland buried 800 infants who had died from neglect in their care in a septic tank and never informed anyone, warehoused and enslaved youg women and buried them too in unmarked graves and sold their babies to wealthy foreigners. Why are the impoverished still dying on hard slabs in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) without medication. Where did the millions go that Mother Teresa raised? Research the lifestyles of Cardinals. How can they show their faces amongst the poor and pretend to be men of God? It's all a sham and, dare I say, the greatest business model ever devised. The wealth is unimaginable. And let's not forget the global scandal of sexual abuse of children and the church's protection of the perpetrators. It's a vile organization and, as the comments here prove, it festers hatred. If this person was an atheist,why did they have this service. The Catholic funeral is so stringent,I can’t imagine why this priest let this take place. This was a mockery for the sake of an online debacle !

Giving Permission to hold service for an atheist is the First step where Archbishop is Complicit and therefore is guilty
The only fault is that they should have been honest with the Church. If the Church disagreed, they should have held it at another Church or rented a place/hall, etc
None of these people have money to pay for rent. Just ask their parents.
Why would they even want a church funeral in the first place when practically most of them are atheist, demean organized religion and openly mock it in their daily lives...

Damn i was wondering why people in the west are fleeing from churches in droves, this comment section answered that question with the quickness.
Notice how as people left the chruch, they became more and more miserable. The house of God provided and continues to provide a strong message of hope. But people would rather bask in their sinful and destructive habits.

Also my Grandmother stopped going to churches after the child ab*se scandal in the Catholic Church. And the only reason people are more miserable is late stage capitalism grinding us into the dirt. They went into someone's space and disrespected it. If they wanted a beautiful space then get one like one of the many museums around NY. They should sanctify the sanctuary; it was disrespected and desecrated by the funeral goers.
i think that was not the best venue for that event. merely the fact of her atheism should have been enough for the church to be like "nope, we do this for believers" and that would totally be their right.
the mourners have every right to conduct themselves in this way. but maybe they should have held it at a satanic temple, they are very welcoming.
