Since putting out this video, its come to my attention that Daft Punk likely did actually sign off on this project. However, I'd say for now that I still stand by the main points of this video. When doing research for this video, the interview with Thomas Bangalter where he kept saying how he was concerned about the use of AI kept popping up so without any official response from Daft Punk on this film as of the time of writing I had made the assumption that Daft Punk wouldn't have signed off on this. After putting this video out I found a reddit post by one of the r/daftpunk mods which claimed that Daft Punk, as well as Cédric Hervet, their creative director, have signed off on the project. I usually don't use reddit when conducting research for my videos since many claims don't end up being credible or backed with a source. This reddit post doesn't link to any official sources but after doing some more research myself I found some video interviews from Cédric Hervet about the film that would mean this post is accurate. I apologize for the mistake on my part. The interview itself has like 50 views on youtube so as you can imagine it was quite tricky to find and didn't show up in my initial round of research, but I did want to correct it in this comment. Most of the reddit post is about why a proper 4k remaster isn't possible, which is a pretty interesting read. But I'm still of the opinion that it would have been a better and less distracting product to just release the 480p version in theaters. The reddit post claims that this was a passion project and not the work of some greedy corporate executive. I do have some questions about it though. For example if it was such a passion project why was there not more time and effort taken in order to manually correct the AI visual mistakes? Why does it still look so bad and so rushed? In an interview given by Cédric Hervet he says that "every frame of the film has been checked for quality" but from watching the film we can see that is so objectively untrue due to all the glaring mistakes that are still present. There are some mentions of budget being the reason for this. While that may be true, I'm still a little skeptical as some of the fan remasters look significantly better than this remaster. I also believe that a 480p version released would've cost significantly less budget and been more appealing to the fans. Finally I am not comfortable with the idea of sending a message to corporate Hollywood that this practice of AI upscaling is okay, as it would simply give them more leeway to attempt this lackluster practice on future projects at the expense of the consumer. For those reasons I'm still leaving this video up, but I wanted to correct that one piece of misinformation in the video. Fanmade Remaster: th-cam.com/video/ECC9fVomlJU/w-d-xo.html Interview where Thomas Bangalter from Daft Punk speaks out against AI usage: www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-65140938 Reddit post www.reddit.com/r/DaftPunk/comments/1gh7gr4/interstella_5555_remaster_faqdiscussion_thread/ Cédric Hervet interview: th-cam.com/video/xRej2Mkj3fc/w-d-xo.html
All the AI upscales for movies and TV shows made by fans I've seen online for free look amazing but all the AI upscaling work I've seen by commercial releases is horrible. Why is that?
Its tricky to say without knowing the exact techniques and AI models used by both groups. Looking at this fan remake th-cam.com/video/ECC9fVomlJU/w-d-xo.html it looks like there aren't any interpolated frames, so it isn't actually trying to add more frames that didn't exist in the original video. It might also be the case that for some of these fan videos they were corrected with a manual pass after the AI model did its thing if it was using an AI, but thats just a guess on my end. Maybe someone more knowledgeable can help chime in th-cam.com/video/_KRb_qV9P4g/w-d-xo.html This video about how AI is used to interpolate frames gives some examples that look pretty similar to what we saw in this film screening and why it looks so bad
To address your concern that the Reddit post "doesn't link to any official sources" the person who made the post is in direct communication with Daft Punk's team. They are the admin of the official Daft Punk Discord and get information directly from the people working on Daft Punk's behalf.
@@GotWub I hear you there, and the information did end up being credible but I think you can still never be too sure when it comes to the internet where anyone can claim anything. Seeing that post is what led me to track down the interviews though
@@hectormanuel8360 Because they don't want to actually do the hard work and don't want to spend a lot of money for cleanup artists. Like I've said in another comment, this may not even be AI, but shoddy upscaling work with free software. You could get this effect with a 15 year old playing with Virtualdub back in the early 2010's... I just... forget the filter I used when I was younger to replicate this effect.
Remember how Yellow Submarine was remastered completely by hand because the restoration team felt that it was such a landmark of animation that it needed to be restored by traditional means and without computers because they thought, while they definitely would've been useful, they would've robbed the movie some of its visual appeal. Y'know, the complete opposite of this.
It's extremely noticeable at the beginning with "One More Time" where the characters' faces are melty and warped. The whole thing isn't unwatchable, but could've been upscaled wayyy better.
Thomas Bangalter say he’s concerned with the rise of AI … even saying that’s the reason why he abandoned the daft punk character…making this AI ‘remaster’ even more sickening
@@JerbloFilmwell shit that just made me kinda depressed. If anything, this shows that is less about the technology itself and more about the usage we give it. It's the same thing the say about fire arms; guns don't kill people, people kill people
My 5 year old is a huge Daft Punk fan and was so excited about this screening. He noticed within minutes that something was off and kept asking me why everything was blurry :( a real shame that they didn't do a better job on this
I completely agree that they didn't need to use AI for this due to the cult following. Ticket preorders for the screening in my relatively small city sold out in a few days, and they ended up doing two screenings (last time I checked, the second one was almost sold out too). People aren't going to see a limited screening of Interstella 5555 because of the visual quality. They're gonna see it because they're already Daft Punk fans, and it's a really cool unique opportunity. What a shame.
In my theatre, they also fudged up the left and right speakers to be very muffled, so my experience consisted of vocals, kick, snare and bass and the occasional incredibly imbalanced sound effect. Having not seen the film before, I couldn't put my finger on what was wrong with the motion initially so thanks for confirming... Probably the worst movie experience I've ever had, and a shame given an excellent piece of art buried underneath.
I watched it today with a friend and we were SHOCKED. All the other people in the theater were as horrified as us, it looks terrible and it’s ironic that it goes against the movie values and themes. I hate seeing this wonderful work of art in this conditions, as you said we would’ve been happier to see the screenings without an upscaling or remastering, it would’ve been su much better that way. As a big fan of their I wanted to give it a try but it ruined the experience to me and all the other people, very disappointing..
Sadly there is no 2K or 1080p master. The film was only done in 480p for some unknown reason and then converted to PAL from NTSC meaning a quality drop. Fucking sucks that this happened. Keep your DVD's.
yup it was digitally drawn and coloured in standard definition iirc, there is no high res 35mm film or cells to rescan to improve the quality. Plus as you say it's been converted from NTSC to Pal (and then back for NTSC releases) leading to ghost frames, Apparently Toei don't even have the original NTSC master anymore. Considering all the hurdles that had to be overcome, the A.I. mush is very minimal. And it's not as poor as some recent AI remasters as since there's no film grain you don't get the awful artifacts from grain removal. It would have been nice if some of the mushy bits could have been manually tweaked to look better, but I'm sure this is something I and others in the community will take a stab at improving if we get a blu-ray release that we can work from. If the remaster had been handled better we wouldn't have to though so I somewhat appreciate the complaints. But overall it's really not as bad as people are making out
Toei Animation use 480p for most of their low budget animation back then, a lot of TV series was also like that, and I think they are the one who also transition from film to digital early on. so yeah it was the mindset back then that made them did it on low resolution
From memory I recall Daft Punk approached the head of Toei animation to ask if they would animate "One More Time" and gave them the album to listen to. Toei apparently said "screw that! We're animating the entire album!" I still have the DVD of Interstellar 5555 :)
I went to the Tribeca Film Festival screening in June for the remaster feeling happy and my smile turned into disappointment in under 3 minutes the moment I saw the AI slop that ruined almost every scene in the film. There was a panel after the screening which included their manager and he said that when making this film there weren’t that many resources to use due to the budget which explains why certain characters didn’t have full detail but during the remaster process, he decided to use AI to “enchance” and upscale the film from 480p to 2160p (4K). He also said both him and the duo approved of this remaster made by an AI company, which put me in a state of disbelief because there’s no way in hell they would approve of this mess and now that it’s out in the wild, I’m not surprised it’s getting the reaction it deserves. At least I still have a copy of the original 480p version of this film because you know they’re going to replace the original music videos with a “4K remaster” on their TH-cam page.
Dunno if it’s a proof of their agreement but I was at the Paris screening at the UGC Normandie back in June and Thomas Bangalter was there, I guess he is fine with it…
When I was first doing research for this video I couldnt find any major news publications that had a response from Daft Punk about the film remaster but after seeing your comment I did some more digging and it looks like they did indeed sign off on the project, atleast from what they said from these film festival interviews. It does still leave me with a weird taste in my mouth since Thomas Bangalter has spoken out against AI usage in the past, but I pinned a comment to this video with some corrections. Thanks for bringing this to my attention @97nelsn @benmarciano
When I heard about interstellar 5555 coming to my local movie theater I was so ecstatic about it! I even bought my tickets and requested a day off. But as soon as I found out they’re using Ai to “remaster” the movie I immediately returned my ticket. There is no excuse for cooperations to find a cheapest way to remaster this iconic movie. It also defeats the message behind the movie which is insulting. I’m glad I returned my ticket. I’m just so sad that the movie was re-released like this.
im glad to see such a response to the use of ai interpolation, in theaters i was constantly sidetracked at the glaring mistakes due to the upscaling, while i appreciated the robust sound experience the entire animated piece left a sour spot in my mouth, and it sucks bc i was really stoked to see the screening of the remaster only to have the visuals have a stroke.
I was watching the scene were AI change the memories of the Crescendolls and the irony was not lost on me. I was so excited about going to see this in theaters I recommended the film to a young client of mine, the embarrassment I felt when I started to notice the sloppy AI job was immense. What an awful experience all of this was.
I didn't see any of the trailers that showed the upscale, and I got front row seats. From the first animation of a star twinkling in the background, my thoughts were "Oh no..." After that, the picture degraded so badly, it was legitimately hard to tell what was going on. The AI handled the Cel Animation as if it were supposed to be moving in real time, morphing and warping things, destroying original line-art to create a mishmash of neighboring frames. The AI handled the background paintings as if they were Cel Animation, attempting to vectorize and denoise to the point where the details were replaced with large swaths of the same colour. The lighting and bloom effects were badly damaged, as the AI tries to take anything transparent and wrap it around whatever goes below it. Double-exposure shots like the ones in concert scenes looked like datamoshes. Not to mention, since the team doing the remastering didn't seek out any sources of a higher generation than the publicly released PAL DVD (meaning one could do a better remaster at home given enough knowledge and skill) the AI had lots of trouble with that DVD's issues. Ghosting led to frame smearing, Interlacing artifacts became wobbliness in the picture, and so on and so forth. The audio was alright (I noticed some Loudness War-esque limiting but that's just my Mastering Engineer ears), but honestly I like my stereo system at home better than the one at the theater I went to. I walked out of the theater two songs in, as even the promise of an exclusive bonus after the movie could not keep me in my seat. You're better off getting a DVD copy and watching it on a CRT TV.
The bonus content at the end was just all the Homework-era D.A.F.T. videos, followed by the “Infinity Repeating” video. After that, there was a brief clip of Daft Punk waving at the screen from their 2001 Japan interview.
It really is a shame considering they could've just showed the original work without even touching it, and everyone would've loved it. It's an even bigger shame that some people out there see this smeary trash and can't see anything wrong with it. And the biggest shame of all is that they did all this in the face of the message of the work. You can tell the people that ran this didn't even consider the meaning of the work for even a single second...
The worst part about this to me was that the theater in CT I went to had blown speakers and no bass. It was so bad that the neighboring theater's action scenes were heard well over the sad excuse of an audio presentation we were experiencing.
What always gets me is the people who act like bring up the AI argument is invalid "I didn't notice it, it was more about the vibe. It's not that deep." But it is! I get it was animated digitally, so its hard to remaster without a source. But other studios have made better attempts than just running it through an AI system for an afternoon. At the very least it's distorting what the original animators intended, and gives studios the go ahead that fans will put up with half assed work. Hopefully there will be another opportunity to view Inerstella 5555 unaltered on the big screen in my lifetime. Just one more time
Was in the theater the other day for this because seeing Interstella at the movies is a once in a lifetime opportunity. But I noticed it was AI upscaled as soon as it started and was like, "Oh no, this looks bad." I actually physically cringed in my seat because it was distracting, but I mellowed out over time. Overall, I'm glad I went because Discovery bangs and sounded great at my showing. But visually, it was a mixed bag, muddying up amazing Japanese animation.
This is what I thought. Everything else was great but the ai upscale was just something i couldn’t ignore. Even heard some guy talking about how it looked ai upscaled
Was in the theater yesterday. Still enjoyed, giving that I wasn't born in the right time and place to see it in the theater when it first released. But I was really disappointed and it's an exaggeration to call it remaster
The only way I was able to enjoy this film as much as I wanted to, was to take off my glasses, slightly blur my vision, and use my built in CRT filter. Honestly if they had actually just used a CRT filter like they do on retro games, it would have been 1000x more watchable. Also at my theater, before the movie, they played a promo QR code for an Interstella Snapchat filter. During the promo the sound was amazingly loud and crisp, but during the actual film the theater's sound was at a normal movie's volume. I really wish they would have cranked it up a little more. Edibles helped too
Totally fair criticism. I’ve never seen the movie before and had no idea about the ai use when I went into it. Definitely noticed some off stuff while watching it that really stuck out but honestly I’m just really happy I was able to see it at all in the theater. Was still a really great experience imo.
The problem is not that they used AI upscalling, but the problem is how much they messed up the AI Upscalling. It looked really good in the close ups but really bad in shots with many characters and much going own. At the end of the day I was still glad to see it in theaters
the fact that they seem to have used an free consumer grade level of ai upscaling for this project is shocking, i believe a fan has done an actual proper 2k remaster a while ago online its much better
It's INSANELY ironic what the movie is about and what we get with this remaster. Corporate greed is first and foremost these days with ANY product and you're foolish to think otherwise.
Dude daft punk only upscaled it because they wanted people to see the dead artists lifeswork MORE CLEARLY, and people literally leave the fucking cinema even though this is the first time the movie was released GLOBALLY, do you really think that people would rather see a movie that's better than leiji matsumoto's lifeswork? That would've been insanely more awful/ I can't believe people would just abandon both legacies at the same time just because of the quality of the original video. God I hate how picky people are.
I also saw this in theaters and was so distracted by the AI remaster the entire time that I did not actually even enjoy one of my favorite albums of all time. Matsumoto-san is rolling in grave at this.
I travelled to another city to see this movie, 2 hours away form my town. Then i saw it. I... Liked some parts yes, but some parts were so blur and ugly, some colors where so fused that i just closed my eyes and just enjoyed the music.
In fairly certain Daft Punk was involved, after the movie ended my theater screened some other Daft Punk music videos then went black for a minute to let everyone start walking out before showing Daft Pank waving goodbye
as an OG 2007 Daft Punk youtuber/member of The Daft Club fan website back in the day, the kid in me wanted to watch this so so bad... but the more i thought about the AI aspect, the more it turned me off more and more... i hyped myself up for it, for over a month... but when it came to the day of screening, after hearing about the AI upscale - i decided against going to watch it and im glad i did... movie tickets are way too expensive in New Zealand these days... especially for an AI upscale - i would rather just watch the DVD i have somewhere
That's unfortunate. I was really hoping that AI could be used to properly restore the movie "Macross: Do You Remember Love?" which had out of focus frames in many scenes. Maybe it's not about the tool, but the craftsman who wields it.
I had to miss it unfortunately because it's finals week for my classes, but I guess I'm glad to hear I didn't miss much due to how bad the AI upscaling was
Don't know, but either we had the original one shown in Barcelona or the whole audience (almost 100% full) was as shortsighted as I am, lol. We were all thrilled and it was awesome to watch and listen in theaters, and to me it looked just like I remembered from the DVD copy I have. I was so happy I didn't cancel the tickets since I read these AI thingie just a day before and was considering backing out. Glad I didn't !
@@Cargo_BayIt takes a lot to make people wanna leave, specially since they already paid their ticket. I too am suspicious of all the people in the comments claiming people left when they noticed the AI upscaling. The only movie in my life I ever felt the need to walk out of was Last Jedi and even then I stayed on my seat (mostly out of disbelief/morbid curiosity)
@@Cargo_Bay I went, and I also stood up and left. I have access to some great sound systems if I want to listen to music, so I didn't feel the need to sit there and watch an AI slop machine stain art that is precious to me.
I didnt even know this was coming to theaters until like 2 days ago. If I had, I would have wasted my money and time and been pissed. I still have the original movie on DVD and just finished watching it.
as a fan of Late great leji Matsumoto (the guy responsible for the anime side) this remake should never have been greenlit. it feels a shame to his early 2000's era of animation.
Honestly, while some noticeable parts looked bad, I think it looked fine. It was my first viewing of the movie, and I think I enjoyed it a lot more because I saw it for what it was: the movie. I didn’t really care about the ‘remaster’ part, since that wasn’t what I was there for, and I think that’s why I enjoyed it more than most people probably did, and I think the same went for the rest of the people in the theater, since nobody walked out, if I’m correct. I think that when you look at it as Interstella 5555, and not Interstella 5555 remastered, you’ll probably enjoy it a lot more. And I get that people are upset, I really do, but I just really didn’t see too many problems aside from any screens and/or other small things. I still enjoyed my viewing, though, and I’m happy that I at least managed to watch the movie, because an AI upscale is at least better than nothing.
i saw when they streamed this "remaster" live on twitch and was fully dissapointed on how the mangled the movie. I cant believe they used that same file many years later to stream it on an even bigger screen.
Honestly, I really, REALLY hope they NEVER replace the OG online with the upscale. Just to be safe though, I made sure to pirate the OG version of the film, since I KNEW that using AI to upscale it would have NEVER ended well.
When i went to see it, it played in the cheapest, most run-down theater in town. The audio was on only ONE speaker in the front right. No surround sound mixing. In a large area, imagine someone bringing in their personal JBL party speaker playing it on 75% volume. It was a garbage experience
I'm glad I'm not the only one. I find this unacceptable regardless of the excuses or lack therefore. They didn't need to rush this at all unless they're going broke and if that's the case, talk about disappointment. I've never seen the film in theaters and my heart is still broken about their split so I decided since I'll never see them in concert, at least I'll get to watch my favorite film by them in IMAX. I thought they would possibly refine it a bit for proper theater use and boy oh boy did I feel so gaslit. As soon as it started I felt like something was off. The animation looked like they made it brighter/fresh in some areas, but it felt rushed, out of sync, the blank faces killed me (thought about how even JoJo has better "bad" animation than this and at least it's funnier) and the volume was so low I wasn't sure if it was the theater or the film itself. All I can say is near the end of the film it noticeably became louder, the way it was supposed to be. A good 80% of the film sounded like I was listening to Daft Punk at home on my own stereo and I hated that. Wtf is IMAX for if it's not really? I feel like they changed other things that I can't quite put my finger on, but I left kinda bummed. Even sucked it up and stayed for the "extra content" and once when I found out what it was I wasn't happy at all. I didn't want what they showed, I thought maybe we would get an official goodbye, exclusive interviews, something more valuable than "let's play our famous music videos". Note I left after 4 music videos so I have no idea if there was something more. I felt bad for the person next to me because they've never seen it before and I had a feeling they weren't very impressed. I still cried because I always cry when I watch Interstella 5555, but these tears were different and strange. My tears were mainly for the memories and how I felt when I first watched the film. I felt too disconnected in theaters because of the mistakes and I feel cheated. I feel like Daft Punk hit me in the face and told me it was a hug. They've made me side eye all of their motives now and this just wasn't on my 2024 bingo card.
I went to see it, and had a good time because of nostalgia. I could absolutely tell it had been upscaled by a computer, presumably because they didn't have the time, money, or inclination to do it frame by frame with human hands. That said, I think if they had just blown up the DVD to a huge movie screen it probably would have looked just as bad, just in a different way (indistinct and fuzzy, as opposed to super clean and sometimes wrong). As much as I love this movie, it wasn't made with theatrical distribution in mind, just to air on TV and DVD. The real danger I see is if this remaster replaces the original version, and in the future this version is all preservationists have to work from. Hopefully those old DVD will still stick around.
I did not discover this until I was 39 (about a Year ago). I feel like I really missed out and I wish I could have seen them live pre-retirement. Better late than never though, this is a gem that should not be tampered with. I don't feel like the up-scales look too bad, but like I said, I did not see the originals so I have no true context- just what is available on YT (proly the up-scaled stuff). What's ironic about this- corporate greed is what made this 'remake' possible. They didn't break up, they retired. It wasn't a bad thing for either of them, they're still friends. To me, breaking up means too much drama happened. Going separate ways is a different thing. This is all just words/terminology though. I do interpolate a lot of low fps animated stuff though since I just don't like low fps stuff, but that is my personal preference. I appreciate the appreciation of original stuff and the low fps has its place which should be preserved. I do agree much though about old things being corrupted by new tech and losing the plot/point along the way. There seems to be little originality anymore, just rehashing/'upgrading' of existing stuff which corrupts it. Nice vid. I'll sub this :D
Seeing this in the cinema was such a blast as a big Daft Punk fan. This is my favourite movie of all time and seeing it in a theatre with tons of like minded people was really magical. However, I think I speak for everyone in the theatre when I say that it would have been much more enjoyable if they just screened the original non-"upscaled" version. It just looks tacky and it really is ironic given the nature of the films themes. The only redeeming quality was the ability to experience it with a group of fellow fans with theatre quality audio - however that was another issue in mine and from what I've seen in other peoples cinemas too. Someone had to physically go and ask a staff member to turn up the volume bc it was super quiet at first. I know Thomas himself is absolutley against this kind of use of AI, but I believe (and I may be wrong) that Guy actually is a big advocate for this kind of stuff. Such a shame that this went the way it did. The whole celebration of this film from this crappy re-release, the awful management of the limited time store releases (people scalped a lot of the viynls & CDs released to commemorate Interstella), hiked prices on merch that turned out failry low quality and just mismarketing - its just so ironic to me. I highly recommend checking out the 2k fan upscale on the internet archive. Thats always my way for watching this in the future! Great video
I didn’t know until hours before going to see it that it was an AI remaster, I’m so sad, there were so many details that were blurred 😭💔 and I’m pretty sure in the original work they were details that were even hand painted. Also, idk if it was just my local theater but the sound was just not it, either. I was really looking forward to the experience of the big screen and sound. I agree and think if they’d just have the original version, I would’ve been happy to go watch it lol both visual and sound quality was bad, I’d rather stick to the TH-cam playlist with ads & my speakers or headphones 🥲
😮 well I'm shocked. I saw this movie the night it premiered, and it was my 1st time watching it too. I didn't know they used AI, so I wasn't noticing any of those errors. I thought the movie story overall was fantastic, but it's disappointing they did a lazy touch up for this "remastered" version. I hope if they do re-release it, it's the actual original version and not the AI touchup.
They only used AI so it could match with the High definition on the movie screen you can always watch the original by buying it on Amazon or watching the music videos on TH-cam
Thanks for making this. I made the mistake of going in without watching the trailer and felt like I had been scammed. Worst movie going experience of my life. They ruined it, the line work was muddy and blobbed together. The eyes were asymmetrical blobs that robbed the characters of any soul. Still images could be cherry-picked and panned around the screen but shots where characters change size or turn just get fuzzed out entirely. Unacceptable. An insult to the artists who made the original.
They show this every Saturday on Toonami Aftermath. Lots of recurring memes in the chat. That's also where I figured out Veridis Quo is Very Disco haha.
I'd only seen the poster and tickets for this "remaster" the day before I went and watched it. I was really excited cause I'd never seen the whole movie (and cause I went with my mom who loves Daft Punk :3), I was so disappointed when I realized pretty much immediately it was done with AI. If I'd known or had seen the trailers I wouldn't have gone at all, honestly felt like I was tricked :(
I can't believe one of my favorite recent horror movies has now been ruined for me because i didn't realize it used AI. Learning this from a Daft Punk related video as well 😭😭😭
I was bothered the whole screening because of the ai, it was a shame because I really liked the movie, the art direction and the music. For like the first minute I was impressed by the beauty of the movie until I noticed the ai on the characters, they even could've mixed this version with parts of the original movie and I feel it could've been better that what we got, it's a shame that this unique event of watching the film in theatres with high quality sound was kinda messed up by the ai
They're so shameless they simply took the remaster that was on TH-cam that some guy made on their computer, they literally uploaded the monstrosity of those screenshots to their website
I love how the whole point of the movie, and in a way, existence of Daft Punk itself is about how industry eats your soul. And industry ate the soul of the movie, artists and fans just for a little cash grab. It's so nice to see that hollywood has managed tu perverted another thing that had total opposite meaning of what they want us to "get"🤣
My take on the whole thing is that it was a fun and unique experience to have. It looked pretty bad in a lot of areas, but I can sorta understand why they went with an AI "upscale", given the master is probably long gone by now. Still, it would have been preferred to have it in its original form, rather than AI "upscaled" and marketed as a remaster. Calling it such is a bit of a stretch. Couple that with the duo's thoughts on modern day AI use and you got yourself a morally questionable re-release. I will say that my experience was good overall, though that could just be because I haven't seen the original. (It also served as a nice bonding moment between my father and I, so that definitely holds a ton of weight.)
I really like that actually, at the end of the day I think film is about connecting with people, whether it be the characters on the screen or the people you go with
I went to the showing, and yeah the AI upscaling really took away from a lot of the wider shots or smaller details. But for my friends who had never seen the original, they had a good time and didn't notice. I thankfully own the original DVD. Will have to hold it tighter now as I'm sure any re-releases will have the AI treatment.
I was excited to see it last week when I found out about the remaster... didn't know it was ai remastered. And I was beating myself up for not being able to watch it at all this weekend. Dang. Seems like it is better off in my memories then seen as an "ai upscale" in a theater.
I watched it and loved it. But yeah there was a lot of moments that were potato quality. It didn't break my immersion but I noticed it a few times. I still loved that I watched it on the big screen. They should have had the people that made space dandy fix this and flim.
I was fortunate enough to have watched it in a theatre back in 2003, and I have the DVD box. I was really happy when they announced this screening, and I realised it would be available in my country, but as soon as I watched the trailer, I refused to spend money to watch this sad "upgrade".
I really wanted to see this but on the day of the showing i saw it was AI and decided not to go with doubts in my mind about my decision..im so happy i didnt go because i dont have the money to waste on something i can watch at home for free at better quality
It’s a bit odd. While AI would’ve helped improve older videos especially this already made poor resolution version of the film. There was no physical way to improve an already formatted standard video, unless you trace over the film’s missing details. I heard from others that there was a different version of this film that is said to have been better than what we’ve got so I wonder what happened to that.
IMHO The visuals of this year's screening was great, the only bad thing was the audio volume, the first 3 songs were kinda quiet, the rest of the album was OK, and the end "extras"(spoiler) were so loud; Maybe it was only my cinema T.T
Im actually glad that i missed out on watching now after seeing this video. I have fond memories of this movie and hearing how they did this movie a disservice is terrible
I really wish you would have put footage of the AI remaster up alongside the same footage in the original version so how bad the AI remaster is could be more easily compared. I can hardly tell anything is different in the video other than the colors are a bit brighter. If you want to sell me on the fact that the remaster is bad you have to show me how bad the remaster is by putting it against the original's greatness
Thats fair - the only footage I currently have available is the footage from the trailer which are generally the better looking clips. Maybe if they put this out for streaming someone will do a side by side comparison of some of the more egregious shots
I saw it in theaters and it was definitely distracting at some points but it didn't entirely ruin the experience for me. Probably because it was the closest I (and a friend) can get to being at a Daft Punk "concert" considering they have broken up (oof) I was more disappointed with the "Extra Features" teased at the beginning of the screening though. I would appreciated it more if they put the I5555 interview instead of the Homework music videos as the "extras"
Saw it in theaters, maybe it was just me but the ai was only noticeable to me at the start. by the end it seemed like it was gone completely, I didn’t see the melty backround faces at all by too long, maybe they saw how bad it looked and stopped using it half way through?
I felt Pretty much the same as you. I had to try to ignore it so as not to ruin the whole experience. (It wasn't cheap, after all) I managed to stop thinking about it and I had a good time regardless, but I would lie if I said it wasn't a big disappointment. I would add that they could've easily adapted the mix for a theater sound system, but it was just stereo. IDK if that's te same everywhere or it was to do with my country/theater.
Really dissapointing. I didn't even go to a theater to see it, but honestly i would much rather watch the movie in original standard definition at home, than paying 12 euros for AI slop
I knew it... I dunno if I saw something related to AI on the trailer or the comments but I knew it already what a shame You gonna tell me they dont have like the original film already on a big resolution, you cant tell me this original animation has being made on 480 resolution image... well or maybe yes, I dunno how animation works but I dont believe the original work has too much of a little resolution enough to upscale natively on any cinema I almost paid to see this, I was kind of in a doubt because since this very back in the day, now Daft Punk its just an IP for Sony, its not what we used to see and hear, but just for nostalgia, Im glad I didnt paid, thanks for your review
Maybe this is a hot take, but as an interpretation - Perhaps this movie being AI upscaled is a very potent, very effective anti-AI force. If this is the quality we can expect from a machine that runs on greed, and not even the most obscure of our treasured memories are safe... Well for me thats a powerful piece of art, and the success metric should be for it to have a box office taking well into the red.

Maybe someone more knowledgeable can help chime in
th-cam.com/video/_KRb_qV9P4g/w-d-xo.html This video about how AI is used to interpolate frames gives some examples that look pretty similar to what we saw in this film screening and why it looks so bad
When did they remaster the yellow sub?
doing things the proper way?
when we can fuck it up for a profit?
you must be dreaming.
Completely different budget.
The difference is Beatles fans are even more pretentious than Daft Punk fans
Agreed, have a bunch of dedicated artists instead work on making the film widescreen, do NOT abuse AI to make a worse product!
It's extremely noticeable at the beginning with "One More Time" where the characters' faces are melty and warped. The whole thing isn't unwatchable, but could've been upscaled wayyy better.
Thomas Bangalter say he’s concerned with the rise of AI … even saying that’s the reason why he abandoned the daft punk character…making this AI ‘remaster’ even more sickening
where or when did he say this?

Time to add that as yet another notch as to why I hate AI
My 5 year old is a huge Daft Punk fan and was so excited about this screening. He noticed within minutes that something was off and kept asking me why everything was blurry :( a real shame that they didn't do a better job on this
Whats funny is that if they release the original 480p version, it would've looked way more coherent.
saw it in theaters today and it was so damn distracting, genuinely can’t believe it got cleared to be screened
Was it super obvious? I watched the trailer and I knew something looked off on the back of my mind but wasn't too distracting or anything
@@alexsilva28I might be blind bc I saw it in theaters (granted I was a few drinks deep) & I didn’t notice anything
@@greetingsmars Yeah, it was super obvious. Wish I had been half drunk during my showing so I didn't notice
SAME FOR ME!! The music sounded so muffled especially in the extra videos after the movie ended sounded like i was underwater
Trust me, fish up an OG rip online, it will be so much better
I watched it today with a friend and we were SHOCKED. All the other people in the theater were as horrified as us, it looks terrible and it’s ironic that it goes against the movie values and themes. I hate seeing this wonderful work of art in this conditions, as you said we would’ve been happier to see the screenings without an upscaling or remastering, it would’ve been su much better that way.
As a big fan of their I wanted to give it a try but it ruined the experience to me and all the other people, very disappointing..
No joke, I’ve been getting ads for this for a few weeks and I thought it was an unofficial youtube remaster, looked completely amateur.
Ive seen none of its ads
There's a free 4k upscale on TH-cam better than the theatrical run by elcoronelGOD
Sadly there is no 2K or 1080p master. The film was only done in 480p for some unknown reason and then converted to PAL from NTSC meaning a quality drop. Fucking sucks that this happened. Keep your DVD's.
a lot of music videos from that time have the same problem, poor resolution and quality since the average television was practically 360p
yup it was digitally drawn and coloured in standard definition iirc, there is no high res 35mm film or cells to rescan to improve the quality.
But overall it's really not as bad as people are making out
@@ZoeysVinylShelf There's a fanmade 2K upscale on internet archive
@@mf_rat oh I didn't know that. I know someone had uploaded the wip upscale that was Live streamed earlier this year
Toei Animation use 480p for most of their low budget animation back then, a lot of TV series was also like that, and I think they are the one who also transition from film to digital early on. so yeah it was the mindset back then that made them did it on low resolution
From memory I recall Daft Punk approached the head of Toei animation to ask if they would animate "One More Time" and gave them the album to listen to. Toei apparently said "screw that! We're animating the entire album!"
I still have the DVD of Interstellar 5555 :)
I can enjoyed it
Dunno if it’s a proof of their agreement but I was at the Paris screening at the UGC Normandie back in June and Thomas Bangalter was there, I guess he is fine with it…
When I was first doing research for this video I couldnt find any major news publications that had a response from Daft Punk about the film remaster but after seeing your comment I did some more digging and it looks like they did indeed sign off on the project, atleast from what they said from these film festival interviews.
From the first animation of a star twinkling in the background, my thoughts were "Oh no..."
After that, the picture degraded so badly, it was legitimately hard to tell what was going on.
Literally I would love to see it in theaters! I would’ve preferred that
The worst part about this to me was that the theater in CT I went to had blown speakers and no bass. It was so bad that the neighboring theater's action scenes were heard well over the sad excuse of an audio presentation we were experiencing.
What always gets me is the people who act like bring up the AI argument is invalid "I didn't notice it, it was more about the vibe. It's not that deep."
But it is!
Whenever true passion and love seep through in a product is despite corporate greed and should be appreciated
Glad I've still got my DVD, which looks fine.
Ai is only being used by profiteers and pirates, Leiji Matsumoto is dead and daft punk is broken up so who’s profiting here?
Can we just ban ai art already?
I also saw this in theaters and was so distracted by the AI remaster the entire time that I did not actually even enjoy one of my favorite albums of all time. Matsumoto-san is rolling in grave at this.
I travelled to another city to see this movie, 2 hours away form my town. Then i saw it. I... Liked some parts yes, but some parts were so blur and ugly, some colors where so fused that i just closed my eyes and just enjoyed the music.
I think they are forgetting the reason we love good animation is because it is not easy to make, that is kind of the point.
In fairly certain Daft Punk was involved, after the movie ended my theater screened some other Daft Punk music videos then went black for a minute to let everyone start walking out before showing Daft Pank waving goodbye

but when it came to the day of screening, after hearing about the AI upscale - i decided against going to watch it
and im glad i did... movie tickets are way too expensive in New Zealand these days... especially for an AI upscale - i would rather just watch the DVD i have somewhere
I remember seeing parts of it as music videos.
That's unfortunate. I was really hoping that AI could be used to properly restore the movie "Macross: Do You Remember Love?" which had out of focus frames in many scenes. Maybe it's not about the tool, but the craftsman who wields it.
If the frames were out of focus in the original filming of the cells that not really "restoration"?
I had to miss it unfortunately because it's finals week for my classes, but I guess I'm glad to hear I didn't miss much due to how bad the AI upscaling was
Don't know, but either we had the original one shown in Barcelona or the whole audience (almost 100% full) was as shortsighted as I am, lol. We were all thrilled and it was awesome to watch and listen in theaters, and to me it looked just like I remembered from the DVD copy I have. as a fan of Late great leji Matsumoto (the guy responsible for the anime side) this remake should never have been greenlit. it feels a shame to his early 2000's era of animation.
The best decision is to buy the original DVD movie. Pictures and sound quality cannot be simply matched in this "remaster".
i saw when they streamed this "remaster" live on twitch and was fully dissapointed on how the mangled the movie.
When we said use AI Upscale we didn’t mean make an actually mean by programming an AI to increase the quality.
I actually demanded a refund and I got it. I recommend everyone who saw this mess to do so as well
I'm glad I'm not the only one.
I will comment so this reaches even more people
I went to see it, and had a good time because of nostalgia.
Wait, there was a whole anime to those music videos?!
every song in the album had a music video, and all played together is the movie
Well, im going back to the OG dvd
😮 well I'm shocked. I saw this movie the night it premiered, and it was my 1st time watching it too. I didn't know they used AI, so I wasn't noticing any of those errors. I thought the movie story overall was fantastic, but it's disappointing they did a lazy touch up for this "remastered" version. I hope if they do re-release it, it's the actual original version and not the AI touchup.
So the film itself became an example of what the film is about.
That's also where I figured out Veridis Quo is Very Disco haha.
i had a good time with my friends at the theatre. ending and after credits were amazing
OMG DUDE I WAS THERE FOR THIS!! I AGREE 100%!
Im glad I still have the blu-ray of the movie from 2011 or 12
I'd only seen the poster and tickets for this "remaster" the day before I went and watched it. I was really excited cause I'd never seen the whole movie (and cause I went with my mom who loves Daft Punk :3), I was so disappointed when I realized pretty much immediately it was done with AI. If I'd known or had seen the trailers I wouldn't have gone at all, honestly felt like I was tricked :(
Oh my god I knew it, I thought I was going crazy because my friends didn't notice anything but I knew something was fishy
AI remasters should have a Surgeon General's warning
I really like that actually, at the end of the day I think film is about connecting with people, whether it be the characters on the screen or the people you go with
I noticed the same. There was not attention to the details. It's a shame
Thank you so much for your honesty. Much appreciated. The irony of it all, eh? 😊
Studio Bones does awesome stuff....best intro ever..."Space Dandy is a dandy in space" 😆
Maybe if they put this out for streaming someone will do a side by side comparison of some of the more egregious shots
thank god i didnt paid to see this in the movie theater. IA is dystopic. we are living in the worst timeline and its gonna only get worse.
Thank you my friend i thought the same thing last night😤😤😤😤💯💯💯💯💯
I saw it in theaters and it was definitely distracting at some points but it didn't entirely ruin the experience for me. Probably because it was the closest I (and a friend) can get to being at a Daft Punk "concert" considering they have broken up (oof)
I was more disappointed with the "Extra Features" teased at the beginning of the screening though.
What a cash grab, this project deserves way more respect than AI upscale.
This is the greatest defiling of Leiji Matsumoto's work since Andrew Dobson!
Really dissapointing. I didn't even go to a theater to see it, but honestly i would much rather watch the movie in original standard definition at home, than paying 12 euros for AI slop
It's on youtube I think
It was cool to see in the big screen but man if Leiji Mashimoto saw this he would be appalled with good reason
I unironically would rather watch the original than the “upscaled” version
Those corpos are so greedy and out of touch, I bet not a single one of them has saw the irony of their decision to use AI on this particular movie.
I knew it... I dunno if I saw something related to AI on the trailer or the comments but I knew it already what a shame
You gonna tell me they dont have like the original film already on a big resolution, you cant tell me this original animation has being made on 480 resolution image... well or maybe yes, I dunno how animation works but I dont believe the original work has too much of a little resolution enough to upscale natively on any cinema
I almost paid to see this, I was kind of in a doubt because since this very back in the day, now Daft Punk its just an IP for Sony, its not what we used to see and hear, but just for nostalgia, Im glad I didnt paid, thanks for your review
Maybe this is a hot take, but as an interpretation -
Perhaps this movie being AI upscaled is a very potent, very effective anti-AI force. If this is the quality we can expect from a machine that runs on greed, and not even the most obscure of our treasured memories are safe... Well for me thats a powerful piece of art, and the success metric should be for it to have a box office taking well into the red.
Leiji Matsumoto was a wonderful artist
i miss him
