The Shameful Daft Punk Movie Remaster (Interstella 5555)
มุมมอง 34Kหลายเดือนก่อน
I recently saw the screening of Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem, a movie centered around the music of Daft Punk, and I was really dissapointed by how it used AI to remaster the film I'm pretty busy working on a longer video essay on another movie at the moment, but I wanted to take a little bit of time to speak on it since I thought it was important to get this message out...

Why I thought this movie was pretentious (And why I was wrong)
มุมมอง 18K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is my analysis video on Tar, a 2022 oscar nominated film directed by Todd Field and starring Cate Blanchett. I also do a bit of a movie review for it. When I first saw this film I thought it was overly pretentious and had to stop watching, but later on grew to love the film and wanted to share my story with it My Letterboxd: letterboxd.com/Jeblo/

Love the list!
i had a good time with my friends at the theatre. ending and after credits were amazing
Great list. I've clearly got to up my game 😊
miracles in cell no. 7.. wasn't expecting that one on the list bc I remember it making the rounds online within the kpop/kdrama community. Park Shinhye is in it! And she's a great actress in a lot of the popular kdramas like The Heirs, Pinocchio, etc.
World of Tomorrow is great
Seeing this in the cinema was such a blast as a big Daft Punk fan. This is my favourite movie of all time and seeing it in a theatre with tons of like minded people was really magical. However, I think I speak for everyone in the theatre when I say that it would have been much more enjoyable if they just screened the original non-"upscaled" version. It just looks tacky and it really is ironic given the nature of the films themes. The only redeeming quality was the ability to experience it with a group of fellow fans with theatre quality audio - however that was another issue in mine and from what I've seen in other peoples cinemas too. Someone had to physically go and ask a staff member to turn up the volume bc it was super quiet at first. I know Thomas himself is absolutley against this kind of use of AI, but I believe (and I may be wrong) that Guy actually is a big advocate for this kind of stuff. Such a shame that this went the way it did. The whole celebration of this film from this crappy re-release, the awful management of the limited time store releases (people scalped a lot of the viynls & CDs released to commemorate Interstella), hiked prices on merch that turned out failry low quality and just mismarketing - its just so ironic to me. I highly recommend checking out the 2k fan upscale on the internet archive. Thats always my way for watching this in the future! Great video <3
My teen life still more awkward, pathetic and ick than any movie. Was a sick movie though.
Yet everyone said not gonnlie
It was great, u are a noob.
I noticed the same. There was not attention to the details. It's a shame
I spoke about this too, it was a terrible remaster.
I'm neither american nor asian, and almost everything in the movie was extremely relatable to the point of being uncomfortable. I thought, maybe it's just relatable for guys, but my female friends who have watched the movie also felt that way. I think the largest difference depending on your own background and childhood is the feeling and message you take away from the film. To me, its main message was that life can be so much easier than we make it for ourselves and our loved ones. It's okay to mess up. Yet it doesn't become a naive story where the happy ending eliminates all problems and heals all wounds. Because that's not how life works.
Save your copies of the original🤙
When i went to see it, it played in the cheapest, most run-down theater in town. The audio was on only ONE speaker in the front right. No surround sound mixing. In a large area, imagine someone bringing in their personal JBL party speaker playing it on 75% volume. It was a garbage experience
I didnt even know this was coming to theaters until like 2 days ago. If I had, I would have wasted my money and time and been pissed. I still have the original movie on DVD and just finished watching it.
It looks great to me
the fact that they seem to have used an free consumer grade level of ai upscaling for this project is shocking, i believe a fan has done an actual proper 2k remaster a while ago online its much better
The TH-cam channel elcoronelGOD did a way better job with 4K ai work on the videos than the official released version did. You can watch these on here right now and they look fantastic.
They look like the melted spongebob popsicles you get from the ice cream truck.
I really wish you would have put footage of the AI remaster up alongside the same footage in the original version so how bad the AI remaster is could be more easily compared. I can hardly tell anything is different in the video other than the colors are a bit brighter. If you want to sell me on the fact that the remaster is bad you have to show me how bad the remaster is by putting it against the original's greatness
Thats fair - the only footage I currently have available is the footage from the trailer which are generally the better looking clips. Maybe if they put this out for streaming someone will do a side by side comparison of some of the more egregious shots
The whole 'greedy corporation CEO' stuff imo isn't really the main message in interstella. I think that's more of an overtone to the deeper concept that you can still find yourself even when you forget who you are. Even the executive has a deeper self-image that is reawakened after he's defeated. Most of the movie is focused on this heavy character development. In spite of the lack of dialogue, there's a real sense of who everyone is and what they want. Corporate greed is not the essence of what makes interstella a good story. True, this remaster rather objectively sucks, but it's not what the plot is about (and imo it's more like corporate negligence than greed, but I digress)
AI slop
Of course Daft Punk signed of on this also you don’t know what their beliefs are … you know what the characters they portray may believe but dude come on.. you really think they’re above signing off on a cash grab …..it is and was intended to be cash grab playing on the following behind the original not some passion project and that’s it
Maybe this is a hot take, but as an interpretation - Perhaps this movie being AI upscaled is a very potent, very effective anti-AI force. If this is the quality we can expect from a machine that runs on greed, and not even the most obscure of our treasured memories are safe... Well for me thats a powerful piece of art, and the success metric should be for it to have a box office taking well into the red.
So the film itself became an example of what the film is about.
I'd only seen the poster and tickets for this "remaster" the day before I went and watched it. I was really excited cause I'd never seen the whole movie (and cause I went with my mom who loves Daft Punk :3), I was so disappointed when I realized pretty much immediately it was done with AI. If I'd known or had seen the trailers I wouldn't have gone at all, honestly felt like I was tricked :(
Anyone who says that anything is "done by A.I." doesn't know what they are talking about and can freely be ignored as fearmonger idiot they are. THERE IS NO SUCH THING !!! A.I. is a pipe dream, much less practical and even "dumb" level A.I. , what we have now is isn't even good algorithmic generation engines, they are very f**king primitive. In comparison what we have now is like a babies wooden trike to the next generation of stealth fighter jet and that's being generous to what we have now. This guy should educate himself instead of crying about a crappy bands movie remastered by a chinese or korean sweashop studio on the cheap.
Leiji Matsumoto was a wonderful artist i miss him
Honestly, I really, REALLY hope they NEVER replace the OG online with the upscale. Just to be safe though, I made sure to pirate the OG version of the film, since I KNEW that using AI to upscale it would have NEVER ended well.
They used ai? Im out.
When we said use AI Upscale we didn’t mean make an actually mean by programming an AI to increase the quality.
Ai is only being used by profiteers and pirates, Leiji Matsumoto is dead and daft punk is broken up so who’s profiting here?
not surprised. the trailer already looked like diarrhea
I was fortunate enough to have watched it in a theatre back in 2003, and I have the DVD box. I was really happy when they announced this screening, and I realised it would be available in my country, but as soon as I watched the trailer, I refused to spend money to watch this sad "upgrade".
I did not discover this until I was 39 (about a Year ago). I feel like I really missed out and I wish I could have seen them live pre-retirement. Better late than never though, this is a gem that should not be tampered with. I don't feel like the up-scales look too bad, but like I said, I did not see the originals so I have no true context- just what is available on YT (proly the up-scaled stuff). What's ironic about this- corporate greed is what made this 'remake' possible. They didn't break up, they retired. It wasn't a bad thing for either of them, they're still friends. To me, breaking up means too much drama happened. Going separate ways is a different thing. This is all just words/terminology though. I do interpolate a lot of low fps animated stuff though since I just don't like low fps stuff, but that is my personal preference. I appreciate the appreciation of original stuff and the low fps has its place which should be preserved. I do agree much though about old things being corrupted by new tech and losing the plot/point along the way. There seems to be little originality anymore, just rehashing/'upgrading' of existing stuff which corrupts it. Nice vid. I'll sub this :D
At this point I’m just going to pirate this movie if it has Ai to upscale this classic. I honestly hate Ai with a passion and I wish Ai was not used in movies and we will send a message and we will gatekeep Ai as a whole.
as a fan of Late great leji Matsumoto (the guy responsible for the anime side) this remake should never have been greenlit. it feels a shame to his early 2000's era of animation.
At least my projection had us singing at the songs...
This is a disgrace to the artistry of Leiji Matsumoto. His work was gorgeous as is.
It's on youtube I think
Visually and audibly, it sucked the cinema couldn't even handle the shitty audio from the movie, buzzing and rattling the whole time. I was robbed~
I actually demanded a refund and I got it. I recommend everyone who saw this mess to do so as well
what happened to art bro
I also saw this in theaters and was so distracted by the AI remaster the entire time that I did not actually even enjoy one of my favorite albums of all time. Matsumoto-san is rolling in grave at this.
So I am going to actually defend late night with the devil and its use of generative AI. Personally I think using it for the title cards is absolute art, if you think about it AI art is a LOT like a devil deal, when you first look at it like at first glance it looks amazing, it looks fantastic and exactly like what you want, then you look at it a bit more and issues come up, and then more and more come up the more you look at it and it goes from what you wanted to an abomination! I don't think the use of generative AI for the title cards was meant to be them being lazy but meant to reflect generative AI's devil deal type details and flaws. (not defending the daftpunk one I saw that in theaters it was SHIT one of the worst AI projects like EVER it was flat out lazy and cash grabbin) (posted something like this earlier on my private account and took it down if you recognize it then yeah that is why)
off all the aplications of ai. using it to replace artists to any degree is frankly despicable. art as a concept just does not work with generative ai as a concept. it cuts out the human experience and leaves only "Aesthetics"
my favorite music videos.
Argh. People can’t just enjoy themselves these days……. Zzzz
I think they are forgetting the reason we love good animation is because it is not easy to make, that is kind of the point.
AI was used to upscale images and videos before the collective panic regarding AI use. Heck, even TH-cam recommendations are powered by AI.
