Trying Not to Get Punched At the Guadalajara Fake Market (#6)

  • This Guadalajara market is not only the largest market in Mexico, but the largest market in Latin America, period: San Juan de Dios. This is where you come for bargaining. You can find everything from vegetables to video games to Jesus figurines there. But it also has a dark side - an entire floor is devoted to, shall we say, slightly more unsavory goods, like knockoff clothing, bootleg movies and illegal genres of porn. And to top it all off, it's rumored that half the stalls are paying protection money to the Jalisco cartel. Bargaining at the cartel's fake market? Let's do it.

This dude definitely has balls of steel or he has no perception of danger i.e. (crazy). I would never go to Mexico by myself let alone a market where you obviously stand out. You could've been kidnapped and tortured with the confidence you have, halfway speaking like a local. I have admiration for you but fear at the same time. You could have easily gotten murked with a gory video that follows if they felt like it. Fuck that. I suppose the fact that he speaks their language somewhat deters the pissed off vendors when he tries to bargain. It's not worth it man stop going to Central America.

    • @LuisHernandez-hq6ki
      @LuisHernandez-hq6ki 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Not really, when they say it's not fake they really mean it, there is a lot of merchandise that come from contraband from China or even the US. They get it cheaper as they dont py taxes. Still it could be fake but they are not aware, it is easier that way than actually trying to make copies of the products manually.

    • @LuisHernandez-hq6ki
      @LuisHernandez-hq6ki 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

They got mad more because he was trying to get cheaper prices in a quite rude way . Like they know he has the money to pay and still he proposed to pay less than half of the price when they were offering the normal price as it is not a touristic place

If your're interested in visiting this place...
HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
    this place is NOT tourist-friendly
It is a great place for mexican tourists, and experienced traverlers,
you can do all your shopping in one place and get great prices.
but this place is known for having tons of pick-pockets
this place is also not family friendly, its super busy, packed, hectic, overwhelming, and a small child could easily get lost there.
its also HUGE, so kids could get tired very quickly.
ALL NAME BRAND CLOTHING IS FAKE.
they will never admit to it, because it is illegal to sell fake merch. the government turns a blind eye to it, because it provides a lot of income to the locals.
but they only ignore it as long as its not very obvious.
Every once in a while, the government will put on a show, by shutting down whole markets and taking away all the counterfeit merchandize. this can happen for multiple reasons such as political reasons, or pressure from multi-national corporations.
so yes, the sellers are gonna be aggressive towards the white guy filming and asking too many questions because he might be a secret shopper for nike or addidas. admitting that the clothing is fake could cost them their entire livelyhood.
in the video, they make the distinction between "original" and "low cost"
LOW COST = Knock-off = very cheap copy that's very noticeably fake, and costs 1/4 of the price, this is where you get your "addlas, Nikey, Tonny Hilfiger, Pumo, Vercase, Etc. " this merch is technically legal, since they're not exact copies.
ORIGINAL = Bootleg = very high quality copy that looks exactly like the original, and is meant to trick the buyer. they'll sell it to you at very close to the original price, but still at a discount.
the locals know its all fake, this is where they go shopping when they want to appear like they can afford name brand stuff.
another reason this isn't tourist friendly is that the vendors are very persistent, and if you're shy, and cant utter a stern "no" they'll keep you at their shop for a very long time.
for white people this shouldn't be an issue, because they cant be as persuasive with the language barrier, but if you're Hispanic, they'll do a lot of hard selling.
the building itself is an architectural marvel, and its very beautifully designed. it was a state-of-the-art building when it was made. but you can barely see the building itself nowadays. I grew up there in the 90's and back then it already looked like a fabella, that's the best way to describe it. but if you look for pictures of it when it was new, it was a beautiful building.
if you want to go to Guadalajara and do a lot of shopping, the place to go is TLAQUEPAQUE, a quaint town, 15 minutes away from this place.
that place IS, designed for tourists
its very beautiful, clean, pristine, and you can find most of the things you find here (at least the things that a tourist would want to buy)
the prices will be 30-40% higher, but you dont have to worry about your purse/gold chain/hat/glasses/phone getting snatched.
its also a lot more fun to navigate, beautiful to look at, has great food places, street shows, sculptures, and its a lot more calm.
they also have tourist guides and police officers trained in assisting tourists.

To Answer your question if you spent 5 minutes at all 3,400 stalls that would come to 17,000 minutes (divided by 60 for hours) would be 283 hrs (divided by 24 hrs in a day) would be roughly 11.7 days. So to spend 5 minutes at every stall would take you over 11 and a half days!

    This is my experience:
In Guadalajara, vendors inflate the price around 8% to 10% on average.
In China vendors inflate the price around 10x to 20x on average.
    Big difference.
So, no, they don't bargain like Chinese because they don't inflate the price like Chinese.
One time in China, a vendor wrote down that she wanted USD $10 from me. I wrote down USD $1. She said OK immediately; that's a sign that I still overpaid a bit much. If she had taken a second before saying yes then I overpaid only a tiny bit.

I have never been to Mexico but I am from the north of England and I really miss those type of markets. In my home town of Manchester we had two just like that, minus the adult movies. One called the underground market which was literally under the main shopping street and was like going into a subway station and the other part which was attached to the main shopping mail. All disappeared over a couple of decades ago and have been replace with chain stores, so dull now.

Depends on the place and what the local custom is, right? And when you know that stuff is fake and the shop owner knows that you know that it's fake then some bargaining happening at times should hardly come as a surprise to any party involved. I think that dude at 6:18 was just having a bad day.

It’s not being rude it’s simple know its fake and trying to make absurd amount of money when they know its fake. You can get those shirts for around 7 usd like he ask almost everywhere around the world or even lower. They see a tourist and they want to make money . It’s simply like that in most fake markets.
