    Awe, my puppy Willow is a ruby. She has a white stripe down from her forehead, down her chin, across and down her chest, along with the smallest amount on the very tip of her tail. She kind of looks like the Pokémon Eevee. I didn’t know much about the official coloring requirements of cavaliers when I bought her, but I still think she’s cute with her white (I had wanted a Blenheim originally, so I figured it was a good enough compromise). Everyone who meets her thinks she’s just the prettiest dog they’ve ever seen.

    Great info! I wonder why Ruby is an acceptable show color but not the solid black cavaliers I’ve seen popping up. Apparently they’ve always been around, and I find them quite attractive.

    I got a Ruby dog, because the neighbor no longer wanted him. He came to his forever home this past Christmas Eve. He looks a lot like Bella. I was told he was a Cocker Spaniel. He weighed 31 pounds and looked neglected. I started looking into breed standards for both Cavalier's and Cockers. His body size and weight put him into the American Cocker Spaniel group but his face looked just like Bella's face. Found out from the pervious owners daughter that he is 1/2 Cavalier and 1/2 Cocker. When we got him his coat was solid Ruby, thin and not very long. Since he has been with my family he has filled out and now weighs about 45 pounds his hair is very long and he has dust mops for feet. His coat color is changing from solid Ruby to Blonde streaks on his forehead, and around his muzzle. He is VERY friendly and loves other creatures, cat and dogs and wants pets from everyone he meets. He is a wonderful addition to my family.
    Your Bella is BEAUTIFUL.

      At 45 pounds, your dog is undoubtedly at least part Cocker. Cavaliers generally weigh 13-18 pounds as adults, and are rarely above 25 pounds. If he inherited the Cavalier temperament, you surely have a very sweet companion in him. Just watch his weight to make sure he isn't overweight, so as to minimize the chance of heart problems.Watch my video on how to tell if your dog is overweight: th-cam.com/video/tFHUDDsEvUw/w-d-xo.html

    This was a very interesting deep dive on the ruby - thank you. Most channels don’t show rubies, so I assume they’re less popular compared to the other colors? Your comment about them showing less expression makes perfect sense and I do see it now; when dogs move their face muscles, it’s hard to see the skin move if it’s all the same color.

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  ปีที่แล้ว

      The most common color you will see is the Blenheim (tan & white), and the second most common is the Tricolor (Black & White with tan markings). Rubies and Black & Tans are both more rare to find.

    We have a ruby boy. Who actually looks a lot like Bella in the face and has a lot of ch. dogs in his blood line, hellboy being one of them. But we’re constantly getting asked if he’s a mixed breed and one person went as far as to say that she had a real ckcs because hers was a Blenheim. Even after we told her he’s a pure breed. For some reason people see his Rudy coat and assume he can’t be a caviler because of it. Even some ckcs owners, though most know what he is as soon as they see him, and comment on how beautiful he is. We’ve also have gotten comments on his height, some people think he should be taller but if you look at the breed standard he’s like the prefect height. It’s just really funny to us. But he doesn’t care what anyone says and just loves getting to say hi to them. And we didn’t get him hoping he’d be beautiful or to show off, all we cared about was that the breeders were reputable and he’d be a healthy and live as long as a life as possible.
    He’s are first ckcs and we are beyond I love with him, can’t imagine a more prefect dog for us. We literally take him everywhere with us, he eats in restaurants, goes shopping, etc. If he’s not welcomed, we don’t go but who’s going to turn down a ckcs.

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I remember Hellboy very well. He did well in the show ring, and deservedly so. I particularly thought he had a very nice head.
      It's interesting that you should mention that some people think he is insufficient in height. The Breed Standard allows for lots of flexibility in interpretation, and that's where personal taste comes in. I personally would have liked Hellboy better if he had a little more length of leg, and if you look at the Cavaliers I've bred you'll see that quality. But it's really a matter of taste from one breeder to another. So you can tell people that your boy is purebred from one of the most successful breeders in the country, and is definitely within the Breed Standard.

    The rubies are sweeter& they're used more often than the others for pet food commercials, in more movies, has a song written after them. They're beautiful, yes they look innocent & pitiful, but thats an act for more loving. They can't get enough of that.

    I have a Ruby and she has tufts on her face!!!! Have you ever seen this before? She is a 5th generation purebred! And her coat changed texture when she was spayed!! She has a little white on her chin and chest. I always say "got milk?" to her. She's a living doll. 15 pounds. I just love her. I named her Penny Lane.

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never seen tufts on the face, but their coats always change after they are spayed/neutered. White markings on a Ruby, especially on the chest, are quite common. It's not the best thing to have on a show dog, but I don't think it takes away at all from a family pet Cavalier.

    I'm so glad I got a Ruby! I never thought I'd be able to even afford any Cavalier. While we did get sort of scammed, not price wise, but hrt history was a pack of lies. She was used as a breed bitch for at least one litter. We consider her a rescue.
    There doesn't seem to be many funny, cute, adorable videos of the Rubies (Chocolate) so I'm going to make a few! 6:28

    I'm wondering where you got that shirt from, I love it!

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The shirt is kind of a collector's item. A long-time Cavalier breeder/judge friend of mine had worked as a graphic designer. She designed the shirt, had a bunch produced, and she sold them at our Cavalier Club specialty shows. I managed to snag two of them, and I still wear them, despite the fact that they are really showing signs of age. By the way, she is from Texas, so the "Wanted" design is very appropriate.

    @SanphireJaide7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Beautiful - thankyou. My ruby boy has very curly hair on his ears and he's ultra-lively, especially around other people. Are these two traits common, or rare with rubies? His ears are also a bit shorter than those of most cavvies.

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  ปีที่แล้ว

      The feathering on the ears is normally straight and silky. The two most common causes of curly coat on the ears (and other areas) are from clipping the coat short, causing it to grow back curly, and from the change in hormones after neutering, especially if it is done too early.

    my ruby puppy is a light ginger colour. does that usually darken in an adult?

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes - Ruby pups are normally pale compared to adults. Give her some time, and feed her a good diet with ingredients such as Omega Fatty Acids that promote coat quality.

      @@chaskat35 Will do thank you! Does shaving a cavalier coat good or bad for the coat colour and texture? I know with some breeds it is a big nono to shave them.

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would strongly discourage shaving a Cavalier down. It almost always grows back with a different texture, often curly and difficult to brush/comb. Use a slicker brush to remove dead hair, but leave the undercoat intact. Also, the undercoat does NOT make the dog hotter in summer. Dogs don't cool themselves by perspiring through the skin as we do. They cool themselves primarily by panting. The undercoat actually helps to insulate dogs against both the cold winter and the hot summer.
      For information on the slicker brush, see my video on how to bathe and groom: th-cam.com/video/08Rw_PGLw6I/w-d-xo.html

    Is there any correlation between the Cav's colors and other characteristics?

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  ปีที่แล้ว

      Some people think so, but I don't subscribe to the theory. It probably comes from the fact that a lot of breeders keep their ruby/black-and-tan and blenheim/tricolor lines separate, so that the other characteristics stay separated. I've done plenty of cross-color breedings, and I don't see any difference in other characteristics between the colors.

  • @boogoodie
    @boogoodie ปีที่แล้ว

    As much as I love your beautiful ruby girl, I really didn't like the man handling of her. I get it that, as a show cavalier, she is very deeply scrutinised ., but I could see how uncomfortable she was. I've had 4cavvys and currently have 2. I may be a bit sensitive, but please don't poke at her that way. Cavaliers are sensitive little dogs and she looked way too uncomfortable.

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm afraid I can't agree with your assessment. She may have been a tad apprehensive, because she was quite young when that video was made, but the human contact is part of the socialization process. You will notice that I was gently stroking her neck and back during the entire video - that gives her positive feedback about contact with people. Show dog or pet dog, they have to be accustomed to human contact. At no time was she manhandled, poked at, or subjected to discomfort. I would never dream of doing that to any of the dozens of Cavaliers I have lived with.

    Our ruby Timmy looks a lot like Bella. He is the most vocal cavalier I’ve ever had. I’ve been told that’s down to his “ruby temperament”. @chaskat35 Is there any truth in this?

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I know it's a popular belief among Cavalier people, but I don't personally subscribe to it ... at least as far as the temperament being determined by color is concerned. There could be lines of rubies with similar temperaments, but I believe that it's their general genetic relationship that causes it, not their color.
