I moved to Nottingham so getting to the peak district is about 55 mins and ladybower 1hr 13. Such a great place to visit. Busy at weekends though. I agree the public transport is terrible in the peak district. Such nice roads to drive on.

I had a Passat high line estate of the same era in the same colour and it was hands down the most comfortable car I’ve ever owned. It was a pd130 and had 170k on the clock and a ridiculously good service history. It was comfy, huge inside, everything worked and I only have £900 for it! Good piece of advice for young drivers is diesel. You get a low tax cost. Good mileage insurance is always cheaper and pretty much every diesel has a turbo these days. Soo its a win win for everyone.

Not only has it the Top Gear vibes we were all longing for - like so many others mentioned. Rather it is nice to see you guys buying and using cars basically any of us can buy as well. I totally get the excitement and emotions of super and hyper cars, but too few are actually able to buy them, so it always seemed somewhat pointless to me having well-earning presenters test cars I won't be able to afford, only to point out the pros, cons and differences I won't experience anyway. I love these old Top Gear style challenges they are my favourite content from the channel. Alex you may have lost but I'd say Percy claims a moral victory as on principal of car Vs public transport it would have won. Also public transport failed Jack and Ethan resulting in a "no option but Uber".
In Poland on most trains if you have a ticket for train that you should be able to connect to, you can talk to the conductor, and if your train is late, the next train will be waiting for you. So Ethan and Jack would have some more chances to not miss their second train.
This is cool, my first ever road trip on a motorcycle (125cc because I'm a fool) was from Southwark to Castleton in the Peak District so this is a bit nostalgic for me.
You can share taxis with other people... seen it before at bus stops when they're late and in Town when people are off home (that don't know eachother)...

Easy! Exeter to Hastings it takes 8 to 9 hours on the train. I can drive it in 6.5 hrs including a 30 minute break! Drove it in 5:30 once, but I've mostly quit breaking the law these days.

As a resident of sheffield for my full 22 years of life. I can confirm the buses are horrific. But they’re right with snake pass being one of the best driving roads, especially to clear your head
My passat 1.9 tdi 55 plate had 273k on it when i sold it. Loved it for mpg wise 50+ easy in a 5 speed manual. Love the vid great choice but yeah whole suspension on mine got changed haha fun job and it was lowered after a spring snapped we changed them all for under 90quid on amax springs lol

This is a wonderful video, thank you for the great videos. They remind me of Clarkson, Hammond, May Top Gear. Also, Alex should be the winner, since a taxi is hired for private use, so Ethan and Jack technically cheated. If it was allowed, they could have hired a cab at the beginning of the race and took it to the end. That was not allowed, so the use of the taxi should not be allowed.
I'm always so tempted to pay this kind of money for a car and hope I get a good one but it's just such a big punt and I can't afford to lose the money. Do it. I've bought loads of £500 cars and just bought a £2600 car. My £2600 car has had more hassle than my £500 cars as you can just scrap em if they go wrong.
Just some random info about Percy’s registration. With the last letters BL that means the car would of been registered in the Bracknell Area, So that covers Reading, It probably lived on the M4 for most of its life.

you managed to find the only version of the B5 Passat that is worth owning. diesel manual. it gets rid of all of the major issues that plagued that platform. the 1.8T and V6 were very high maintenance engines, the automatic was absolutely terrible. so many of those ended up in the wreckers for those items. Percy is a solid old car.

A cab would've been different because, while you can request them through apps and so on, most of the times you'll just flag them down. For next challenge, I feel like there should be a rule about cars, meaning, if they need to get a cab, it has to be as a last resource (like they did), for the last section of the challenge, but they have to find it on the street and flag them down, no apps

The one I had in an Audi wasnt. It blew a turbo and then decided the oil should be on the road instead of the engine.

As a resident of sheffield for my full 22 years of life. I can confirm the buses are horrific. But they’re right with snake pass being one of the best driving roads, especially to clear your head
My passat 1.9 tdi 55 plate had 273k on it when i sold it. Loved it for mpg wise 50+ easy in a 5 speed manual. Love the vid great choice but yeah whole suspension on mine got changed haha fun job and it was lowered after a spring snapped we changed them all for under 90quid on amax springs lol
Video idea - High mileage restoration. £500 to buy a 200k+ car £500 to restore it and drive 500 miles. Whoever sells it for the most wins.
Definitely either do another "trade up" series with the Passat or keep it and just absolutely rice the shit out of it

This is a wonderful video, thank you for the great videos. They remind me of Clarkson, Hammond, May Top Gear. Also, Alex should be the winner, since a taxi is hired for private use, so Ethan and Jack technically cheated. If it was allowed, they could have hired a cab at the beginning of the race and took it to the end. That was not allowed, so the use of the taxi should not be allowed.
I'm always so tempted to pay this kind of money for a car and hope I get a good one but it's just such a big punt and I can't afford to lose the money. I have an old shitbox for a car and it is on its last legs (needs a full new clutch amongst other bits and pieces and is 26 years old) so this video is making the temptation huge because I love seeing when it works out. Do it. I've bought loads of £500 cars and just bought a £2600 car. My £2600 car has had more hassle than my £500 cars as you can just scrap em if they go wrong.

you managed to find the only version of the B5 Passat that is worth owning. diesel manual. it gets rid of all of the major issues that plagued that platform. the 1.8T and V6 were very high maintenance engines, the automatic was absolutely terrible. so many of those ended up in the wreckers for those items. Percy is a solid old car.

Alex is the real winner here... Not only because he got Percy out of it (will love seeing the journey you take that Passat through) but also because I don't consider Uber & co public transportation. A cab would've been different because, while you can request them through apps and so on, most of the times you'll just flag them down. For next challenge, I feel like there should be a rule about cars, meaning, if they need to get a cab, it has to be as a last resource (like they did), for the last section of the challenge, but they have to find it on the street and flag them down, no apps
