Alex shuffling papers gives me big Half In The Bag energy when Mike has notes on why a movie sucks or is awesome and literally writes like two sentences on the matter
Bear bear boys, sorry for the rant but I felt compelled to chime in on the Twitter reaction to the IHE/YMS "Trap" video: To me, the whole thing really just feels like a reaction to the thumbnail, channel branding, and loosely related discourse surrounding TH-cam criticism in general. I find it incredibly ironic that the argument against online critics is often that they give nothing but inflammatory, surface level, reaction-bait takes that don't engage at all with the context of the art being discussed. Yet in return, because of social media conditioning, the only thing people know how to do is throw the same inflammatory, surface level, and contextless takes back at said critics. It's something that's really disheartened me from even attempting to engage with the cultural conversations surrounding online criticism anymore, despite how much they fascinate me and how much I think everyone stands to learn from them. While there's always been a divide between critics and audiences, on the internet it feels more like a chasm. One that no one wants to acknowledge, outside of being unreasonably angry that the chasm exists. Or, maybe more accurately, a chasm that can never be truly acknowledged in any meaningful way. Because the social media sites we're using to have these discussions aren't designed to support productive conversations or bridge the social gaps they promised to. They're designed to boil everything down to their essence, and then fuel endless outrage over everything that gets chewn up and spat out. I know that's not really news to anyone reading this. Yet here we all are, still, despite that fact. I'm glad you've managed to find humor in the bad faith noise, Alex. I haven't managed to find that resilience yet, unfortunately. TL;DR the Trap video sucked. Didn't even watch it. I hope every TH-cam critic gets put into a Jordan Peterson-esque milking machine.
i find it very frustrating too. like when i go onto letterboxd, i see any criticism of a popular film get a ton of comments saying “bro cant have fun”. i think the position about caring or thinking deeply about something is made fun of a lot as everyone has this very fake “i have to be cool and not care” attitude on constantly
0:55 I swore Alex was going to say Puss In Boots: The Last Wish. Unironically one of the best representations of a panic attack and how to be there for someone who's going through it.
Mr Brightside annoys me because I remember when it came out and it was just another dime-a-dozen radio rock song, then 10-15 years later kids dug it back up and said "Oh my god, remember this gem from your time?" like it was our Comfortably Numb or something, and not just part of an amorphous blob with Kings of Leon, Kaiser Chefs, Rogue Traders and Good Charlotte.
On the topic of milk, as an American living in a somewhat rural area, we are instilled since about age 6 to begin carrying around a tiny cow in our backpacks to school so that we may be able to replenish our need for that fatty goodness whenever possible. Straight from the udder, as you WILL find if you venture into the Deep South, is truly the ONLY way to consume milk. You haven’t had MILK until you get your first tiny cow. Hope this clears things up!
Bare bear boys. I've noticed that film criticism, or any criticism really, makes people irrationally angry. I once told a boomer coworker that I watch film critics on TH-cam and the first thing he said was "I fucking hate Roger Ebert." I don't believe for a second that anyone gives a shit about Trap. They just want to hate critics. It makes me feel bad for you guys, especially Adum. Any rational person will tell you that not being able to finish a movie is a valid criticism, but because they hate Adum, they instantly go rabid. It's gross and I wish people were better but they're not so it's whatever I guess. Love you boys :) P.S. I miss James and hope he is well.
In regards to the arctic monkeys suggestion, I think their album Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino is their best. The 70s lounge/space pop aesthetic is so cool to me and it's honestly a very unique album. The lyrics are so strange and out there, a total amalgam of SciFi and pop culture that paints a totally surreal world for the sound to exist in. Give it a chance! I know it's underrated as hell for not sounding like a lot of their other stuff/being kinda silly
i remember once i commented after the nostaliga critic vids that brought everybody here, that the videos were not keeping my attention. i was told by a random viewer to "move along" like it was their secret club, so i have remained subbed ever since
I’m an American JARling with a very French surname and I find the French slander to be hilarious! Would love to hear my name read aloud in that offensive French accent!
I really appreciate your talk about not knowing your direction. I'm currently at uni and constantly fighting the desire to trop out. I used to do very well at school and pretty good at sixth form so thought I had a path in my mind ready but coming to uni has made me doubt this and I've been feeling very precarious. it's reassuring to know that there's still time to create a path and that this precariousness is inevitable. thanks so much boys bb kbk
I actually witnessed the tweets about you and YMS in real time when it happened, and it’s just kind of interesting how much people give a shit on twitter. There’s a lot of idiocy on twitter and it’s so easy to tune it out but people just refuse to and constantly engage with stuff/people they hate
Twitter is designed to show you the most amount of rage bait humanly until it breaks your will and you engage or delete it, for me seeing pisser dick would be enough to go on blood thirsty rampage…
the idea that someone may have differing thoughts to theirs is such a foreign idea to those people that they just lash out like it's some primitive holdover instinct instead of just accepting the outrageous idea that people might have different tastes to yours. that's why im not really surprised anymore that announcing that you're not interested in hearing about someone else's opinion because you're the one with good taste, actually, is able to take some group on twitter by storm and brew up an even uglier downpour.
on alex not being able to read… i am lucky enough to have had some of my comments read and alex always goes: “george erin-hand” or “george errenharnd” it’s not the easiest last name to read in the world, but it is the exact same as the overwatch character, just pronounced rein-heart (d is silent) don’t want to criticize you alex, just thought it was an example, don’t worry none of us jarlings can read either. bear bear !
Never thought of Alex as pretentious. You start nearly every IHE video with the big warning that it's just your opinion. When I hear "pretentious movie critic", I can only think of some channel that had multiple 4 hour long videos on The Force Awakens, and in the first video was trying to explain so hard that "at a certain point an opinion becomes factual" or some bs. In all of your time on the internet, you've never acted like anything was more than just your own thoughts. These people (if they're even people) are a little bananas lol.
American Schools push milk on kids to an absurd extent. The famous Got Milk? propaganda campaign is a staple of American Childhoods in the 90's and 00's and has its roots in 50's lifestyle propaganda. My dad especially bought into the milk hype. As a kid it was milk with every meal, including spaghetti many times These days, young american adults arent drinking a glass of milk each day, but Alex is correct that everyone has at least some memory of doing so
Of course Alex would answer the Sonic question, we all know he's secretly a huge fan and just refuses to admit it. Anyway, resident JAR Sonic expert (and Unreal Engine LEGO movie lighting guy) here to explain a few things. - Sonic is from Earth, just a stylised Earth. There are humans in cities, but also all the weird checkerboard loop-de-loops out on the more animal-inhabited islands. The planet "Mobius" is from the American localization in the 90's. Sonic X and the movies also depict Sonic and friends as aliens, but in the games, Sonic has always been on Earth. These American changes were also where the idea of Sonic being cocky and radical comes from, because the original Japanese vision for the character was a lot less annoying. Eggman was changed to "Robotnik" in the West, but he was always Eggman in Japan, too. I'd be interested to see how much of Alex's view of Sonic is from the awful Western adaptations. The original Japanese version of Sonic X was supervised very closely by Sonic Team and has the best depiction of Sonic outside of the original games - he's rather quiet and introverted, doesn't make lots of jokes, and is usually travelling the world to help people or pick some flowers. Basically a metaphor for the wind itself. Very different from the snarky "gotta go fast" junk that I'm sure Alex is used to. - Bark the Polar Bear is a character that already exists from Sonic the Fighters. There is also a green duck/woodpecker called Bean the Dynamite, but I assume Jim was referring to Jet the Hawk from Sonic Riders. - There is also a plant character already, Cosmo from the last season of Sonic X. Spoilers: Tails falls in love with her and shoots her with a giant gun powered by Super Sonic and Super Shadow to kill her. - There are no ape characters in Sonic, unless you count the Archie comics, but none of that is relevant to the games. I think that's all. Sonic is a horribly mismanaged series so I don't blame anyone for being confused. Also the movies suck, but so do a lot of the games.
I think the whole twitter thing is best summed up with the “when the random e-celebrity I hate for being annoying actually does something bad🙏” meme. A lot of people dislike Alex and Adum solely because they find you annoying and use every instance of critique against you to jump on the bandwagon. the “reasons” they have for disliking you are made up justifications, which is clear in how most of them obviously don’t really know your content. I personally find Adum‘s content kind of annoying because I heavily disagree with like most of his takes, but I don’t think that makes him a bad person lol, he seems like a good person
You joke about an American drinking milk with spaghetti Bolognese, but my stepfather's father has done exactly that. He drinks milk with just about every meal. Not every American does this; these days I feel like its more uncommon. My mom and her family used to be like this as well, with my grandmother still drinking milk regularly with meals that aren't usually drank with milk. As for why, in the case of my mother it was due to poverty, things like juice were considered a luxury to them; while with my stepfather's father its more a cultural thing due to him a boomer. Besides this milk has been pushed constantly to American's across several generations due to government subsidiaries and push from the dairy lobby. Ask any American about the "got milk?" campaign and they'll probably know what it is due to advertisements that were on TV, magazines, billboards, and the walls of their schools. That campaign ran from the 90's to the 2010's and got brought back a few years ago though I haven't seen it anywhere near as much since, but that might be due to me not being school aged anymore and not really seeing ads as much these days.
To be fair as you get older you tend to play less long games. Plus as Jamie said if you try to appeal to everyone the less enjoyable your final product.
On the topic of extraction shooters not taking off, I think the genre lacks mass appeal due to certain design features/problems inherent to the genre that relegate it to being a niche. Namely the issue of balancing better and worse gear between players in a PVP setting and the frustration of losing progress when you die. Tarkov fixes the former by being hyper lethal, where you die in 1-3 shoots, which already instantly makes the game unenjoyable for a more casual audience. I personally really don't like YMS ngl besides him being kinda suspicious he's just annoying and Grading to me. i stop watching the movie podcast you guys do together because of it haha I don't know it might be because he isn't also English so whenever he's pretentious about something it's just cringey to me, so yeah i can see why there's more hate for him online more then you , I guess the the silver lining is unlike most of his haters I just sit back say nothing and don't consume his content
Ce que les amateurs de haricots cuits ne comprendront jamais, c'est que tous les Français n'aiment pas les mollusques. Personnellement, je suis très offensé en ce moment. 😡 🇫🇷 🐌 🧅
I heard Alex mention shoegaze on Sardonicast and hearing your discussions on music very much piqued my interest. I felt the need to share my absolute favorite bands of the genre. Modern Color and Sweet Pill are the best examples of shoegaze while incorporating pop-y elements. I discovered them and the genre in general last year and they changed my life. I’m mostly a metal guy, so the serene and heartfelt songwriting was a complete breath of fresh air and blew me away. I heavily recommend both they’re fairly new and deserve the attention.

Other games like The Cycle which don't have the same level of lethality struggle with balance as players who have more hours and better gear end up stomping new players with little chance for them to fight back.
The latter is an endemic issue IMO. I've never seen a successful mainstream game where you lose hours or days of progress when you die. I could be wrong but I'll believe it when I see it.
