My god, who would have thought a NAT/ACT/NZF govt rep would be giving this speech in the birthplace of Labour. It shows you the NZ Labour party has lost it soul, direction and morals. Well done SJ and govt, keep your foot on the gas pedal.

@charlesh3492 Exactly right. I'm from Westport originally and 84yo tomorrow and have voted Labour all my life. Sadly, Labour is not the Labour party of yesteryear and their ideology has changed, beginning when Ardern took over the reins and it has now turned into something else. My loyalty has been severely challenged. Bob LH.

In a few weeks time I will travel to Australia with my son and leave him with my best mate to start his new life. I have very mixed emotions about it. The alternative for him is he follows the path of his good mate wanting to be an industrial electrician. He has been working this year for free believe it or not. In the promise he will have an apprenticeship next year. WTF!! As kiwi's do we think that is fair? I hope you succeed Shane as you are the only hope I have that my family will some day be reunited.

Mining only works when done like in Norway - the Australian model that we try to follow shows that only a few make the big money and it mostly goes overseas.
Shane is being shortsighted and tries to appeal to his followers (1% of the population)
Tourism brings in over 37 billion dollars per year.
Farming, forestry and fishery brings in 12.5 billion a year and destroys what the tourists come for.
What will mining bring and what will it cost us?

Buy shares in Santana minerals who discovered all the gold recently. Currently Aussie $1.025 or $1.12 NZ, they will be cranking 14000 oz gold pa starting 2027 and lasting 10 to 13 years. "The analyst consensus target price for shares in Santana Minerals is AU$2.40 or $2.63NZ. There you go. Now you can be one of those shortsighted people who make a lot of money and you dont need to think about Norway any more. Come on Govt, let nothing stand in the way of me and other Kiwis making some retirement money off all this gold.

Have you seen the land the new gold mine will be on? its freaking desolate, above the clouds in places, somewhere no one ever goes, high country sheep farming land, you know what that means, huge area and low grade land and few stock. Its basically worthless left as it is, and in the scheme of things, it is a 30km stretch of land, in the middle of nowhere in a tiny country at the bottom of the world that is so isolated less than a zillionth of the world population would ever go there. What's the problem. Its shit land of no value, has fk all wildlife, and as you all well know, NZ doesn't have natural 4 legged creatures, only birds so who is it hurting?, there are fk all birds up there. Its just sitting there, Dig the fker up and lets get some money turning over.

@@jasonpoihegatama1347 The supermarkets made nowhere near 6b profit last year. In fact, their profit margins are very low which is why other supermarkets won’t compete here. Like I said, capital investment requires economic incentive, but the pie is too small here. The juice isn’t worth the squeeze.
The idea that supermarkets are fleecing us is a repeated media narrative(read: lie) that has no basis in reality and defies common sense. If they are making money hand over fist then why aren’t others getting in on the lolly scramble?
Also, having the government run businesses is a terrible idea. I wouldn’t trust the government to run a bath let alone a supermarket.
