Nice job! You brought this bike back, and will get another 40 years out of it. I have an '83 which needs new valve seals. This bike is a very capable dual sport and does well both in dirt and on the street.

There's a place in York called Fabrion that can fix the seat corners if you ever choose to do that. They did lots of vinyl repair and seat repair for the garage where I worked. Very reasonable.

Hey wonkster! Awesome job on a very cool bike . My story is similar ( down to the DC plastics and valves ) . I have a question for you .... Did you have an extremely difficult time with the air box to carb boots having hardened an having shrunk overtime? I did the soak with alcohol and wintergreen oil extract trick to soften the rubber boots but they still seem a little short... I I find this frustrating to the point of almost wanting to start throwing tools but that I calm down and watch TH-cam videos on XL 600s LOL LOL

I used a heat gun to make the boots softer. I did crack one but it's in a spot that doesn't cause a problem. I tried softening them but didn't have a success. I recently found these on eBay. I'm tempted to try them. Thanks for watching. www.ebay.com/itm/403685301622?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=cijhosZ-TIi&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=m9XUPI3RQxy&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

@@wonkster1970 one other question .... Is your front brake working adequately? The guy I bought the bike from must have had an insane amount of problems I found the packages for two caliper rebuild kits three set of front brake pads and he claims he could never get it working right no matter what he did.... I put seals in the caliper but I don't really see anything wrong with the assembly... I'm not trying to be a pest ,it's just you're one of the few guys that is one is in-depth as I've been forced to do myself !gets expensive pretty quick!

@@papimiami1938 The front brake on my bike works great. I had to replace both the pistons. I think that I got my kit from all Balls Racing. I think the pistons I got were oem. Let me know if you have any other questions. I don't mind.

How are the pistons in the caliper? can you push them in by hand? They shouldn't be too hard to push back in. Mine were stuck when I got the bike. That seems to be common with bikes that set for a while.

@@wonkster1970 I just ordered new ones ..... From Honda . I bought the exact same rebuild kit from All balls racing LOL LOL.. I had to use compressed air to get the Pistons out and there was some pitting but I said the hell with it (at that time) now I have reconsidered. I've never actually ridden the bike yet. My bike originally came from the southwest and had a highly modified air box all that silica sand is why I had to do piston rings and valves. It is truly been a labor of love, I was riding a 1982 Honda xl 80 when that bike was new . The 600 was the bike I always WANTED when I was young . Well that... and a CR 500, but I am not interested in a open class MX bike at 45 years of age !

How much do you figure this cost you?

I figure it was about 2k in parts. I did most of the labor.
