  • Imagine you’re in the waning hours of your life. Maybe you’re old and the biological clock is tired of ticking. Maybe you have a terminal illness and you know the end is near.
You have your family members with you trying to support you as best they can. You’re reflecting on the live you’ve lived. You’ve been alive long enough to be considered to have had enough time on this earth - maybe 80 years old.
Yet, for some reason, you feel like the time was wasted. You wish you could have done more... been more.

You can have a job and still follow your dreams. I love writing too but I have a regular job. I just don't waste my off time feeling sorry for myself and being bored.

I like the way the author of this video noted that his writing doesn't cost anything; that he can do it anytime; and that it gives him great satisfaction... "The gentleman takes recreation in the arts" - a good piece of related advice from Confucius.

Right. And what if I threw caution to the wind and tried to start a new business, and I bankrupted myself, couldn't feed myself, and didn't conveniently die?
Thinking about the possibility that today could be my last is fine. But this should be balanced by the thought that you might still have a long life ahead where you'll have 20 or more years to live with the consequences of your choices.

Baruch Ben-David Ya dingus.... he never said disregard what you are bringing up, he only said consider your viewpoint from when you are older and looking back on your life. Your points are vaild, but don't actually disprove or take away from the points made in the video. That said, thank you for pointing out the obvious to those who need it pointed out for them lol. Idk I think I spent too much time writing this

Starting a business doesn't mean throwing caution to the wind. In reality it's the opposite, taking calculated risks even if you fail is not the same as being wreckless or irresponsible.

Damn right about the part about your last time being alive. Trust me, I was on my bus on my way to school on Friday and got into a bad car accident on a bridge which was prob a 80ft drop. I thought that the person we hit died or what if my bus went off the bridge.

But with the knowledge that we take nothing with us and that we all die anyway no matter what you didn’t do, would it matter anyway? The moment you stop breathing, the regret ends I’m sure. But regret sucks anyway.

Writing sounds great. But you still have to pay the mortgage, you still need a retirement income. A lot of this is well intended, but too idealistic. For the vast majority of people, earning a living from writing just isn't feasible, even less so if you want to life a great lifestyle at the same time. "Live in the moment" philosophy isn't beneficial long term and is one reason why people are saving less and less, and racking up debt. That 7%/year saving plan may give your kids/grand kids a better life!

Great to venture out try things when young... i did too but if your not on track with savings /pension /RSP with an actual retirement date by 35 you have a 90% chance of working till your deathbed.I spent 15 yrs as an Artist another 15 trading stocks but my Day job got me to retirement and I thank my lucky stars daily I hung in there.

I am sure there are those who follow their passion and wish "I should have been more pragmatic ". It is just unlikely they get to live until 80 years old.

Maybe you live in a different reality, but in a third world country being finacially secure when you are old can be a life or death situation, since health treatment is expensive.

Sometimes I think of trying writing too. I used to be enthusiastic about being able to understand myself or other issues in a very accurate, logical, authentic, clear, and even creative way, and I hope to bond with others by practicing this, but I couldn't find audience or just people who care. This loneliness and emptiness make me feel that I am worthless to develop what I like.
