I was a big church kid back in the day but it still took several minutes for me to realize she was not demanding intestinal health from Jesus Stripes.

After seeing the tiktok caption say "stripes", I rewound to listen and I definitely didn't hear some of the key sounds from "Christ", especially a lack of a T sound at the end. The "cr" sound at the start was also missing, but that could be dialect / accent thing? It definitely sounded like "stripes"
So is "by Jesus's stripes" a phrase with some meaning, like a reference to another thing folks of that part of Christianity like to say or believe in?

@@butt.whytho Jesus's "stripes" refers to the wounds inflicted on his back while getting whipped right before he was crucified. So, people who say, "By his stripes you are healed!" They mean that they believe that Jesus getting tortured almost 2000 years ago somehow heals people in the present or something like that. Sort of like, Jesus suffered so you won't have to. Also, have you ever heard the old-timey slang word "Zounds!"? It comes from the phrase "God's wounds" and means the same thing as "Jesus's stripes".

When she said Jesus stripes, she is referring to a verse in the Bible that says, "by His stripes we are healed" Isaiah 53:5. Making fun of peoples religious beliefs is not cool

It's weird that we take it as given that this prophecy about a messianic martyr saving Israel from Assyrian occupation was primarily referring to a more metaphysical salvation that came along after everyone he was addressing was dead, during a much later Roman occupation. But that looks totally cool and reasonable compared to then assuming that salvation is also about treating your Celiac's disease over TikTok.
Isaiah was writen around 700 BCE, so the only way it references Jesus is if you retroactively conceive the suffering servant as Jesus
