I discovered this *small microcontroller development board* on Banggood (link below, available elsewhere too, eg Amazon, AlieXpress) and was impressed at how easy it was to use as well as being so very useful.
So useful, in fact, that *I bought another**, removed the ATTiny13 chip and **soldered on an ATTiny85* chip in its place! Fantastic!
Now, instead of having to get out a breadboard and struggle to get various components placed on it with umpteen DuPont cables I just whip out this board and **start uploading code immediately**.

I was discharged by the consultant at the hospital yesterday, Flemming, my pneumonia has gone! Just a couple of blood tests for my liver to go. Trying to get my eye sorted out privately now, it seems everyone else has had the same idea. Ho hum.
Don't worry my friend, we have all turned on notifications by ringing the bell. You can't hide.
Take care of yourself! Don't over stress your eyes(either the good or the bad). It's not worth it. Besides we have to stick around, you have us as your extended TH-cam family. You can't get rid of family, no matter how hard you try sometimes. Besides your the good part of our extended family we want to keep you Ralph!
I still like the idea of your board, because it was so easy to take the tiny## out after we were done shook we could add it to our projects. Keep healthy, don't worry about your loyal audience, and fine someone to pamper you(good luck with the last one).

Yes, they are nice chips, Tom. I might get an ATTiny84 (more pins) soon and ensure it runs as expected (ie like an ATTiny85).
Hello Ralph, I'm pleased to get any content from you, but if you'd like a suggestion for vids to make without close in work?
I still class myself pretty much as beginner, I understand what the various components are and what they do but I don't really know how the various components were picked, I just follow instructions e.g. I can understand why a certain capacitance was used when it is being used as a timer or as a filter but beyond that I have no clue. I know the difference between NPN and PNP transistors but not the differences between the various PNP (or NPN) transistors, so I would welcome vids that discussed these choices and how the decision to use one over another was made.
Good suggestions, Snafu, and aligns well with my declared aim of getting beginners up to speed. I shall most definitely bear this in mind, thanks for the idea (which I will now claim all as my own!!!).
Another excellent video. I’m yet to use an ATtiny but I do have plans for an led project with one. The board will make life easier in the prototype phase, as you said.
Hopefully all appointment will be rescheduled in the not to distant future.
I'm afraid the appointments have no resume date, I'd be surprised if I get it seen to this year now. But in the meantime do play with this board (or the other one on Aliexpress that has a DIP socket. I've one on order to see if it's the same.

The t13 and t85 are both available in .15" wide JEDEC SOIC and .208" wide EIAJ
packages. The part numbers ending in SU are the bigger EIAJ version, and SSU is for the smaller SOIC. (see the "Ordering Information" section of the datasheet)
The part numbers are so confusing, Ralph. I tried to get the wider bodied ATTiny13 from both LCSC and RS Components with no luck. Then I got confused over the SU vs SSU sizes.
Hence why my Stop/Start/Kill PCB got the narrow bodied ATTiny13 outline, which is tight squeeze for the ATTiny85 (as you saw in the video) but it is very doable. I will have a look around for the SU ATTiny13s, thanks for the explanation (I knew you would know).

I have one of those flip up/down sets and they worked for a while but no longer, my vision is not good enough. But several fires are in the iron, so stay tuned!
I bought a 'stick' of ATTiny13s years ago, without knowing their very modest capabilities. They were only about 20c each though, so why not!
Eventually, I managed to make use of some of them as a hardware watchdog, running alongside various ESP8266 projects. I couldn't do what I wanted using pure Arduino code, so I had to do some googling and write it in assembly language. Obviously, a slightly 'bigger' chip is still cheap, but there's a lot of satisfaction that comes with making something out of almost nothing. :-)
And if you were working in a commercial environment, your boss could well insist on using the cheaper ATTiny13 to save those 5 cents on each chip! When you're producing hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of products it can really add up!

I have a couple of these little blue dev boards myself but mine have 12F675 PIC microcontrollers on them. Yes, I'm a glutton for punishment and occasionally I play with the PIC instead of AVR. As for your situation just stick to what you can do whenever you can do it. We fully understand. The world has decided to go mad for the time being and we're all having to endure changes to our normal routines - even those of us who really hate change.
Did you replace the ATTiny13 chip with a PIC chip or did they come like that? As you know, I used to play with PICs too (see www.sfcompiler.co.uk/wiki/pmwiki.php?n=SwordfishUser.Articles, first two articles) but I find the Arduino (and related) chips much better supported (or perhaps I just like them better!). Stay tuned, Nick, I have some video ideas now.
@@RalphBacon They came with the PIC and as 8 pin DIL (socketed) and not the surface mount variety so I can replace them with either a 12F629 or a 12F683 if I so wish. Like this i.ebayimg.com/images/g/iDQAAOSw44BYLVjt/s-l640.jpg I usually code for them using Great Cow BASIC as PIC assembler is a pain, all that bank switching nonsense!
I doubt you can use an USB-to-serial converter to program the tiny (unless you use some software bitbanging upload protocol, that's highly dependent on the converter chip used). The USPASP "speaks" the native programing protocol of AVRs, USB-to-serial converters need the Arduino bootloader.
Btw. it's well worth getting multiple of the USBASPs including the adapter. You can use one to update the firmware on another (it's just an AVR after all). And for some projects, where you don't have a 6- or 10-pin header on the board, but connect the programming wires one by one, it saves a lot of hassle when you can just leave one connected until the end of the project and not have to reconnect every time you programmed some other board in between.
Oh dear. You are correct. Without a *bootloader* it won't be possible to upload code with a standard FTDI USB-to-Serial device.
Most ATTiny85s don't have a bootloader pre-installed either, so you would have to install one using the ICSP method (which I've described many, many times!). I'm not even sure an ATTiny13 has enough room for a bootloader, let alone that and a sketch too.
Personally, I never use a bootloader on either of these chips, memory is too precious, and I upload using the ICSP pins (from an Arduino programmer or dedicated programmer).
My mini ATTiny13/85 breadboard friendly PCB with built in 6-pin header shows this quite clearly. Ho hum. Let's hope everyone gets a USBASP then! Thanks for alerting me to my faux pas.
Does this mean that the other adapters shown wouldn't work? Will the one shown work under linux, does anybody know? I'm bothered by it wanting to run its own software, there...

Glad that you are back in good health. The times, they are crazy and I feel your pain on non-essential surgeries/procedures being canceled. For us here in the Seattle area, it looks like May 18th is the tentative date that things might go back to normal but I'm not holding my breath. Do what you can, when you can, and we'll be here, most of us probably starving for any sort of outside stimulus to keep the brain cells healthy and functional.

Keep them comming as and when. Currently fighting with a 8 digit dispaly, which is part serial and part parallel. 8 digits, 7rows * 5 columns per digit. you need to shift in a complete 8 digit row, then cycle through the 5 columes. Arduino debugging with serial is throwing all sorts of delays in the serial data stream to the display. Even just having a serial.begin in the code buggers the timing. having to use a 8bit logic analyser to try and see whats going on. Your video was a nice break thanks.
Part serial, part parallel. How boring. Let's jazz it up a bit and have some parts updated OTA via bluetooth, some via WiFi (authenticated, obviously) and the rest by ESP. That's when you _really_ have a challenge!!! Good luck with that project, sounds like you won't be bored any time soon (even without the stuff I suggested).
@@RalphBacon Well got the display to work, now i got a new issue. The display draw an average current of 400mA's or so. So it's getting too hot to touch!! :( looks like i'm going to need a heatsink if i want to run them for more than a few min's. Who thought that they would need to so much power just to read them in sunlight. it was the reason that we never finished the project we were going to use them on. there must have been 20 or more displays and you needed gloves to press the button. Good in bright sunlight, but shit hot, the LCD;s we tried good in bright sunlight but stopped working when it got cold. happy days. Got an ESP32 maybe that need to be interface to it next to control the fans. :)
Thanks for keeping up the content Ralph, sorry to hear your treatment has been postponed. No worries if there is no or little content in the next few months, I think we all have other things to concentrate on at the moment anyway, and it's good to be able to go over some of your older videos for projects that I have been meaning to do for some time. Perhaps with more time at home I might even get around to doing some of them now!

In the latest version of this development board, the Attiny13 is inserted in a socket. You can easily exchange the Attiny13 for an Attiny85, if necessary.

Hey Ralph, Why don't you look for an intern to help you (for free)? Maybe a college student or high school (US term) student? You could offer some free mentoring since you have loads of practical experience - and it would look great on their resume.
I've got a feeling that no-one wants to be in that close a proximity with anyone else, right now, David, and my workshop is compact! But it's a great idea for when the restrictions get relaxed a bit. I shall bear in mind.

I too was excited about the attiny chips until I discovered stm8 microcontrollers. It's amazing what you can get for $1, you've got timers with any prescaler value, complementary outputs, deadtime, i2c, uart and even can. You should try them, atmega chips will seem childish compared to them.
You may have seen my STM32F103C videos, very capable. I've not used the STM8 chips, however, But watch the video when it comes out and you can compare!

Absolutely no worries about content, impressed you've carried on weekly this long! I'm subscribed and have that bell ticked so whenever you return I'll be back to watch.
In the interim, maybe there is scope for videos without code or demonstrations? Maybe something like a journey through the projects you've built and a discussion about which have stood the test of time and which ultimately same to nothing (we all have those!) or how you'd change them after using them for a while. Just talk and maybe the little whiteboard needed. Or possibly a walk through the list of projects you'd like to do if you had the time/resources. It's fascinating to hear what others have done and would like to do.
Er, slightly confused here, Gavin, you wrote "[projects] which ultimately same to nothing". I don't understand that sentence at all. I'm thinking of doing some short (10-15mins), basic videos for real beginners, on say Transistors, Capacitors and other components, Ohms Law etc. Might be useful. What say you?
@@RalphBacon Sorry the "same" was a typo. It should have read projects which "came" to nothing. Those black holes we sometimes go down that seem like a good idea at the time but end up being too difficult to make or too cumbersome to use or don't receive wife/husband/Benny approval.
Definitely with you on the idea of a basics series. It never ceases to amaze me on the forums and Reddit how many Arduinites have little or no understanding of electronics.

They came with the board, but of course can be used in other boards too. Jannie is correct, Nylon Standoffs sounds right. You can get push-in (like these), screw in and self-adhesive ones. I've only ever seen and used square feet ones but these are smaller, round feet, so maybe AliExpress might be a good place to search for them.

I also got several different varieties of standoff's from the same seller. This one:

...is similar to the one Ralph had here. They come in sizes ranging from 3mm to 18mm. This measurement is the distance between the first panel clip set and the second (where the board connects). I have the 5mm and 18mm sizes. The 5mm is good for separating a single sided through hole board from an enclosure surface. The 18mm is long enough to clear most small through hole components on both sides of a board. This is also a good way to line up flush mounted female Dupont headers on the bottom of a board, if you get the right size.
The seller also has some options that match the distance of a standard Dupont male/female stack, with end to end board clips. These are handy for projects that use a display module like the 1602's. IIRC I got the 13mm version of these:

I would love a development board for the tiny85 so much faph when trying to move chips from programmer to breadboard 😩. Not sure I would pay that tho 🤔 mite if I am in isolation for a long time.
If that happens I have 34,543 projects that mite get finished or attempted 😝.

Another great video. My eyes aren't what they used to be either. As others suggested, talk about when and why you would use various electronic parts. ALSO... I'm very interested in your Smart Charger. I manually keep trying to catch it at 85 to 90% charge, usually unsuccessful. If you have it ready, or at least almost ready PLEASE make a video. I've been holding off buying the BLE boards until you decide on which is best 05 or 06!
I hear you, Bill. My phone charger is doing great. Get both an HC06 and an HC05, they are cheap enough. HC05 gives you an additional feature (not essential but useful). Maybe I should do this next video... Anyway, yes, the videos of why/when/how we use various components could be done, and ideal for beginners. Hmmm, there is hope yet then!

I2C on the Tiny13 - did you see my video #82 on I2C and SPi on the ATTiny85? Would the same code work (fit into memory) on the ATTiny13? Also, check out Ralph Doncaster's GitHub/Website he has great ideas for the small chips.

I have an arduino Uno which i need to burn bootloader onto, How could i use an Attiny85 board (lilytiny attiny85) as master to do it?
I'm not sure how you would do it without looking into it in much more detail. Can you not use a Nano or another UNO to do this? Load up the ISP sketch onto that device and connect 4 wires plus power to the one you want to burn a bootloader to. Theoretically, the Tiny85 has enough pins but I'm not sure the the sketch to burn a bootloader to another device will run on it.
About the hospital appointment, mine too been cancelled, it is for my neurosurgery test on my memory. I will hang onto you too. My eyesight is getting worst as well, it just my age (almost same age as Julian...) .
I don't think Julian is _that_ old, early 60s maybe? Anyway, I'm disappointed for you, too, about the cancelled appointment. We can but wait now.

Be aware that most cheap 5V/3V selectable USB-UART converters only switch VCC, not logic levels. May be also the case for some programmers...
Yes, good point, always best to double check with a multimeter.
I recomend "Dark Reader" addon for the web browser. It is to have the dark mode on the web you visit. With the exception of some websites that already have them like TH-cam and some more.

SOS please help. Hello friends. I designed a program with my Arduino to run a 5 to 9v dc motor forward, stops and backwards for a few seconds. Then stops and waits for sensor again. The code was put into an IC ...the AtTiny85 to shrink the project. Here are the component's...9vdc battery, .i used a sensor to detect motion as input. Im using a LM7805 (100 nf electrolytic cap at input and 0.1 nf ceramic cap at output) regulator to reduce voltage to supply IC with 5vdc so it can go into program. The outputs of the program are .. light up an LED ( with a 200 omhs resistor) and start the motor by giving signal to small MX1616 Motor Driver. Also , during this operation, the system can be shut if a Microswitch is pressed. MY PROBLEM: the code, and this system works perfectly on breadboard. But when i solder it on card...it works for a few minutes and the motor starts spinning only fwd non stop AND ITS LIKE THE SYSTEM DOES NOT GO INTO PROGRAM FROM THE ATTINY85 or not enough current to start it. Everything (sensor, driver, motor) takes power from the 9v battery , only the AtTiny85 is supplied with regulated 5vdc but that input to the regulator also comes from 9v battery. Could my capacitors be the problem? Is 100 nf too much at that input and dissipates all the energy?? Should i also separate the grounds of the circuit. The 9vdc circuit and the AtTiny85 circuit SHARE the same grounds. Thank you
Are you sure your 9v battery is capable of supplying enough current for the entire project? It's not usual to do this (unless you 9v battery is huge).
@@RalphBacon Hi Ralph. Thanks for the reply. Yes it does enough current for the whole project. I restarted another soldered card and now works fine. I reduced my entry ceramic capacitor to 0.33uf as spécified in the LM7805 datasheet. I think my problem was a bad soldering connection..... on the IC or anything else. It was very hard to figure it out. But I did the mirror trick and bought a smaller soldering point...was careful on flux. Circuit is working fine now and goes into program. Question still remains... Is it ok to share different DC voltage grounds back to source? Or keep them separate?
All grounds, for all parts of the circuit, should be COMMON (or shared, as you put it). Known as a common ground. But the positive rails can (and should) be completely and entirely separated.

The new Arduino IDE is also built using Eclipse so it won't be too different from this.
@@RalphBacon Thanks for the prompt answer! Looks really functional to work in, especially when you have multiple things going at once. I've toyed with the Pro IDE but have found enough bugs to put me off at least for now. Wasn't happy with VSCode/Platform I/O and the Java issues with the standard IDE have left me stuck at 1.8.10, and even it is still buggy with High DPI displays. Love to know how it goes for you, and me thinks me gonna try it ...
It's what I have used for the past 3-4 years, Jef, so I guess I find it pretty good. Bit of a pain on one upgrade where every single project had to be manually updated but, hey, I now know more about Eclipse/Sloeber.
When you install it, and it goes without error, you are safe. It's when things go wrong that you wish you hadn't started it!
And, just to be clear, I don't offer any support because I don't advocate users using it unless they are confident (and competent) in fixing it themselves (or Googling the answer). Sounds harsh but I could do 6 videos on this and still not cover all bases! If you have a go, good luck!
I can't believe what this virus thing is doing to us, world wide. I hope the doom say'rs are wrong, but I fear they may be right. Being a relatively old fart, I worry for our future. Luck with your projects and I hope this virus dies off quickly so you can have your operation. My daughter must go for surgery on a torn ligament on Monday, she is worried about the whole trip since she must go to a distant city for the operation, and while there are no cases near us, there are up there. Thanks for the video's we need them to keep give us something to look forward to every week.
I wish your daughter good luck. She should confirm on the day, if possible, that it is still going ahead to avoid a wasted trip. Crazy times, Jerry, that's for sure. I mean, they are now rationing loo roll at our supermarkets, all the pubs (bars), clubs, gyms are closed. Where will it all end?

Hi Ralph they make one with an 8pin socket also.
I've just been reminded by Scott that this was the case, Walt, in his link (I missed that difference) and have one on order to see if an ATTiny85 can also fit into that socket.
I was wondering if it were possible to fit an 8-pin socket on that board so that you could just plug chips in...

Many have requested and suggested a beginners video series on how/why/when which I might do, as I now have a captive audience! What to you think, Andy? 15 mins *max* per video on a specific electronics/Arduino topic? Eg why do we need caps, transistors, protection diodes and so forth.
@@RalphBacon that sounds like a great idea Ralph, yeah " Bacon Bites " explanations on the basics, perhaps small snippets of code with little breadboard examples, as you say just quarter hour, maybe pick a module like an INA current module or perhaps the MAX6675 temp module and so on. There are loads of cheap modules out there to do or as you say transistors and caps, i think that would be very well received.
@@RalphBacon : Take a look at learnelectronics classic circuits. I have learned a lot from them and they are a good format. Or maybe a follow-along project where you do a short video on each stage and we build it as you go. We could then share our projects fails and successes.

Hello from Australia Ralph. Disappointing news about the op. I'm glad you are doing these videos on the ATtiny chip. I've been looking into better ways to program and debug them and came across UPDI (Unified Programming and Debugging Interface. This allows two way communication with a single USB dongle, and it will be neccessary if you want to use the newly released upgrade chips (www.technoblogy.com/show?2OCH). Also fould this nice USB programming stick (www.technoblogy.com/show?2OJT). I look forward to your feedback and hope to see a video or two on it.

When you can get a ardunio nano for a dollar why not just use that. This thing cost too much for what it is.Clip the pins or dont even use a pinned version and a nano is thin enough to go alot of places.
I can't get a Nano for $1! I can get the 328P (or even the 168) chip used in the Nano for less but not the full blown board, with USB-to-Serial converter and PCB and everything. Funnily enough, my fridge alarm (from whence this whole ATTiny13 topic stems) has been running on a Nano for some years (see videos #41/#42). The challenge for video #177 was whether I could replicate all the functionality in a Tiny13. And, then I found this development board which would have been ideal whilst I did that challenge (and still use it now) albeit with an ATTiny85! So that's the raison d'etre for this video and board!
As I understand it, getting a Nano to emulate any kind of HID is more painful. Keyboard.h is not compatible with atmega328p. It works with attiny and atmega32u4 tho.
