I remember reading that when the U.S. Navy ran fluorescent lamps on DC power on their ships, they would periodically swap the bulbs around to equalize the wear and prevent them from getting black at only one end.

Yep, that's right! Another reason for swapping them around is to offset the effects of mercury migration, which would cause one half of the lamp to become dim. I've read that the F14T12 was actually developed to run on DC power in streetcars. Their short length made them less susceptible to mercury migration, and made their arc voltage low enough to run on the 64V system that was used.

Yes, here we go....the one F40 on the far left of my fixture had the same dark spot and a bit of the broken cathode was just slightly glowing like yours, and yes, very hot. But it was still going, ten mins so far. It's unplugged...don't want to fry it just yet! lol

I had to check the images on the length bar of the video so I would know if there was a pooping sound I needed to brace myself for hearing. o-o LOL...?

***** Oh gee... I meant "popping" sound. O-O
      ___
I just realized I typed two letter o's instead of letter p's.
      I'm sorry about that...

Kegan It threw me off at first, but then I figured you meant that. XD
You've got nothing to worry about there; I've never heard of a fluorescent lamp exploding in any way when it burns out.

***** Well, it looks like two of your fluorescent bulbs have
"crapped out." LOL XD...um... o-o Haha

I sent some similar pics of my T12's to you, actually looking very similar to darker end. Did you get to see them?
