My flight instructor back in the mid 80s fit the profile of these pilots. Even though he was married, he chased women and was always up to no good. He was a fun guy to be with, though.
"The Metro 3 isn't exactly known for its luxury..." I've been on a few airliners and passenger aircraft over several decades, and the Metroliner is one I don't want to travel in again. It's cramped and claustrophobic and noisy.
I flew a metro by myself a lot, shooting 2d’s. The Lockhart river accident kept me on my toes the whole time. The aeroplane was capable of steep descents without much fuss, but we never forced it into that situation.
A buddy of mine was a airline pilot and was one of the reasons they started testingback in the 80s. He kept his job and never had any accidents. Iet him at a A.A meeting, he had like 20 years sober.
Airlines may say they drug test aircrew but in my airline we had random testing for the last 15 years prior to my retirement and I was NEVER tested and never heard of any company pilot being tested.
I’ve never seen or heard of any pilots getting randomly drug tested at the 2 airlines I’ve worked for either. I’ve only seen flight attendants getting randomly tested.
They definitely test pilots, the other employees aren’t tested because it’s not really important, and maybe they’re afraid some employees are weed users so they don’t want to have to fire them if they fail a drug test. They know weed isn’t likely to cause problems. Just an idea

Cocaine does not work like that, if the dude did some coca 24 hours before takeoff I would say the drug had nothing to do with this accident. the next morning he should be good to go if he got sleep. Now if he was snorting lines and flying I would be like WTF. or even a few hours later, but a day later if he was a good pilot then he would still be a good pilot. Just saying.
Had to look up what "chasing needles" means. Very interesting in case anyone else wants to know: "There is a common problem for pilots new to instrument flying. It occurs when the plane goes through some normal variance from straight-and-level flight, perhaps due to turbulence. The pilot notices this on the needles of the instruments and then immediately tries to course correct by moving the controls. The novice pilot will over-correct, sending the needle off in another direction. When this is repeated, they are said to be chasing the needle. An experienced pilot will relax, let the airplane self-correct (self-correction is part of properly designed airplanes), and then perhaps make a slight movement on the controls, if needed."
I was at a pretty wild party in a Hyatt Regency hotel room in the 90's, everyone present was extremely intoxicated from alcohol, to my horror at about 5.00am two guys had to leave (they were pilots, won't name the airline) as they had a 7 hour international flight to operate from the nearby airport!! 😱

The aviation problem was the lack of respect for a high rate of descent like that... which was needed at first, but they just let it go for an extra minute which was all it took to slam into the ground.

First thing my instructor asked was if I smoked, I said no, he explained it's cause you have difficulty breathing at higher atmospheric levels in any flight, so you can't have issues with lungs :) helped me never smoke even when I couldn't fly anymore

I’m curious as to what the blood levels of cocaine and cocaine metabolites were. If he was just partying the day before, I wouldn’t expect it to have anything to do with this assuming he got enough sleep. You can estimate when it was last used based on blood concentration, toxicologists have formulas for that kind of thing.

16:52 getting your instrument rating you wear goggles that are blocked out, allowing you to only see the instruments. This was one of my biggest fears. Ultimately it led me to checking the chart over and over, going over everything especially during any night flight or shitty weather! People see this part 16:52 hopefully they think what they will try to do, but in reality, there’s nothing you can do. As an instinct you’re going to pull back on the yoke as hard as you can.
The federal government has a strict responsibility or regulation for cdl drivers to, ironically decades ago, dispatch used to give speed to long haul drivers across country. Now you literally will ruin your career over banned substances and goveners will stop driving for mandatory rests. My instructor 11 years ago always said, you are driving a loaded weapon. This always stuck with me. I’m sure aviation safety is absolutely stricter

This is a very very 1980s story. I am not sure coke would hurt someones proformance..like all drugs they affect people differently but milk amounts of stimulants like coke have been shown to improve alertness, proformance, concentration etc. its quite the opposite for alcohol and other other depressents.
It doesn’t actually increase your abilities, it makes you think your abilities are exceeding their normal amount. You have quicker reactions but you pay for that by not being able to logically think about things

This is pretty shocking and I guess toxicology tests are routinely done now on the pilots, after a mishap of any kind. You’d almost think his girlfriend wanted it brought out in the open, or why tell the one person who would know what to do with such information ?
My suspicion is that the girlfriend didn’t actually say anything. I think other pilot may have known he had a habit, and wanted it investigated without admitting that he hadn’t brought it up before the crash.

Stimulants can increase focus and ability to concentrate, but they make you more impulsive after a certain point. The military used to/possibly still give amphetamines to pilots flying long missions, cocaine is a stimulant as well.

The Fairchild Metro (Merlin) was one of the finest aircraft ever built. Many of them are still flying.

Military still does issue speed the pilots , and can get Adderall easily

This is pretty shocking and I guess toxicology tests are routinely done now on the pilots, after a mishap of any kind. You’d almost think his girlfriend wanted it brought out in the open, or why tell the one person who would know what to do with such information ?
My suspicion is that the girlfriend didn’t actually say anything. I think other pilot may have known he had a habit, and wanted it investigated without admitting that he hadn’t brought it up before the crash.
@@Leigh-says-stuffyou’d think that would have come out in the subsequent investigation though. If there was a court case to decide on compensation, then he’d have been lying under oath and as the guy was dead, it probably no longer mattered who set the ball rolling. Over here, anyone wanting to become a pilot would need to submit a hair test, which shows usage over the previous 3 months approx, it’s the same for the police force.

Reminds me of the film flight with Denzel Washington I wonder would he be able to land the airplane if he was not under influence of alcohol I know it is just a movie but still??
Stimulants can increase focus and ability to concentrate, but they make you more impulsive after a certain point. The military used to/possibly still give amphetamines to pilots flying long missions, cocaine is a stimulant as well.
@@Sniperboy5551 I know alcohol lower your inhibitions and slows down your reflexes so I think and I am no specialist and I might be 100 💯 percent incorrect alcohol could make you make more hazardous maneuvers in a plane that you would not do sober but at same time if you are lucky also save the plane.
Such as any professional, I know drs lawyers, surgeons, dentists, and even some police officers as well as politicians who dabble with cocaine. 😝. I’m 44 years old and I’m sober for 13 years, the best cocaine I have ever tried was at a wedding where prosecutors, judges and a handful of drs were present and brought the goods 😂
It’s been a while, I’d love to get another taste some day. That was never really my thing, but I would never turn it down 😉
