You’d have to understand what the music scene was like in 1956 to understand how revolutionary this was.

He looked like a Greek God.
His voice was like butter and honey.
He dressed like nobody else and his hair was to die for.
He loved sharing and caring and he loved his fans.
Combine coolness and sex appeal with warmheartedness, boldness, humbleness, style, talent, uniqueness, innovativeness, beauty, and love for the Creator, and voila, you get Elvis.

Elvis came FROM NOTHING. Born in a shack with no running water or electricity. Twin brother died at birth and was buried in a SHOEBOX. So poor his black friend Sam Bell called him the poorest of the poor.
Yet his ability to interpret and arrange a song by merging three distinct genres, R&B, Country and Gospel was revolutionary. Elvis was an ARRANGER as much as he was Lead vocalist and Dancer. He was a creator of stage presentation, of clothing attire, the look of a rock and roll star. He was a crossover youth symbol for many young white, black and Hispanic people in the 1950s, no matter their race or creed, and always went against the order of older elites of the day.
Elvis was a youth rebel, who dressed with Italian and Cuban collar shirts, wide-legged, pleated trousers, blousons , long raised Pompadour hairstyle, sharp colors, denim and leather jackets, and always looked youthful and fresh. Always dressed on point. All eyes were on Elvis. And the older people hated the look and would threaten to arrest him and even kill him for his singing and dancing. Death threats became the norm to the day he died.
Elvis was a strong supporter of civil rights, hiring black musicians and staff members when almost noone was at the time, even during the race riots of the 1960s.

Thanks very much guys for reviewing. You know he could sing that song completely different, Many times. You can see another version of Hound dog on here. And that's how he did every show right through to the 70s. never the same. In sound or looks.

His performance on The Milton Berle Show is a much more raw performance of Hound Dog. In fact it was because of that performance that they started filming him from the waist up!

Elvis was a jokester and you could see it in his smile and his introduction of the song as a serious song. Also you could see his love for people and his graciousness and wanting others to be blessed as God had blessed him. People responded to his truly caring about others. ❤

He was only 21, it was 1956 and I was 12 yrs old. I sat on the floor in front of the TV, and turned around during the middle of the song and saw my dad grinning. He did a prior performance in sept, which was broadcast from Ca., and hosted by Charles Laughton, because Sullivan was recovering from an accident. During the Sept performance Elvis sang 3 songs, same for this Oct show. In Jan 1957, 2 days before his 22nd birthday, Elvis appeared on Sullivan and sang 4 songs.

I saw Elvis in concert in 1976. I was 14. The “older” women (in their 30s and 40s) who were of this generation still stood on chairs and screamed at the top of their lungs throughout the entire performance. It was a site to behold!

Most of the correct information is already in other comments, so rather than repeating, I'll try to give a little bit more context. This is 1956 America, where Perry Como, Dean Martin, Doris Day, etc are the staple on TV. Elvis was like something from another planet by comparison. Heartbreak Hotel, Hound Dog, Love Me Tender, and Blue Suede Shoes were all hitting the charts as well as others, and Elvis was setting sales records that the record company could not keep up with.

Elvis's hips! Quel scandale! Elvis is somehow amazingly charming and cool as he is youthfully awkward in these early clips. He's still absorbing his fame and he's a mix of cheek and bashfulness in these early periods. He lives on through all of us.

Elvis was on Sullivan's show 3 different times. This is the 2nd time. The 1st time was Sep.9, '56, when he got 82.6% of the entire television audience, when Elvis was in Hollywood filming his 1st movie "Love Me Tender" and Ed Sullivan was not actually the host that night because he was recovering at home from a car accident, so he had a replacement host, British actor Charles Laughton was hosting from New York remotely. But this is absolutely a live audience in the Ed Sullivan theater in NYC. He was still shown full body shots for both the 1st and 2nd shows. It was actually the 3rd time on the show, in Jan. '57, (he just turned 22), when the cameras would not show Elvis below the waist!!

Elvis was quite thw ham and didn't give a rat's ass about any controversy that came his way.
Ed Sullivan wasn't thrilled about having Elvis on his show but knew it was a stupid move not to.
Yes, the second time they would only show him from the waist up because the complaints that flooded the show.😅
In the beginning many especially in very racist areas of the country referred to Elvis's music using a derogatory slang for black people.
Saying he was adopting 'their ways'.
If you have never seen it I highly recommend the video (part 1)
    Elvis and the Black Community.
It rells.his beginnings as a child and his career in music.
    It's very interesting. 😊
Oh and Ed Sullivan had no idea who The Beatles were until he had them on his show.😅

I watched this show with my parents at years old. Dad said to Mom " we've got to watch Sullivan tonight. He's some new singer on that just goes crazy". They were on the couch and I was on the floor leaning back on the couch. The back up trio of singers were The Jordenairs. I got to see the and had them autograph a CD when the wife and I were in Las Vegas years ago.

Ed Sullivan really liked Elvis. He told the audience that they had the best time with a "big name star." Elvis was very polite to Ed, always using "yes, sir" and "no, sir." That's the way Elvis was raised. With that, many adults' attitudes toward Elvis were changed. If Ed likes him then they can like him.

  • @ehuston8041
    @ehuston8041 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Ed Sullivan wouldn't allow Elvis to do his gyrations because, at that time, the older folks considered it obscene. So that's why he wasn't moving his hips much during that performance.

He was actually only 21 years old here, he had released heartbreak hotel in Jan of that year and had just filmed Love Me Tender. Elvis was so tame on TV compared to his stage performances so you can just imagine what it was like. This style had never been seen on TV before and he was breaking all the norms of the performance etiquette by merely moving on stage, no white performer ever did that before. Imagine this was filmed nearly 65 years ago and man is he still rocking the viewers. Lovely upload and reaction.

  • @mrchips4489
    @mrchips4489 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Elvis was the first Rock & Roll superstar. Young people had never seen a singer move the way Elvis did; other white singers at that time just stood still and sang. Elvis was young, charismatic, and one of if not the best looking singers on the planet. No surprise that people went crazy when they saw him perform.

I love watching these live versions of Elvis back in the early days. Hound Dog is a great song! This was performed on the "Ed Sullivan" show in 1956. Many times you will see the backup quartet singers called "The Jordanaires" with him. They performed with Elvis in live appearances, on his recordings & in his films in the 50's-70's. Elvis' movements were considered scandalous to show on TV. Some shows only filmed him from the waist up.

My dad and 2 of his friends met Elvis a few months before this Sullivan appearance, in May 1956. Outside his hotel after a concert in Omaha, Nebraska. He hung out with them for about thirty minutes. Mainly due to their 1955 Oldsmobile convertible I think. He was a car guy. He sat on the back of the car with his feet in the backseat. My dad sat beside him. With a security guy standing on the sidewalk. Elvis would stand up to sign autographs if other people came up with things to sign, then would sit back down. He did not want to cruise around with them though. My parents love him but will not watch the new movie, because as my dad said they saw it already and hate what they did to him.

This group is in the Country Music Hall of Fame for their work with Elvis and many other greats

I'm late here, but I have to say this. Elvis Presley was charismatic when he was 21, 31 and 41. He was always charismatic. He was also the most beautiful man that ever walked the earth. He was actually my very 1st crush at age 7! I never get tired of watching him perform as he was born to do. He was a great singer with a very impressive range and yes, very distinctive. As for me, Elvis always receives a 10/10. There is nobody better. Not before, during or after him. Thank you for the reaction!

I truly enjoy you guys for the most part, but please get your facts straight - Elvis was born in Jan.'35, which made him the tender age of 21 on this appearance, not 24. You also stated that the show might have been broadcast from two different locations. You realized you were obviously mistaken at the end of Elvis's performance, but that fact would have applied to Elvis's debut on the Sullivan show. British actor Charles Laughton took over hosting duties for Ed from New York, while the 21 yr. old Elvis performed remotely from Hollywood, where he was shooting his first movie, “Love Me Tender.” Elvis appeared on the Sullivan show 7 times, but it was on the Dorsey Bros. "Stage Show" where Elvis made his very first tv appearances, right after he turned 21. He became a household word and rose to superstardom changing the face of music in not even a year. He also became successful in film in the scope of that time period. I was introduced to Elvis from his beginnings, by my GG, Grand and Mom in '91 when I was just 6yrs old and I've loved him ever since.

HI and thanks for the information and the corrections.
We really do these reactions as one take and what comes out of our mouths at the time is what stays in the video, we usually make the running list up as we go and collect the information right before pressing record, what comes out of our mouths may not always be what our brain is thinking.
We have some much to remember to do, like press record, we have done that a few times, recorded a whole reaction and forgot to press record.
We are not in the same location, so I have no idea when he is going to pause and have to jump in at the right time with the information, that I may have quickly read through.
So yup we get things wrong at times, but that should also give you something to comment about and put us straight.
Hope that helps and thanks for watching anyway

You have the wrong episode. They were in separate studios in Elvis' first appearance (Ed Sullivan wasn't even there following a car accident) in September. This was his second appearance in October.

I’d love for you to react to the original song by big mama thorton. It’s definitely more blues. It is amazing to see how Elvis made this song his own thing

No it was the first Milton Berle show when he played the full one. When Ed Sullivan saw the ratings shoot up, he booked Elvis for 4 appearances $50,000 pet performance, the highest he'd paid anybody. But he did tell him to tone it down a bit, which he did lol

Elvis was just a kid himself back then. This was before he got drafted, isn't it?

Check out the video Elvis and the Black Community , it will give you a better understanding of Elvis . It shows the music that influence him , the hatred he faced for singing that music and his belief in racial harmony . Then check out Elvis the King of Kindness , you'll see what a caring and giving person Elvis truly was . Unlike many stars who buy mansions around the world , Elvis bought yachts and gave them away to charity auctions , he gave away over 200 Cadillac cars sometimes to complete strangers . He truly was one of a kind .

There's a clip on TH-cam of Elvis on the Milton Berle Show preceding this one where he was more comfortable in being playful, especially at the end and then he interacts with Mr. Berle. You should check that out

Here's my theory as to why Elvis was irresistible to women (beyond his talent and looks); he came out on stage looking like the shy country boy in the big city. Nervous, stumbling over his words, vulnerable. Then he starts singing and he is transformed into the wild bad boy, totally in control, oozing sexuality. Then the song is over and he goes back to the humble country boy thanking God.
Elvis was both vulnerable and dangerous at the same time. What woman could resist? What other artist had both personas? They were either dangerous (Jerry Lee Lewis for ex). or non threatening (Pat Boone).
