    Elvis is best and always will be. he is amazing. He choreographed the dance moves himself There are very few that so many love as much as they do. He definitely was one of a kind and a very beautiful man with a great voice and a big heart with all of his charitable contributions

    He just feels the music, and moves. I’m sure they did some choreography for the movies, but what you see is him feeling the music. When he is performing in concerts, his movements are his way of keeping time and directing the music. His back up singers and band had to always keep their eye on him for that reason

  • @tlbeman
    @tlbeman ปีที่แล้ว +3

    There definitely was an overall choreography done by Alex Romero to that scene. Elvis created many of his own moves, reproducing his many stage performances. It still amazes me, that a young kid like him, with so little experience, could perform such a fantastic number. Thanks for sharing!

    He was 22 here. I have listened to Elvis since 1956 n yes im old now but Elvis music keeps me young. He started the famous moves Forest Gump when he was dancing it showed Elvis dancing. If you want to know anything about him I know almost everything. I love how you do research on everything about him. I was friends with Charlie Hodge his confidant and best friend for years after Elvis died. Charlie lived at EP home at Graceland. He told me great stories about Elvis n I even kept a journal so I can read it later in life. Charlie died in 2006 n I miss him so much n i loved the fact he was only 5' 3 " E voice matured in later years. I have been listening to alot of reaction videos n will decide on 3 that I will be a Patreon . I will tell you that you are one of them. Elvis is one of the best singers that has ever lived. He was also a fabulous entertainer. There is a reason he is called "The King". He had a great voice & could sing anything whether it was ballads, gospel or rock. He also acted in quite a few movies with great songs. "Jailhouse Rock" is considered one of the best (this is one of the first music videos). I enjoy a lot of his other movies even though some consider them a bit corny but the music is always great.

    Elvis started using drugs in the army back in 1958.
    Check this out
    In 1970 Elvis writes to President Nixon (the I am not a crook guy) and offers his services to help combat illicit drug use in the USA.
    Elvis mentioned that he knew a lot about drugs and was accepted by the hippies.
    He said he could go right into a group of young people or hippies and be accepted which he felt could be helpful to him in his drug drive.
    Nixon and Elvis exchanged pleasantries and agreed that “those who use drugs are in the vanguard of American protest.”
    In 1977 Elvis dies of drug overdose and drug abuse.
    Putting Elvis in charge of speaking on narcotic abuse is like leaving Dracula in charge of the blood bank.
    Hypocrisy: What is an example of hypocrisy?
    People who tell you not to eat candy while they chomp away on candy all day.

    My husband and siblings said that Elvis was a tsunami that hit the United States. He was completely different and very, very controversial. Kids, particularly girls, loved him while adults thought him scandalous. Since I was born in 1960, I missed the initial Elvis mayhem but my brother and sisters had all his records, and I grew up listening to his music and watching his movies (that’s a whole other story). Over the years, my husband, who’s 14 years older than me, tried to explain what an effect he had on the country, how there was talk of jailing him and banning him from tv. The later performances on The Ed Sullivan Show only showed him from the waist up. Elvis the pelvis, as the media had dubbed him, was too obscene to show below the waist. I didn’t really appreciate what my husband was talking about until I saw the 2022 Elvis movie. My husband knew all about the “pinky finger” moment and that his manager sucked Elvis dry.

  • @rw716
    @rw716 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Wow, I have not seen this in years!!! From what has been researched, there are 2 reasons that seemed to make the most sense....First, the move was born during Elvis’ first paid concert in 1954. While taking to the stage with Scotty Moore, his guitarist and Bill Black, his bassist, Presley found that he couldn’t stop his legs from shaking - being so nervous about performing in front of a paying audience. But rather than trying to hide this involuntary reaction, Elvis decided to use it to his advantage - backing away from the mic during the instrumental sections of tracks and emphasizing the shaking of his legs to the point that he seemed to be having some music-induced fit, as though the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll had entered his bloodstream like a shot of adrenaline. Presley not only managed to disguise his nerves but also sent the crowd into a frenzy, causing them to scream to such an extent that he nearly left the stage, fearing that he was being booed off.
    The second reason is his early experiences attending his Baptist Gospel church. Music and dance formed an important part of religious ceremonies in Baptist churches such as the one Elvis attended as a child. While the practice is largely associated with Pentecostal church-goers, some Black-led churches in the US provide forms of worship in which the Holy Ghost is invoked through music and dance, causing members of the congregation to flail limbs uncontrollably and - stereotypically at least - speak in tongues. It is possible that Elvis’ style was informed by watching the people around him celebrate their religion during those childhood church services.

    "Treat Me Nice" (the "B" side of the record you mentioned) is also from this same movie. You should react to it as well! You asked where you should start with watching Elvis movies. Well, Jailhouse Rock is a good one! His first movie was "Love Me Tender" (1956, age 21), a drama of love, jealousy, and sibling rivalry, set in the post-Civil War South. To be his first role, I think his acting was exceptional! HOWEVER, if you'd like to start with Elvis' own personal favorite of all the ones he did, it would be his 4th film, "King Creole," (1958, age 23), which was made between Jailhouse Rock and the time he joined the Army for a two-year service. He sings several songs in it, but also stands out extraordinarily as a serious dramatic actor. Very fine script and dialogue!

    Growing up in Mississippi, he frequented what were known as sanctified churches. A lot of his moves were based on things he saw there but he definitely put his own spin on it. His last home in Mississippi was in a predominantly black neighborhood. Prior to making the biopic, Baz Luhrman interviewed a childhood friend of Elvis named Sam Bell to get some insight into how he interacted with the black community. Sam said Elvis would not only hang out with them and attend the black churches. Sam said he and the other black kids tried to act cool and would stay in the back while the adults were feeling the spirit. However when they saw Elvis up front joining in with the adults, they all followed his lead.

    Great reaction, guys!
    Elvis looks timeless in this video. One could put him into 2023 and he would look cool.
    Before Elvis, there were artists like Paul Anka and Pat Boone. So, in the conservative mainstream, Elvis certainly touched down like a tornado (especially since the white community wasn`t prepared for such a shocker). ln the underground world black people listened to far more daring music than white people could not imagine. Every now and then some white people joined them. And then Elvis came and dragged a lot of the good stuff into the spotlight. He added his style to the music and the rest is history.

    No-one had moved while singing, before Elvis. That is why there was such outrage by parents, thinking it was indecent. Elvis grew up as a very poor white family living in a very poor black community, & it was there as a young child, that he saw Black people dancing in the Black revival church in the community, not from Forest Gump. Segregation was law in the South & Elvis was accused of dancing like Black people, & mixing with Black people.

    He was 22 years old when he choreographed the whole scene. There were no videos back then. This was just from the movie. If you keep following him you will notice his voice goats deeper as he gets older.

  • @kentlewis987
    @kentlewis987 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    So in the beginning the moves were based partly on what he saw in church and partly a nervous reaction to being on stage coupled with his natural sense of rhythm. When he noticed it made the girls scream, he played it up to develop his signature moves. It’s interesting to watch reaction videos by young African Americans as well as indigenous Africans. They’re always amazed to see that a white man had that kind of rhythm. Many have aptly pointed out what an influence he was on Michael Jackson.

    Actually the Jailhouse Rock scene did have a choreographer. His name was Alex Romero. Though the dance steps he showed Elvis were new to him Romero knew what Elvis could do and choreographed it from there.
    Source material:
    *_Wikipedia_*
    “I guess he thought that I was going to give him some slick dancing steps,” Romero said in the book. “I chose steps that were foreign to him, but that were also like him, so he could pick them up.”
    "Romero worked with Presley on the "Jailhouse Rock" number that was the climax of the film, but due to an oversight received no screen credit for his work. Berman sent Romero a letter of apology that was published in Variety. Romero's biographer Mark Knowles says that the "Jailhouse Rock" is "seen by many as a groundbreaking sequence in the history of film dancing, a transitional number propelling the film musical into the modern era." He went on to choreograph three other Presley films: Clambake (1967), Double Trouble, (1967) and Speedway (1968)."
    *_IMDB_*
    "In 1957, he choreographed "Jailhouse Rock" for Elvis Presley, conceiving the sets and costumes, and fighting with studio executives to include the rock and roll number in the film. He became close friends with Elvis and went on to choreograph three more films for him..."
    *_Elvis Presley talking about his movie career_*
    *_We had a...choreographer that just more or less geared the dance off of what I did._*
    (Skip to 2:54 second mark)
    th-cam.com/video/SgI3MWqO0Dw/w-d-xo.html
    For me becoming aware that the J-Rock number was choreographed by Romero didn't lessen anything Elvis did musically because he pulled it off as if he created the whole thing himself. Which shows how enormously talented he was.
    It's like a songwriter writing songs specifically for a singer's voice and/or style, same thing here. How many times have we discovered that a song had been recorded four or five times before the version we first heard? After they recorded it it was a wrap, it became "their song" and for the most part no other rendition will do it for you but theirs.
    The first time I saw Elvis was in 1962 in the movie *_Kid Galahad_* in Detroit. I was around 8 years old. When it opened there was this guy sitting on the back of a semi in an army uniform, singing his behind off! The name of the song was *_King of the Whole Wide World._* Here:
    th-cam.com/video/VMSlay6EPA4/w-d-xo.html
    Ever since then I was hooked! Especially after he sang *_I Got Lucky._* Here: (check out the new dance craze at the time, The Twist!)

    • @Elvista
      @Elvista ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The routine for this sequence came from Elvis. Romero wasn't credited because they did not use his version...he was responsible for the sets, costumes and getting the others to get their dance routine right to match how EP wanted it done. You can see the typical Elvis Presley moves in this choreography....moves he'd been using way before this movie came along. Romero did not teach him these. He did show him what he knew or how he'd do certain steps or dances. If Elvis didn't feel they would do, they didn't and he was very creative in coming up with ideas. Same with arrangements for the songs he sang. Otherwise, the majority of how Elvis moved and sang is according to himself.....as evidenced in concerts and his musical movies.

    His pre-army movies are his best: King Creole, Jailhouse Rock, Loving You. He made a handful of good movies after the army such as Wild in the Country & Follow That Dream but sadly it wasn’t what the public wanted. Viva Las Vegas is the best of his musical comedies. The chemistry (behind the camera as well as off) between him and Ann Margaret is off the chart!

    I seem to recall someone telling me that at the time he claimed he couldn’t help himself-he heard music and his legs and hips just took off. It was before my time too, but I know that the censors at the time had one heck of a time trying to shoot him from the chest up-eventually gave up. He def had charisma and sex appeal. I wonder if he was the first singer where women started that thing about screaming hysterically when he came into a room, or whether that was a thing before him. I never did get that.
    For the time, he’s a solid 10.

    Imagine, if you will, years after the movie was in theaters, little Tommy sitting on the floor on a Saturday afternoon and this came on. Needless to say the little boy's mind was permanently warped. Two thoughts. First, for an Elvis movie, his very first one, Love Me Tender, since it was based, loosely, very loosely, not even close really, only a few of the names remained, of the story of the Reno brothers gang, who pulled off the world's first train robbery in my home town of Seymour, Indiana. Second, look at the actor playing Elvis on the movie poster. Look at how he's dressed, look at the red guitar. Then watch Angelina Jordan's new video of Suspicious Minds, which is a poignant tribute to the King. She understands

    ELVIS TRIVIA: His first appearance on TV was on the Ed Sullivan Show where Elvis was only shown from the waist up!
    If I remember correctly, all but one of Elvis's movies were musicals and none of them got great reviews.
    Lastly, for many years I though that the song "Suspicion" (by Terry Stafford) ... was being sung by Elvis. To me, they sound very much alike. Oh silly me! 🙄

      Mason Steele: Let me kindly add to your Elvis trivia. Elvis' first appearance on TV was on Stage Show. He was on that show six times as well as on Milton Berle's and Steve Allen's shows. Then he appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show three times. Contrary to what most people think, the only time he was shown from the waist up was during his third appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Also, Elvis released "Suspicion" on an album in 1962 and as a single in 1964. Terry Stafford's 1964 version was the one that became a big hit. I hope you'll take this in the spirit in which it's given. Wishing you a great day, Mason!

      @@kathifielder1110 ... Thank you, Kathi. I stand corrected. I have heard Terry Stafford sing and I still think he and Elvis sound very much alike. Anyway, thanks again for your input. 😎

      @@masonsteele1674 I just took a listen to Terry Stafford's version. I like his voice, but I only get a slight similarity to Elvis's voice. I'm surprised I don't remember hearing Terry's version back in the day. Better late than never I guess. 😀

    He choreographed this number. He was naturally a great dancer, he had natural rhythm. Many will disagree with me but most of his movie's were garbage which is why he was very unhappy with them. I would suggest King Creole, Jailhouse Rock, Wild in the Country. Most of the others were chasing bikinis. Vicki

    You guys may have fun reacting to a cover of Elvis Presley's Way Down; it's a fun performance by Geoff Castellucci. He just put it out a few weeks ago; one of his solo videos, not with VoicePlay. As usual, Geoff's video clones give him vocal back up. Oh, and he dances.

    Elvis grew up influenced by US blacks’ (in the vernacular of the time) culture , music and dancing, in Mississippi. When he got popular here in US, parents were disapproving of his moves but too late. He went viral for his movies and performances.
