Manu is in my all-time top 5 drummers. Besides his work with Sting, Peter Gabriel, and Joni Mitchell, his playing on Tears For Fears' "Seeds of Love" CD ("Badman's Song" is a prime example) is incredible. He's one of the most musical drummer I've ever experienced.
In the current world of blazing drum chops all over social media Manu represents what drumming and musicality are on the highest level. He's not a household name but those that know..know!! He's had an amazing career for almost 40years now and still going! So many beautiful and true points in this interview that should be required viewing for all..And Dom! Great work!
Excellent observation Sasa Petkovic! We drummers are so blessed and very honored to have such a wonderful and humble ambassador to do these sessions. I met Dom years ago, and that meeting still inspires me today! He is bigger than life, and an incredible player and person.
What a cool trick to have Manu say his conclusion in FRENCH at the end. and realize what he was explaining just before even more clearly. It's about authenticity! ...And even Dom´s smile gets a tick brighter
Great interview, loved his playing with PG especially. Work your instrument daily, listen to a variety of music, and trust yourself - be who you are. Beautiful.
Wow! Great interview with one of the greatest drummers of our time. Check out his albums as well as his work with other artists on the ECM record label. He has taken the groove to a whole new level. He, a Frenchman, has taken a American rhythmic concept (funk) and elevated it to a classical art form, which is understandable considering his classical background. That he uses melody and harmony as focus points for his playing is evident in his open, fluid and very musical style. He has chops but I can tell it's more important to him to leave plenty of space for melody and harmony to breathe.
Eric Bolivar... dude Secret World Live and Manu is one of my all time favs. Cool seeing you on here. I actually got to meet Manu! Saw a rare performance of his jazz group at PASIC. Out of this world..
What a wonderful interview! You can see how his expressive drumming comes from who he is as a person. And, as someone who struggles to learn French, I'm so envious of how well he speaks in a second language. Talent!
Respect Mr. Katche,,,I've heard you early in my younger days. And boy, that phrasing on toms and splashes forever remained in my head. I remember being in Verona (Italy) in the Armani store, and listening music playing on the store's HiFi,,,,,Italian artist definitely, but the groove behind, the splashes and the feel....Nothing said more Katche than that,,,,,That was in 1989 I believe,,,,the guy was already all over the place
THANK YOU FOR THIS MR. FAMULARO. My mind is so blown, right now. First time I heard Manu's playing was on PGabriel's So album. I. Sat. Up. Could not believe what I was hearing. Just beautiful, colorful, musical. Like melted butter. He adds a dimension to the instrument that no one has done before. And I didn't know of his classical background. This is just wonderful. Thank you so much for this.
I'm a big fan of Manu's drumming and his albums as a bandleader. It's great to hear him talk about his formative years and his approach to creating music with others.
Dom I'm binging on these interviews. The interactive human element is incredible. Much better than a mag interview. These interviews are priceless. Keep it moving forward!
Say what you want about your best drummer, but Sting, Joni and Peter sure know how to pick them: Manu, Vinnie and Omar. I’d add Steve Gadd and Keith Carlock.
I've never heard another drummer express their deep love for classical music before this. And coming from one of my favorite drummers! What a great interview.
This is great! But I would have spent a lot of time discussing what made Manu such a stylish and graceful player. More specifically, he moves like a ballerina across the kit, the up-strokes are as important as the downs -bascially. Saw him many times with Peter, and his live feel was so great. Could never get over how amazing his live drum sound was, just jaw dropping, the snare hits in Shock the Monkey for example, OMG the best!
Thanks for doing this interview. Manu is also high in my list of all time favorite drummers. I especially enjoy his playing on Robbie Robertson's self-titled album from '87 on the song 'Showdown at Big Sky'.
Once me and my little family were waiting for our plane (can't remember where to) and in the embarking area were a handful of musicians, easy to spot with their cases. There we had Manu Katché and Richard Bona, both of whom I instantly recognized. Not sure who were the others, strong possibility Stefano di Battista was with them. It's always a bit weird spotting musicians you appreciate in the wild like that. I don't want to romanticize about it but... what a life this must be. Travelling on a regular basis, palying music with people equally talented, sharing your stuff with audiences all over the world.
@@Snook_ Oh I definitely know how it is for the vast majority of musicians, I've been through the peanut salary for a while. Even if not necessarily very rich, Katche and these fellows are definitely in the other 1%.
I was introduced to Manu through his work on the eponymous Satriani album. I remember thinking - who's the kick-ass drummer? only to learn later that I've heard him many times before with Sting
Another great interview Dom! Interesting how Manu talks about when you go into the studio focusing on charts compared to being creative. Saw a recent interview with Steve Smith talking about the same thing. As long as I'm playing drums I'm happy doing either :) Manu love your playing, Dom love your passion for the drumming world - keep groovin' brother! Always look forward to a new interview popping up :) I went into a Jail to do some Jail Ministry Music this week, was a fantastic experience and will be doing it again soon. Keep groovin', DC
What a fantastic interview. I learnt so much in the space of a short time. Manu has so much talent and has played on some of my favourite records, and you could tell even from his grooves that he is a scholar of music who understands melody and harmonic structures. Hard work, self-belief, persistence, networking and mentorship are key to making it in any walk of life, and drumming is no exception!
No disrespect for the AMAZING Peter Gabriel, but Manu on tour with him, is one of the reasons I went to see Peter’s recent I/O tour, just to hear Manu play live…incredible!
I especially liked Manu playing on Joni Mitchell's Chalk Mark In A Rain Storm album. Incredible building upon a unique theme in Lakota and sophisticated original groove on Secret Place. changed my life, thank you Manu and Dom for selecting such a rare talent to interview. Do you think he played that whole Joni Mitchell album in French? Lol. It sounds so flowing! ;-)
What a genuine, articulate and expressive gentleman. Inspiring in both music and conversation. Trés bon Manu.
My favorite drummer and my drumming idol. He is just the greatest and classiest person imaginable.
spot on.
Another example is Robbie Robertson’s “Somewhere Down the Crazy River.” Textbook original groove tight with Levin.
This guys hihat & splash work is amazing
He is a legend. His grooves have something no else’s does. Thank life for Manu Katche.
Manu is by far my favorite drummer.
I loved his drumming on Stings album Nothing like the sun and Soul Cages in my opinion the most beautiful Sting Albums!!!!
One of the greats 💙
Wonderful!
killer ! specially with michel jonasz from 1980 to 1985 ! amazing job
GGreat drummer, one of the best in the world. Beautiful rhythm sessions, played with the top musicians, which indicates what kind of drummer this is.
Very good interview dom and Manu just a little bonjour from Tahiti I remember when you came here we were honored merci
Great player and world class musician; couple that with great explanation of what he does and his life as a musician and a great interview.
In the current world of blazing drum chops all over social media Manu represents what drumming and musicality are on the highest level. He's not a household name but those that know..know!! He's had an amazing career for almost 40years now and still going! So many beautiful and true points in this interview that should be required viewing for all..And Dom! Great work!
Great phrase "those that know, know". Class guy.
Dom is an ideal host for shows like this. Polite, professional, expressive and with excellent questions for artists and the audience alike. Kudos!
Excellent observation Sasa Petkovic! We drummers are so blessed and very honored to have such a wonderful and humble ambassador to do these sessions. I met Dom years ago, and that meeting still inspires me today! He is bigger than life, and an incredible player and person.
...And very warm human being.
Manu Katche....great drummer/musician....Dom is a great musician/interviewer too.
What a cool trick to have Manu say his conclusion in FRENCH at the end. and realize what he was explaining just before even more clearly. It's about authenticity! ...And even Dom´s smile gets a tick brighter
Brilliant "different" drummer. Great fills and accents in songs. Superb!
Great interview, loved his playing with PG especially. Work your instrument daily, listen to a variety of music, and trust yourself - be who you are. Beautiful.
It's rewarding to learn one of the world's greatest drummers is also an inquisitive, humble, fascinating person. Thank you.
His playing with Sting and Peter Gabriel is Legendary... Class act
Manu is so inspiring to listen to 17:00 is gold
This guy is in a category all his own. Thank you, Dom, for brilliant interview

Wonderful interview. This cat is one of the worlds finest drummers! Merci Manu
Manu! Great now I'm going to be up all night listening to "Please Come Talk to Me" live from Secret World Live on repeat.
Eric Bolivar... dude Secret World Live and Manu is one of my all time favs. Cool seeing you on here. I actually got to meet Manu! Saw a rare performance of his jazz group at PASIC. Out of this world..
Check out Red Rain from Back to Front....Mind Blowing Manu!!
Class act. Have always and will always love his grace and style of playing.
J'adore Manu Katche !!
It was perfect that Manu's example of a mentor and friend was Jeff Porcaro, as they are both of the Greatest Groove Drummers ever..
Fantastic! Great to hear Manu speaking in English throughout and then the same message in French at the end! Wise words. Bravo Manu, ça tue!
The art of the craft explained so eloquently. Brilliant musician.
Amazing musician and an amazing intelligent human being.
Awesome interview, great drummer. That tympani grip he mentions is also known as the "French grip".
What a two drummers we have here! Two of the greatests!!!
" Consistently excellent" That phrase sums it up. Jeff Porcaro , Manu Katche Steve Gadd taught me what less is more is all about.
Thank you so much Dom for this superb interview !!!!
Merveilleuse interview. Honor to you both guys. Thank you a lot. I shared already.
What a wonderful interview! You can see how his expressive drumming comes from who he is as a person. And, as someone who struggles to learn French, I'm so envious of how well he speaks in a second language. Talent!
It's the classical background that it reminds me of home in NJ at the shore
Best drummer in the world. Always my favourite. And a down to earth guy too

theicnot Oh totally. Have the same feelings. And you are so right about the splashes!:)
👍
My favorite. What an incredible run he had in the mid- to late-80s.
awesome interview. straight from the soul
I wish his own album, with his compositions, would have been presented and discussed. I especially like "Third Round".
Manu is amazing. Sure miss Dom. RIP.
One of my drum heroes! Merci Manú! 🤝🏻
Fantastic!
Manu has been a favorite of mine since I first heard "That Voice Again" in '86.
Manu!!!!
Thanks
Great interview.
The first major concert I went to was Peter Gabriel with Manu & I thought Wow, what an amazing drummer!
Love Manu.........such a unique drumming voice.
I watch Manu Katche online just a few months ago... he is an ABSOLUTE GENIUS of DRUMMING.
What a wonderful and unique musician.

Thanks Veronica! We've got a lot more amazing interviews with all types of musicians to learn from!!
Say what you want about your best drummer, but Sting, Joni and Peter sure know how to pick them: Manu, Vinnie and Omar. I’d add Steve Gadd and Keith Carlock.
En Francais c'est beau! He is a fine man this one. Very inspired playing in all the Peter Gabriel and Sting records I grew up listening to.
I've never heard another drummer express their deep love for classical music before this. And coming from one of my favorite drummers! What a great interview.
I remember hearing "Somewhere down the crazy river'...everything changed after that.
Badman's Song - Tears for Fears
That's where it started for me as well
I could not believe my ears when I heard Manu's work on Robbie Robertson's 1987 self titled album, sublime artistry.
This is great! But I would have spent a lot of time discussing what made Manu such a stylish and graceful player. I love Manu on and off the kit. Yet another passionate exchange of passion with my Dear friend Dom
