Discussing the Train Sim World 4 Announcement (Do we really need this, Dovetail?)

  • Dovetail Games are really testing my patience, especially after announcing that Train Sim World 4 is real. This 'new' iteration of the TSW game includes decent core updates that shouldn't be locked behind a paywall; they should be released as a free update for the existing TSW3 instead of DTG trying to milk our wallets well past the point of being bone-dry.
The three core routes are all new to TSW, but they only include one form of motive power each (ÖBB 4024 'Talent', LNER Class 801 and Metrolink F125), while the Austrian 'S-Bahn Vorarlberg' route is the only truly interesting one in the pack. The other two are 'ECML - Peterborough to Doncaster' (the most boring section of a highly-requested route, because of course Dovetail had to stick up their middle finger at us again) and Metrolink's Antelope Valley Line. The AVL is 75 miles long, has 13 stations, only 11 trains a day in each direction and takes at least two hours to complete. How could anyone think making this route for TSW was a good idea?

just a reminder that this isn't the dev's fault, it is the fault of the executives at DTG. The devs hate DTG as much as we do,
They have complained before about the working conditions, and they'll probably will again, even Matt and the other people we commonly see have complained before. They're also rushed to do routes because the executives want more money.

Im done with DTG, I learnt my lesson after purchasing TSW 1, I gave them a chance to change their scamming ways and hope they fix TSC, but they have basically embraced being corrupt and greedy, Thankfully there are much better sims on the market now (Simrail, Run8 & DRS) So departing from playing anymore DTG Train "Sims" has not been difficult, Id recommend others to do so and let this company dig its own grave and bury itself

Why did they choose the Antelope Valley line?
Having ridden all 7 lines on Metrolink’s system, here’s why: Because it is the most scenic and most difficult to run line on Metrolink’s system. It’s the second busiest line by passenger ridership and train frequency only to the San Bernardino, which as you mentioned is already out there. On top of that it’s increasing growth (Reflected in the addition of Vista Canyon) is going to make it by far the busiest line in the system soon. The plan is to update the infrastructure so that the trackage can support service at increments of 15 minutes on peak and 30 minutes off peak. This is being done by various siding extensions and double tracking projects. The frequency they are aiming for is busier than San Bernardino which is 30 minutes peak and 1 hour off peak.
On top of that I’d imagine Metrolink likely had a hand in suggesting the Antelope Valley line and dovetail agreed. The Orange county line isn’t busier than AV like you stated and this is reflected in the fact Orange County has fewer trains operated over it. In addition, the Orange County line has been closed south of Laguna Niguel for almost an entire year now and only reopened recently due to erosion taking out the tracks in San Clemente. Seeing as how they filmed from inside the cab, the OC line likely wasn’t possible to get in full for the game. Perhaps that led to the decision as well.
There’s also the fact that the Orange County line is also the Pacific Surfliner route. Granted TSW4 doesn’t have this route, but literally every other simulator does. Run8, Openrails, TSC, etc
It’s funny how the only people that are ticked off over the decision to choose AV are only people who have never been to SoCal or even ridden the Antelope Valley line. Us folks who use the line or live around it are beyond ecstatic they chose this one.

    • @TheTrainspotterFromTauranga
      @TheTrainspotterFromTauranga  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I'm fine with people liking the Antelope Valley Line, especially if they're locals in real life, and I saw another comment talking about the scenic highlights of the route. But, from a gameplay perspective, I still think the route will get boring because of its spartan timetable and limited service variation. To be fair, I do still like US commuter lines as a whole.
I will admit that I don't know too much about the Metrolink network, and I'll try to hold any further critique of the AVL until after the add-on is released (or until I've done more research on the line).

    • @MojaveSubMatthew
      @MojaveSubMatthew 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@TheTrainspotterFromTaurangaThanks for the response! I’m fairly certain it’s the most scenic line but I am concerned about the renderings we’ve seen of it… perhaps it was the lighting they showed them (Much easier to tell in day rather than orange sunrise/sunset like they chose) but I wasn’t super impressed. Granted they aren’t done yet so maybe i’ll give them the benefit of the doubt there. I’ll wait and see before I spend my money, run 8 is still my preferred one since I am a freight lover lol. But Metrolink is local so it struck a chord of interest.
The rolling stock looks accurate to the real thing but the rest of it concerns me. Hope dovetail adds in the MP36 and bombadiers later. They actually have been refurbishing the bombadiers lately so it’s clear they want to keep them. It’s rare to get a fully rotem set like is being offered, so it’s not completely accurate yet…There’s also still a few of the old F59s out although they are pretty uncommon. So those would be cool. We may have one of the weirdest commuter systems in the country (Seeing as Metrolink markets themselves as a Regional rail system despite mostly operating as a commuter system)
Do I think there’s going to be faults? Absolutely, in fact there’s several I picked up on but I do think the route will be fun to operate over. Being that I ride the line and sit in a seat that isn’t the most comfortable every time I do and enjoy it I think i’ll be fine with the length. I do wish them to add some of the other Metrolink lines too. It sounds like Metrolink loved this idea and was very accommodating. Ventura county is a pretty one too and the San Bernardino as I said is probably their most well known line being that it slays the most traffic of the 7.

    • @TheTrainspotterFromTauranga
      @TheTrainspotterFromTauranga  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

'Slays the most traffic' - I like that expression. Unfortunately, here in New Zealand, there are very few regional passenger trains still running outside of Auckland and Wellington (none in my city since 2001), so you guys in LA are lucky. I wish we didn't have to use our cars as often as we currently do.
Thinking back to TSW4, I don't expect DTG to ever add the old F59PH / F59PHi locomotives, but I do hope they add the MP36 + Bi-Levels at some point. And it's a good thing that Metrolink themselves were so accommodating for Dovetail.

While I'm glad Austria is coming to TSW4, I'm pissed that the Peterborough to King's Cross section is not included in ECML. For the Metrolink route, I personally think they should have included the San Bernadino Line. I hope they at least conspenate by layering the Metrolink stock at San Bernadino on Cajon Pass.

I'm sure I'm not the first, nor will I be the last person to say that Dovetail is seemingly doing the same thing they once did with Train Simulator Classic. Back when it was "Train Simulator 20--", every year they'd change the date in the title and advertise it like it's a brand new game, when in truth it's the same game with a few bugs fixed (and in the process new ones being created) as well as a different selection of routes that come free with the game for new players. For Train Sim World they're seemingly doing the same thing. The only difference is that they aren't an update to the original game (like with Train Simulator Classic) and instead are treated as separate games. I won't be surprised if Dovetail Games decides to make a new train game and decides to retitle the Train Sim World series as "Train Sim World Classic" or something.

I bet you DTG purposefully avoided the Kings X to Peterborough section of the ECML just so that they wouldn’t have to work on the much more interesting scenery on the section as well as including Great Northern and their rolling stock. The same can be said for the Metrolink Orange County line with the scenery and the inclusion of Amtrak Pacific Surfliner trains as well because putting in more work and effort is simply not DTG’s policy!
What do I think about this?
    It’s Disgraceful, Disgusting, and Despicable!

  • @herrhornbuckele5227

I mean yeah three routes for 35,99€ is not the worst but what the hell are those routes? One train per route, not even any re used trains? Damn those routes must look empty if you don't own any other DLCs. The time setting for the Austrian route is also not great since it means no Desiro and I don't know about Railjets (regarding that, why the hell aren't we getting any Austrian intercity train here?) and IC trains running there nowadays. The only good thing are the scenario creator improvements and the editor, providing these are as good as they were looking on stream because then I can just do the job Dovetail fails to do myself.
I guess I'll just wait until TSW5 drops next year and then get a key for a couple of bucks.

I bought all TSW's including Heavy Haul on day one, TSW3 was begrudgingly day one too despite similar levels of irritation towards how they were fleecing us but I genuinly felt they wouldn't shaft us so much this time only to see them do it worse than before.
I've only put about 120 hours in as i've been waiting on them to fix certain things before putting the time in with bigger routes, only for the bigger routes I now need to either save money with a pre-order and buy it to be a beta tester or wait 6 months for it to be half price but know the game only has a few months left on it.
I'll just stick with TSW3 and turn to TSC for the full routes as usual, for every bit of promise shown in TSW4 we know it won't see any real potential from it until TSW5, assuming the route builder isn't still in beta by then, which we know it will be.

Do you think a route based off of a light rail system like DART would be an interesting concept for TSW? I understand that, yes, it's just a stop-go-stop-go passenger rail route, however DART is a very long system, about 93 miles (150 km) long. The route has four lines plus many interesting operations within and between the two major yards. You could run standard train services, short turns, yard moves, power moves, breakdown trains, or any number of other services. There would also be loads of opportunities for sessions during rush hour, the most interesting part of DART service operations.
For sessions, you'd probably get the generic terminus to terminus sessions (for example, Red Line from Parker Road to Westmoreland, and vice versa), as well as various short turn sessions (for example, Orange Line from DFW Airport to Fair Park) with an extra drive out to the yard to park your train, a Not In Service training run (maybe to serve as a route and train tutorial) as well as yard movements, rescuing broken down trains and other such activities (which Dovetail would probably charge for).
As for session lengths, the Green, Red and Blue lines all take about 1 hour to traverse in full, while the Orange Line takes about 90 minutes. You'd be operating exclusively on LRT right of way but it isn't all boring. There's some pretty neat junctions and a transit mall where all four lines come together. I'd imagine the sessions would be quite challenging, as you do need to precision stop your train to line up with the platform humps for wheelchair access and constantly be alert and on the lookout for signals.
Knowing Dovetail they'd only model one or maybe two of the four lines and charge you $40 bucks for the entire route, plus an added $20 for the other lines (as well as session packs and wrapped train skins). Maybe if they charged $20 for two lines and an extra $10 for the other lines, it'd be fine. I'd probably still buy it anyway as I'm a Dallas native and have always wanted a route depicting DART. I'm curious to hear what you have to say about the concept!

Unfortunately, this "forced migration" policy has been evident since TSW2. That was meant to be the title which would be continually developed and updated. DTG then issued a roadmap for it before announcing TSW3. TSW3 was released, and TSW2 was abandoned.
Exactly the same thing will happen when TSW4 is released. DTG will rinse and repeat this process for as long as their player base continues to allow themselves to be treated like mugs.

The only thing that made me care about TSW 4 is The EDITOR.
With the Full TSW Editor now in the picture, you will be able to see some NZ and Australian Content, thanks to me and some other people I know.
Think Suburban and Regional NZ, Australia, and other places never seen before in TSW. (Ukraine, Japan, Spain etc)
If there was still no Editor, I would just have glossed over TSW 4. It would just be another "un-interesting" September for me.

I've never seen someone so upset about the AV line 😂. Yes, it's clear Dovetail simply chose the AV as it's terrain and landscape is similar to Cajon Pass, but it is clear you know very little about the Metrolink System as a whole. Allow me to inform you, the Antelope Valley line is actually THE busiest Metrolink line in terms of ridership, according to Metrolink Q4 22-23. The frequency is also exactly the same as of the OC line, the OC also has 11 TRAINS A DAY- that's not even to mention the fact has 2 MORE trains than the OC line on weekends. The AV line is also set to be the first electrified Metrolink line. If you want the OC line, go play literally any other rail simulator, I assure you. no matter what you choose the Surfline will be a route. The AV line traverses nearly every single biome California has to offer, except for the Coast of course. Begins in a busy dense city, later the Los Angeles suburbs, then you enter the Newhall Pass. The pictures you see of "Newhall Pass" when you search it up on google are almost all shots south of Tunnel 25 (the 2nd longest tunnel in California), self plug but see my Instagram page for the lush tree filled northern end of the tunnel. After that, you end up in another suburb and that'll take you to a longer, steeper, mountain pass than Cajon. Once you finally reach the end of Soledad Pass, you end up in a flat Joshua-tree filled desert. "How many people would have the patience to drive a virtual train for as long as two hours", sir, have you ever heard of Flight Simmers? Flight simmers sit down for 12 hours at a time, while flying a virtual plane that is on autopilot for 90% of the trip. The rail community has these same folks, who mostly play on operational realistic simulators such as Run8. All due respect, the lack of research purely on the AV line makes me question the validity of the entire video.
EDIT: I'd like to make something clear, I am by no menes defending Dovetail games for their blatant money grab. Matter of fact, I have never even owned a TSW game- the AV line is the only reason for my purchase of TSW4. I normally play opperarionaI realistic simulators such as Run8. I've only ever purchased Train Simulator 2012, and that's it for Dovetail. All I am doing is doing is defending the Antelope Valley Line.
I understand that emotions are high from the blatant money grab, and I believe that is the primary reason people are so upset. The route just managed to get itself intangled in this mess.
I will give the TSW community this piece of advice, however. As this is my first TSW game I am not familiar with the community but I believe it is in your best interest to simpily protest this blatant money grab by just not purchasing the game. Boycotts are some of the most effective form of protest. Stay respectful, it is clear the TSW community is significantly more immature than other communities such as Run8 and I understand that that's primarily because of it's younger playbase, but if there's one thing to know it life, the kinder you are the more good things will happen to you- grow up.

@@Atrail_Mckinley4786 The Antelope Valley corridor between Burbank and LA is actually the busiest corridor on the Metrolink system. There's 35-40 deadhead Metrolink trains from Taylor Yard to LA Union station, and 42 revenue Metrolink trains if you include the VC line. That's ~82 trains a day, not even including all the freight. "Oh they should have choose the VC line"- The VC line only has 10 trains a day, and only 2 trains a day on weekends, and not to mention Metrolink does not even own the entire route. As for Union Pacific operating the AV instead of BNSF, I don't see how that is an issue unless you have some obsession with orange paint or something. While I'm glad Metrolink (my hometown commuter railroad) is finally licensed. I don't think the Antelope Valley Line is a good choice. As a former Los Angeleno, it's not that busy from memory. I would have preferred a new take on Pacific Surfliner with Amtrak, BNSF, Coaster, and Metrolink. It also bothers me that we're getting a 4th. I still have TSW2 and only because someone gifted me that. I tried it. Didn't impress me much. I stick with Classic mostly becase Classic has some decent routes and great route builers who make great stuff on the Workshop. But, TSW...yeah, not my cup of tea. If DTG did what SCS Software did and made DLC that was worth more than the price and give us free stuff periodically such as a free loco pack for existing routes, we might have something. But, DTG makes stuff sometimes that hurt me. Especially the recent Saluda Grade route. As someone who rode over it in person before NS mothballed the line, the route feels a bit off and hurts me.

Not to mention it has the some of the best scenery on the entire Metrolink system. Does the OC line snow? Didn't think so. Does the OC line have nearly every biome in California? No. The AV does.

It's also worth mentioning I've never purchased a Train Sim World game prior to this. By variety I am assuming you mean how many railroads run on the line, that is true more railroads do run the LOSSAN. AV has UP and Metrolink, but the AV has more mainline freight then the LOSSAN. Amtrak does in fact eventually plan to run to Newhall to avoid traffic with their throughway busses to Bakersfield, so that's a custom scenario you can add if you want. The AV line is also home to a movie railroad, reporting mark SCRX.

The AV line is my favorite and many others favorite and as the other commenter said its got very good variety in scenery and a pretty similar schedule. The AV line actually has a better schedule in my opinion there’s 18 trains that run the full length of the line between LA and Landcaster (9 each way per day) while the OC line only has 10 that go all the way to Oceanside (5 each direction per day).

I want to see the 130km Southern Railway Chennai Central - Katpadi Jn, with the Branch lines to Tiruttani, Anna Nagar, Pattabiram E Depot and Vellore Cantonment included. The route should be complete with WAU-4(9/12C), 3-Phase Medha(12C) & Vande Bharat(8/16C) EMUs, ICF (8C) MEMU, WAP-4 & WAP-7 Electric Locomotives, Utkrisht & LHB Coaches in their respective liveries (usually 18/24C per train) and the WDM-7 shunter for the yard at ICF.
I know most people won't be able to get the scale of what I'm asking for. For reference, the route is similar to München - Augsburg, but it's longer, there is no 'RE' level service (it's mostly S-Bahn style trains that operate out of the city) and there are more stations. I will happily pay 50USD for a route like this (not particular to India) and it would still be good value. If DTG wants feedback for some reason, they can look up the route and they will understand the value they should provide.

@@TheTrainspotterFromTauranga Me too mate. I am not familiar with Austria but I do remember the Albergbahn from MSTS with Golsdorf 380 steam train. Nice route in the alps but as for TSW4. I was hoping that they would have done Surfliner with the Amtrak GE P42DC and the Siemens ALC-42 chargers on the passenger trains and for freight. A Tier 4 GEVO in the BNSF and Union Pacific. Although the EMD F125's could run as far Oceanside but with the Lancaster route. I am sure there will be reskins of the Rotem cars that could use Surfliner colours as a stop gap until the Surfliner route and trains come out. I was hoping to see a P42DC so I can floor it on the open tracks :).
On the positive side of things. I am happy to see route building tools and editors coming out! That means we can add our own trains, mods and buildings etc. I am more happy about this if anything. Anyway its nice to speak to you on here and I think we are connected on Steam as I am BritishRail60062 on there as well.

    1. Why did we need this in the first place
    2. Why does the ecml route only have 1 train. They shouldve added the class 91, class 802 for hull trains, and the class 800.
    3. Why does the ecml route stop in the most random place at doncaster. It shouldve been extended to york. Either that or go London - Peterbrough or heck, even York - Newcastle
    4. Why do dtg not care or acknowledge the existence of more than 3 American tsw users.
    5. Why antelope line. Why not one of the busier metrolink lines.
    6. Why would i spend 2 hours driving anything where i cant see any other trains or interesting scenery.
    7. In the Dresden - Riesa route, why cant they add the short branch to Dresden Flughafen. It is barely any length and would make so much more sense than the dbbr 143 services ending at Dresden Neudstadt.
    8. Why do i need to buy dresden again just to get the updates.
    9. Why haven't they announced what routes are in the special edition. It is very annoying for people who want to pre order.
    10. This better not be the new standard of just ONE train per route by default.
Also, if they really wanted to include this section of the ecml, they should've extended it to York, Hull, and Lincoln, added the class 802, 800, 153 and 91, or, extended it to Leeds, and added the class 800, 91, 153 and 322/331.

      - Nahverkehr Dresden - Riesa

Birmingham Cross City, Cajon Pass, Bremen - Oldenburg, Kassel - Wurzburg etc. Even some routes get released with no new trains - Glossop Line, SEHS extended. At least the ECML gets flying scotsman and voralberg the vectron plus the Azuma and Talent (with awful sounds), admittedly locked behind the deluxe edition.

They didnt do athe class 800 because they didn't have access to one in the designing process and there are some differences. They couldn't do lumo as they don't stop at Peterborough nor Doncaster so it wouldn't work with the route, and hull trains don't stop at Peterborough but just Doncaster so there really isn't a point unless it gets extended in the future like they did with south Eastern high-speed. Also the class 803 run by lumo doesn't have a deisel engine and it fully electric it does have batteries tho which means the cab would need to be changed but it is for limp home only

Given the cost of living crisis in many places today, this just kicks the player in the guts yet again. I would say DTG are targeting those new to the game both on PC and console, whose goodwill they haven't already obliterated with the shonky, copy and paste development. If you buy, you should realise you're opting into being a beta tester until the next "patch/update" is sold as TSW5. What a dumpster fire this is. 11:19
