- Our first winter in an RV was devastating. No running water for 2 days and a propane furnace that could barely keep up. We barely endured a snowstorm and temperatures of -5 degrees.

Great video. Thank you. Check out Xtreme Heaters. They are a bit pricey but have a small foot print, use little power and turn on and off automatically based on the low (40) and high temp (55) in the compartment. Thanks again!

Omg you guys just totally saved my pipes! Today I was doing exactly what you did using my electricity to save my propane. I never thought about those pipes. Thank you thank you thank you!
I'm originally from upstate NY and to save on heat take a old blanket or sheet and cover doorways or areas you do not use clothes off the vents to the old rooms or areas
Our tip would be while travel nursing during winter in PA.
We had a large propane tank from the local propane company delivered to our site so we could keep up with our furnace and not run out of fuel so often
Hey Alex! That is an awesome tip! Being in colder climates, you sure can burn through propane quickly and it really helps having the larger tanks. When our tanks froze, we went through a 30 pound propane tank in 24 hours 😭No fun, but you live and learn. Staying warm!!! But then again we live in Florida lol! When we do cold camp we carry a heat gun along in case the outside water lines freeze up. 😊 And we also disconnect the outside water hose but use the heat gun for the Spicket the next day if it’s frozen

Thanks for the shout out guys! Great video! We have had our pipes freeze before and it's no fun. We were in South Dakota last year in April when we had a couple of winter storms come through. Luckily our employer let us use the shower in there guest house.

More great lessons for folks just starting out. Cold weather camping can be tricky. We highly recommend a heated water hose! You can then run water on a very slight trickle at night to keep water flowing (we learned through frozen lines too!) Another awesome video guys, glad you nothing got damaged. -Chris & Suzannah

Heated water hose and using heat tape seem to be a great fire risk- many catching fire.
Seems like leaving the water running with the grey drain open would be the better idea.
Or filling the fresh water tank and using the pump with furnace heat
GREAT JOB (as usual) - very informative!
RV TIP:
Warm your inside plumbing by opening your bathroom and kitchen cabinets, so your trailer’s heating can keep your internal plumbing warm. Also, allowing a SMALL drip from faucets into a bucket in the kitchen sink can also help prevent freezing by keeping water moving. Use the water in bucket to flush toilet. BUT PLEASE, keep an eye on the bucket, so you don't have a water overflow DISASTER.

Texas is a lot warmer during winter, then travel north around March or April. It rarely freezes here during winter here. I'm in Houston. Only twice this winter. The norm here is 30's and 40's at night. 50's to 70's in the day. Ya'll would love Galveston, Texas. They have a lot of RV parks there.

The one thing we do when hooked up to electric in cold weather. We put a small electric space heater that has a thermostat on it, in the underbelly to keeps the pipes from freezing. Most 5th wheels have an outlet in the underbelly. You just have to have it warm enough to keep from freezing the pipes.

With your skirt insulation barrier (hay bails work great), hang a string of 100 watt light bulbs using the other 15 amp circuit at the post, keeps the belly above freezing. A lamp in the basement will thaw the pipes out as well.

I saw it in the video Kyle...that moment when you realized that the pipes were frozen and that sinking feeling of “well what now” sank in. While not having been there because of frozen RV pipes...I’ve been there for countless other issues. Well done you two for persevering through this rough patch. But it looks like an invaluable lesson was gained and you’ll be better prepared for the next one. We’re packing up to head west (like right now now) and there is a chance of snow...so I went and grabbed some material to make a skirt. Thanks for the heads up y’all 🤙

How did the skirt work for you in the cold weather? We haven't planned a trip in the cold yet but we want to start RVing more and that would mean some cold weather camping.
@@OurGoldRoad the skirting worked out wonderful. I wish I hadn’t waited so long to do the skirting, because we have saved so much propane since finishing it. The amount the heat retention goes up underneath the belly of the RV is really good. I installed a recirculating pump under the kitchen sink that I run in cold temps. it has a timer and thermostat if you want to set it in an automated fashion. it helps keep the water flowing through the pipes

WHAT, snow ball at the camera??? LOL. So, this is making sense why our propane heater vents run through the floor, cause it's close to the tanks and the water pipes. Ours isn't a 4 season RV, but we could still see freezing in the early mornings occasionally.
What can I say, Renee was feeling extra salty and wanted to take it out on the camera 🤷♂️ 😂 lol yeah we had even tried plugging up some of our vents in the upstairs temporarily to force warm air back into the underbelly. It was a loooong process of getting these puppies unfrozen, but they finally pulled through! I guess Texas can have some freezing temperatures too right? Haven’t spent much time in Texas, but I’m sure it encounters its fair share of low temperatures

We had that happen to us in Wyoming; luckily it was just our sewer hose. Bill used the hairdryer trick, and we were off and running in a matter of about 30 minutes. However, it can be pretty serious; especially, when it's a really hard freeze and you end up with busted pipes. Glad you came out on top of that situation.
Oh the sewer hose, wasn’t even thinking about that. So sorry that happens to you guys 😕 it’s crazy how much the weather can be unforgiving at times.
When Renee and I had first pulled into the campground, we tried dumping at the dump station. Our tanks wouldn’t dump either at that point. To thaw out frozen waterline : leave open a faucet. Heat up a pot of water. With silicone or latex gloves on , dip rag in the water and rub on frozen spots til it starts running again. I was a repair plumber for 40 years

Love your electric fireplace. Great tips. We have a three season trailer, hoping not to be anywhere that's freezing once we start full timing. Never thought about drafts with the slide outs. So true about using a dehumidifier. Lots to worry about in the cold. Stay warm.
Thank you so much! Yes, the electric fireplace is really nice to have. We had a hard time balancing the electric fireplace and propane furnace at first. Great video. We don’t deal with snow but we do live in our camper more in the winter. I’ve never thought about not using the gas heat more. We user the fireplace so much and turn the gas heat down cause the fireplace usually keeps the RV warm.

Great info. Also if you are in the South and you are expecting temps to drop below freezing but it's borderline you can put an incandescent light bulb on a small lamp and place about a foot behind your piping. That will be sufficient and will be a lot safer than a small space heater or heat lamp.

Great video you two! What I would stress is to seal off at the pass-thru wall as much as you can.(Pool noodles, foam board or whatever you can get) This will help keep more heated air in the underbelly compartment. Plus as the gas/propane heater heats the RV, the return air, that goes under the inside steps, will keep circulating the pre-heated air more efficiently. My suggestion is, try not to wrap the individual water lines as you need them to stay open and exposed to the heated air. I know, sounds crazy but it works.

Small infrared heat lamps in compartments where you have uninsulated pipes can work wonders.
Little tip guys if your hooked up to water in winter with a heat tape water line as long as the water is dripping your pipes will never freeze

Do you still put skirting on when you are using onboard water?
@@AstheCamperRolls We haven't utilized skirting thus far for our camper. Once we do however, yes we would totally be placing skirting and utilizing onboard water unless we had some source of outside water from a heated hose or something. Did you ever meet up with them? They are now in an Airstream after several other RVs. I have never meet them but follow them 😊😂

Reflectix in the windows (behind the blinds) helps a lot of keeping warm (And cool in the summer). We learned the hard way keeping warm didn't mean the basement was warm. We froze our pipes in Texas. So we turned off the Aux heat and cranked up the Furnace. Took a couple days before we regained ALL water flow.
These are some incredible tips, we really found out the reflectix works well! So sorry to hear that you had this problem as well, it’s amazing how long it can take to thaw things out 😣

We have an oil filled space heater (electric) that we put in our bottom compartment. Of course that would not work in a boondocking situation. We also disconnect the water hose too. We haven't stayed in the cold much because we chase 70 degrees and winter down south. Good thoughts about the slides leaking air though. Agree with the dehumidifier in general for an RV. I survived the texas freeze, ran out of propane, no electricity for 3 days. It got down to 27f inside RV for 3 days. Used 5 blankets and brought a 60lb & 80lb dog and 2 cats in bed. Had to put 4 blankets under me because i had a gel top mattress which is like a slab of ice to lay on. It was miserable. Once electricity came on in city i was in a hour long wait for propane and they ran out 4 vehicles after me.

I used a small electric space heater in my water bay. Just make sure it has tip over protection.
I heat the inside of my RV with 3 electric heaters 2 1500 watt and one 400 watt, i dont use any propane, the small 400 watt is in the bathroom next to the vent where the heat for the furnace would be coming out which is also linked to the underbelly nothing has frozen yet at -25C i also use a plywood with foam insulation skirting sealed with sprayfoam and thick plastic on the outside of my windows still lets daylight in the windows and takes away moisture

I put a 1500 watt electric heater under the trailer and ran it when it got real cooled and never froze up at all last winter in Idaho and yes I did have my trailer enclosed òn the bottom .

Just a thought. If you turn your thermostat to Fan on for the thermostat while running the fireplace, you can help spread that heat under the rv, you’re not going to get as much radiant heat as when the gas furnace is on but can help spread and even our temperatures through the space. Maybe even tie a vent into the under cavity to help prevent freezing.
Great tips guys all these things help save from getting those frozen pipes. This will help so many stay on top of the cold weather incoming. Love our space heater.

We love the window by the stove and in addition, a window behind the 'televator' tv. Tall height and large windows are so important to us for full time living!

In cold weather keep a incandescent lamp in the wet bay area for those that don't have a heated bay area.

Thankfully newer RV plumbing uses plastic pipes that are much more durable when it comes to freezing and will typically stretch a bit without bursting. Especially if the water system is not under pressure, I've had mine freeze up completely a few times and after thawing it out have had no leaks. Old school copper piping will split on the first freeze unfortunately. Running the furnace, using portable electric heaters in certain areas and a heat gun can usually thaw things out in a hour or so.
I would use a 75W incandescent light bulb. Not so hot to melt pipes, but enough heat to keep the piping area warm.
I had used an official heat lamp. I got it too close to my black tank valve & melted it!
100 watt light bulb can keep spaces warm. I put one in water cabinet to keep it from freezing.

Should have a 3way conected to your pump so if it freezes you van have a 5 gallon water jug inside the rv you can run the hose to and have water untill you thaw out your pipes

This winter camping video of frozen pipes was great but here is my question. Of course we don't have a GD but a Forest River Hemisphere hyperlite 29rlshl 5th wheel. Looks like you guys had full access to your water lines. I know we have some under our bed, front of the RV. Is that where yours were? Great video!!

Where do you pour your dehumidifier out at? I personally would not want it in my gray tank because it would fill it up too much I would find a place outdoors at least I would think that's what Dexter would do. We've thought about pipe insulation but getting to all the pipes is so rough! If we are connected to full hookups then we'll dump the water down the sink drain
Have you ever heard of heat tape it's like a thin extension cord it comes on with it gets cold we use it here in South Dakota if you had it wrapped on those plastic pipes then wrapped in foil insulation on top of heat tape look it up on TH-cam

Problem is burning large amounts of propane can be very costly, but I guess it's better than major freezing problems. Would be better if you could run your propane system on "fan only", (no gas), to push the electric produced heat from the cabin down to the underbelly.
Probably a smart plug for the heater with a thermometer. That way you can control it with your phone.

You know what works amazing for filing those cracks around the slides??? Foam pipe wrap insulation from a home supply store (HomeDepot/Lowe’s Etc). It’s about 1.50/275/ piece. Depending on the size you get, It can be cut in half and then those can be tucked into cracks. Easy to put in and remove and easy to store!!! Also works great to keep kitty toys and small dropped items from going under the slides.

Tip
If you are fill time and plugged in, Use the propane when it gets cold.
Then if you loose power, your water heater will keep the water heater from freezing in the water heater.
I have a exposed water tank, so I don't even try and keep it warm.
I also push a cheap Styrofoam ice chest over the low spot drains and up tight to the floor, and I havent has a issue with it freezing, but Iv only been down to the lower 20's ish.
That's a great tip! Way to make the most out of the supplies you already have. Nice thinking on the low point drains being covered, you have some great "outside the box" ideas! No pun intended LOL

The one thing you must be careful of is you power usage, If you have only 30 amp service then keep you draw to 20 , If you have 50 amp service -again keep your draw to 30 amps. Keep a safety buffer of 20% for flexibility - The Power chord is not designed for constant max draw and you'll end up burning out the plug.
Also if you are in a park during the winter time and it is full with other full timers power is or might be a problem - use the formula and calculate accordingly
Remember - when the Voltage goes down the amperage will climb - and this is where a lot of people run in to trouble of electrical issues { breakers popping and wont reset } { Fridge heating elements failing } computer laptops charging issues } things of this nature all because of power or poor power supply during the winter. Electric heaters are the worst thing for a rv as they tend to burn out rv receptacles inside the rig -{ this is why using your furnace is so important } you have to balance between power and the use of your furnace putting more load to the furnace, I know this as I use to live full time in a 1988 travel trailer and never had a power issue, but saw others who were in the same park as me have burn out problems and no power...
