  • Here a really rare recording from just 3 weeks after the famous 1956 Newport Jazz Festival where the famous Duke Ellington orchestra made a comeback thanks mostly to the legendary Paul Gonsalves solo in Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue. On that occasion he played 27 consecutive choruses in Wailin' Iterval (the piece-bridge between the two section 'Diminuendo' and 'Cescendo'). Here he plays well 37 consecutive choruses... The longest Gonsalves' solo ever recorded!
Duke Ellington And His Orchestra: Willie Cook, Cat Anderson, Clark Terry, Ray Nance (tp); Britt Woodman, Quentin Jackson, John Sanders (tb); Johnny Hodges (as); Russell Procope (as, cl); Jimmy Hamilton (ts, cl); Paul Gonsalves (ts); Harry Carney (bs, cl); Duke Ellington (p); Jimmy Woode (b); Sam Woodyard (dr). Fairfield, Connecticut, July 28, 1956

NOTE from Paul Gonsalves: "One night in Des Moines, Iowa, a guy in front of the stand made me angry. “’Hm, you, Paul Gonsalves … I don’t think you can play that long like on the record,’ he said. “So I played sixty-six choruses. Some nights I play it and ideas come, but sometimes they won’t.” (Stanley Dance Interview).

Great photos, thanks. Paul GonSAL-ves (say it again, Duke). Such an advanced intervallic concept, grounded in the swing Tenor tradition (add Don Byas), combined with an exotic tonal palette that gave beauty to the overlooked just as equally. Thanks for the wealth, Paul.

I've been listening to Jazz pretty much since the day i was born and i've heard all of the Jazz greats play in some context or other. There's no doubt in my mind, that Gonsalves's influences were Hawkins, Webster and Young.........and in his later years, even Coltrane and as great as these 4 pillars of the tenor saxophone were, Gonsalves is the greatest of them all!!

gonsalves was a good stylist with a great harmonic imagination. he was really brilliant and I really love his playing, but Hawk Pres and Trane are on another level.

How many songs did he compose, whom did he influence,no one knows who he is, other than a tenor player for Duke Ellington.Period!

I was a teenager when my oldest brother, was jamming in the house with his friends. I heard this song and one of his friends and I started dancing and couldn’t stop. This turned me into a Duke fan.

Similar story. It was my older brother that turned me on to the original Newport recording. Thank you for nudging my memory.

Atomic music, even for a metalhead and a man ten years younger than the time Gonsalves play it on a saxophone. Amazing.. this has everything that makes a music fan warm to boiling point! 😍

Nevr heard anyone play quite like Paul, and I've never ben able to work out who his influences were. A unique player and by all accounts a really nice guy.

That trumpet high squealing at the end is just plain mad - just like the icing on the cake of the Paul's extended solo.

I think Duke had a special admiration for this man even with his medical problems and later alcohol. Both Jazz greats.

This man, Paul Gonsalvez, is so incredible, I can‘t find words. I told my familiy to play a solo by PG when they think I am dead. When I don‘t move then, and only then, it‘s the end.

PG saved Duke and the band at Newport with his solo. Life sure has strange twists of fate.

Say what you will about Paul Gonsalves and his influences and influencers and who's better than whom, and someone even said, and I'm paraphrasing, 'ah, all he was was just another sideman for Duke Ellington'...you know, when you use autotype on your phone or computer? Well , on my computer when I type 'Ell' Ellington pops up as a choice. My point is: where is up from the Ellington Band?
The band sounds magnificent-Go Cat!- on this live recording with great clarity and balance and though my favorite Gonsalves' 'Wailing Interval' is the '58 Amsterdam Concertgebauw (a classical music temple, btw) gig this is pretty damn great and I look forward to hearing it again. Thanks for posting!
P.S. I used to hate those jazz polls. The few people who decided to participate deciding the fate of what many people will be listening to. Hmm, there's a parallel around here somewhere.

Influences - Paul said "I admired Lester Young, but Coleman Hawkins was it for me."

+ghairraigh "Bean" was it for me, too. I won't disparage either "Pres" or "Trane" at all. But, the sounds from "Bean" and "the Brute" (or "Frog") still stir my insides. I agree with anyone who says Pres created a whole new style of soloing; he absolutely DID. Even Charlie Christian was taught to play his guitar style from Pres. But, Hawkins "created" the solo tenor sax. And, he stayed prominent at the top of that wonderful pile his whole life.

Gonsalves is probably the most underrated tenor man of his time. He was amazing! I realized this even more when I had the opportunity to take his solo. Believe me, It is harder than it looks!!!

I would love some more information. This is reported to be unissued on Ellingtonia. What is the label/source of the recording?

    • @ReminiscinginTempo
      @ReminiscinginTempo  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

+fudley2003 You're right, this is not on Ellingtonia. I extracted this track from a special number of the Italian magazine Musica Jazz (nr.6/2003), dedicated to Paul Gonsalves. The attached CD is titled "Paul Gonsalves - The Happening" and includes some previously unissued recordings. Try to search on eBay if someone sell it.
