I love your attitude on not giving up when things do not grow well. I feel the same about gardening. I changed my "call name" on here from keep trying to the current one. I still keep trying. However, during the process, I have also learned to give myself "grace in the garden." The time I spend gardening coexist with my alone time with God. Thank you for sharing. May God continue to bless and keep you and yours.

How I agree with you. 75 yrs old here. My knee hurts but I keep weeding and trying. Agree that God is in control no matter what is going on in the news. My husband is not able to help me in the yard but he helps by bringing me things. Really appreciate your video.

OK, I’m in between you two at nearly 74. Totally healthy and vibrant-health, EXCEPT for the KNEES!😭 But I continue on. Last week I got a nine week old Boxer puppy who already has proven beneficial to my health by requiring a few extra daily trips to walk to the back fence of my 1/4 acre. She’ll be great company as I slowly get into this season’s gardening activity.
Have just bounced back from an actual left knee “injury” (stepped wrong and twisted a ligament I guess!) but now the “Rithous-Brothers” have returned to both knees and slows me down but will not let them stop me.😁
Puppy “Bella” will keep me motivated and moving.

I absolutely loved hearing about your life in Colorado and how you found your home in Tennessee and James. I love English gardens on TH-cam too somehow their gardens just appeal to me more. And I have been watching P Allen Smith for many years on TV probably since his first show. His garden's now are way beyond what the average person grows but I like him as a person and have watched his garden show grow over the years and I enjoy his show.
I love your TH-cam channel because the setting is beautiful in Tennessee and you have so many small gardens all over tucked here and there. I love hearing the hens or geese during your show and am thrilled when one walks into view as you are gardening. Also you make tea I have loved tea pots since I was a child I had a beautiful collection of tea pots before having to live in a nursing home I hope everyone that has my tea pots loves them as much as I did. Your video's are beautiful every one of them your voice is soft and relaxes me in fact it is 3:00 a.m. and I am watching your video because I was watching it last night and your voice put me into a restful sleep so I just woke up and your video was on my phone so I am enjoying it now. And thank you for your channel so many watch that are shut in and no longer have a garden and your video's are a moment to dream and see the beauty of plants growing and the splendor of your flowers so from our hearts thank you it means a lot to us. ❤️

You are an inspiration. Thank you for sharing your love of God. My husband said, "I like watching her videos with you. She isn't fake." I too, had trouble growing poppies, snapdragons and ranunculus last year. Poppies never even made an appearance. The snapdragons were spindly and the ranunculus grew to a few inches. But, I get the garden fever every Spring and try, try again. Happy Spring !!

Roasted radishes tossed with oil, salt and pepper is pretty good. I like alot of my vegetables roasted that way. I grew breakfast radishes one year and found them to be so beautiful! They were long and thin and so much fun to pull out of the ground.

I'll second that roasted radishes are great! I also love them fried: grated or diced and fried like hash brown potatoes, or cut in chunks and fried like home fries or pan fries. If you grow the daikons that get large enough you can even cut them like French fries and deep fry them. The typical spiciness of radishes is greatly diminished when you cook them--so even my hubby, who is not a fan of radishes (calls them dirt apples) really loves fried or roasted radishes and even my grandkids like them. Radishes are low glycemic, low carb, so they're a great option for diabetics or those on a low carb diet. The same is mostly true for Turnips.

A good British gardener is Carol Kevin. First her voice is calming like yours . She is very well knowledgeable.
I like how she will plant in a container show you how to mix different plants together.
She has several different types of environment in her yard like marsh, woodland, full sun….
You two are very similar in many ways. But you are more laid back and willing to share many of your different loves. Don’t know if she does that. I think hers is a TV show that ppl have made copies of. Not sure how that works bc I couldn’t find her TH-cam channel.
I enjoy turn you on to get me motivated to get back into gardening. Life can be so hard on your own no one to talk gardening with or plan the day. You fill that push to keep going with gardening thank you. 😊 💐

Gosh, Jeri…you sound just like me! (would you happen to be a Gemini?) Crazy, I too went door to door selling seeds when I was young! (I’m 69, as well!) I lived in Rutherford County for 8 yrs, in HendersonvilleTN for 3, loved the history & all the craft shops back in the 80’s, I paint, garden, sew, do all kinds of needlework, “had” an interest in aquariums from saltwater to fresh water, (I got too old to do the constant water changes), am very diligent & determined once my mind is set on something, have lots of interests & love being around people who intrigue me. You are one of them!
So glad I found you. I love your fences with the rabbit cut outs, that you built your own greenhouse (I’ve only built a chicken coop) love your teas with a good old fashioned recipe, the dishes, the stories. Such a pleasure to follow you. Hugs from middle GA

You have really inspired me and I am going back to watch all of your videos. I would like to think I had one of those beautifully gardened houses admired by children waiting for the bus at our corner. Hopefully at least one child catches the gardening bug. It seems the younger set are just not into gardening. I was inspired as a child by a house I remembered to be a secret garden. It sat way back and up the hill from the street street. I gardened the yard of our Victorian farm house we rescued in 1990. We totally remodeled/restored it and many people walking by and admired the garden. Flower gardening was my passion as was my English artist mom’s. The soil was fabulous even when we first bought it. I miss it still. We moved to a wreck of home we finished redoing from 2008 to 2019. I am not as young as when I did the other garden and I had 30 years and a job to pay for it all but once a gardener, always a gardener. Now I am creating the garden that will take me into my old age and vegetable gardening too. 🌷

Great to her about your faith. I realized when I was reading Samual today, I didn’t know what an ephod was,but with so much info available, the answer was at my fingertips. The plant I’ve been persistent with is a lemon bush. I would be crest fallen when the mini lemons would all fall off, or sometimes, I wouldn’t even get the mini lemons. I discovered chelated iron. Then I took a paint brush and pollinated the lemon flowers. My plant is about 2’x1’. I harvested 8 lemons from that small bush! 🍋

I am still watching this video & enjoying it. When you mentioned living in Colorado as a kid & you & your siblings digging up cactus & planting. I truly related to this. My dad was in the army & when i was a kid, Dad was stationed at Fort Carson & we lived in a new subdivision & next to it was the field as we called it & my 2 younger brothers would go to the field & catch lizards & skinks & dig up cacti for my momma. You could look down our street and see Pikes Peak in the distance. Then my momma had another baby & us 3 kids was so excited & when my new brother was 3 months old, my brother that was almost 2 yrs younger than i was hit by a car & was in a coma about 48 hrs before he passed away. But I still remember how the boys would catch lizards & skinks and have lizard races. I also remember my momma planting batchlor button seeds when we lived in colorado springs.

Your comment about your 80 yr old neighbor reminds me of a little old woman who lived around here, she had to be at least 90yrs. Every week she would put on her old fashioned bonnet and an apron and climb aboard her RIDING Lawnmower and drive it around her very small lawn. It seemed like such an incongruity between her appearance and her MACHINE. I loved to see her! Yes, God is in charge and it is very comforting.

I believe Charles Dowding would tell you that a layer of cardboard under a 4 inch layer of compost would be the best way to deal with that couch grass/bindweed/quack grass. Each year you will only need to add 1 inch of compost to the beds. I’m glad you follow him, too.

    • @JeriLandersofHopalongHollow
      @JeriLandersofHopalongHollow  ปีที่แล้ว

This row that is filled with the grass had 3 layers of cardboard on top of it. The stuff travels to the edge of the cardboard , hits the light and bursts forth. I'm putting in raised beds, about 12 inches, laying the cardboard and then piling the compost and materials on top of that. the beds will then be surrounded by layers of stone. I hope that will end the monsters reign.

I, too, have the "quack grass" problem and the only way I can mitigate it is by putting down black weed barrier and cutting holes for my squash plants. It also prevents the sinister squash beetle from wiping out the whole crop. I once pulled up a quack grass root that was the length of the garden, 40', and a sharpie in width! Downright scary! Good luck!

Is that grass also called Bermuda Grass? That's what most ppl plant for their yards here in the Texas panhandle. I choose to call it a weed and it is awful to keep out of anything!
I have found a product called "Over The Top". It kills grass but doesn't kill or even harm my flowers. I don't use it with my veggies because I try to keep them free if pesticides or anything that isn't natural. This stuff is amazing! I can spray it around my roses or in any of my flower beds and that grass dries up and withers away to the roots!
    There's my little tip.
Looking forward to part 2. 🙂

Jeri…I am curious about the 2 bunny pots on your workbench. They look like covered dishes of some sort. Can you tell me a little more about them? As for radishes…I just eat them out of hand but I did see Lidia Bastianich make some sort of dish with them so good luck with all your radishes. I like to watch Cliff over at Castle Hill Gardens, soft spoken and very easy to listen to as well as learn from. But after a LONG and ARDUOUS day in my own gardens I must admit to a guilty pleasure of watching some thrift hauls and furniture flippers. As you can tell though I wait anxiously for any visit from Hopalong Hollow in hopes of getting a peek at any one of your animals or see what you’re up to in your gardens and of course tea time with Jeri! I always like any glimpse of your other hobbies as well. So, I think that makes me a well-rounded and versatile TH-cam watcher that learns a great deal about a variety of things and I appreciate every visit. As for my gardens here in Michigan…not til April or early May before I can get my hands in the outdoor soil but I do all I can to prop up the houseplant industry after Christmas. Looking forward to part two of your question session and Happy Gardening!!!:):):)

The thing gardening proves is our own resilience and determination. Do we give up or do as our early teachers said, "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again." That's what gardening is. Actually, even if we do succeed, failures will come and we have to start over. That's what's so great about having seasons, another chance to start over, or try again, to increase or change directions, or just change our minds. Gardening is one of the most hopeful and faith proving thing we can do, and the rewards are often multiplied and increased beyond what we can imagine. (Just as scripture says.) Thanks Jeri for another wonderful video. My husband is watching them with me now! He really enjoys your very pleasant voice. We're looking forward to part 2!

Quick story, my first experience "gardening" was with my dad. I was 2 maybe 3. I vaguely remember riding on the back of the plow horse he borrowed from a neighbor, next, of my sister and I walking down the rows planting beans. My dad died in August when I was 3 1/2 so I know it was before then. Next memory was when I was 5 maybe 6. My sister and I planted some watermelon seeds. I remember hearing our elders speaking about "manure" and that it was the same as "poop!" Well, we had a German Sheppard dog, and we had "manure" right out in the yard!! So we buried some of it below our watermelon seeds. Sure enough the seed sprouted! Unfortunately, we planted the seed in an area where our step-dad mowed so we didn't get any watermelons, but I've been a believer in manure ever since. I'm just pickier about which manure I choose. 😁
