This is the most affected I've been by a song in a long time. It's perfectly bittersweet, and show's the Civil War era South in a way I'd never seen before. Not making excuses, not playing the victim. Just showing the cost of violence through the eyes of innocents. Those who's minds are still full of dreams, despite it all. I feel for these children more than I thought I could. And the way the lyrics suddenly stop, leaving only that gorgeous instrumental. Chills. Please make more music. You're all one of a kind.
@@BlastingCompany Very glad to hear it, but please do not rush the music. I wish to see another masterpiece like this, even if I have to wait like half a year or more.
It would seem that way from the lyrics, but the animation would seem to reveal that the kids are in the union. The kid is holding a union flag and the city was pretty industrious, which wasn't all that common in Southern cities during the civil war. Been questioning the disconnect between the two a little bit, but it's a great tune.
@@NeillGuitars pretty sure that's the Stars and Bars (csa), and the south had industrial towns/cities, just not to the same extent as the North. And side note though I'm not particularly sure how to articulate this, but the song is pretty clearly a southern one both musically and lyrically. I haven't ever been able to find anything about it online, but there's a certain sense of "Southern Sorrow" that persists even today from the aftermath of the Civil War. Not to bring any sort of justification either way, but a lot of innocent people suffered during and after the war, and we continue to feel it today. The south was already behind Industrially/economically in 1861, but the war set us back easily another 50-80 years. Add in a good deal of bitterness, spite, and poor planning, and that leaves us in the situation we're in now. The city im in had an unemployment rate of more than 25% for males my age before covid. I have nothing against people from the North, hell I even family in Ohio, Maryland, and elsewhere, but I wish there was more understanding for what the average, working class people here have to endure just to make it, only to be stereotyped as stupid, ignorant, racist, inbred, ect. It hurts sometimes, and I really wish we could all put aside our preconceptions and treat each other as human beings instead of enemies to overcome. " The cities they will burn, And families will crack The hate that drove us from our homes Will drag the living back And limping from the darkness With our hatred in our tracks, A long and lonely shadow there can never be undone" Holy shit.
I read that line as a beautifully dark reflection on the war's legacy of rising confederate sympathies and reactionary racist movements that dominated the south and are still felt today. That long shadow still hasn't been undone to this day.

620,000 Americans died in the civil war. This song is beautiful but it’s like a punch in the gut thinking about that loss of life. Thank you Blasting Company for this gift.
All that death, all those lives lost, for what, a people’s right to subjugate those they see as lesser. So many people, HUMAN BEINGS, lied to, led into a war, to kill their own countrymen, and all for what.
And that's only counting the military deaths. That's not counting those innocent civilians lost in the direct fire, on both sides. Nor the ones lost from disease, famine, and general displacement. Thank you so much for adding such good captions. I just read them closely for the first time, having listened to this song for years. This is my favorite song in the world. I’ve used Spotify to listen to it until now; I only searched it up on TH-cam in order to nick the song file to create my own animatic for it. I had no idea this insanely well-crafted, beautiful music video even existed. It’s absolutely perfect and makes the song hit so much harder than I had ever imagined in my head. This animation has so many different elements and is so painstakingly created, what a glorious labor of love. I’m obsessed. Absolutely my favorite music video in the entire world now. I’m going to study it; what a masterclass in storyboarding, storytelling, the power of filters, character designs, color palettes, animation…. I’m so grateful that I was lucky enough to watch it.
Beautifully morose song. My heart breaks thinking about kids hiding in their basements right now. Just trying to outlive a war, trying to outgrow their ancestors' hatred. I hope he and Candy made it out okay in the end. Thank you so much for this music. You guys might be the only people making this kind of 1800s folk americana. (Kind of like the decemberists but more whimsical). It's really special and never fails to put me in a creative mood.
This is the first song that has made me full on weep. As a history buff and a sucker for unrequited love, you guys have possibly made the greatest song for this sort of genre. Keep up the great work, and excuse me while I go cry some ✨more✨
Just found this song, as a history lover from the south, and a fan of Over the Garden Wall, I love this! It feels nice to see that the brutality of wars like the civil war are being acknowledged more and not treated like glorious battles.
So rare to be blown away by so many aspects of a song. The lines about hate are really what drove this song home for me. Well, that and the musical power this group always brings to every song. Also love when a music video adds to the experience as well!
Years ago I use to watch this channel all the time, sometimes the same video over and over. Came back for some nostalgia and i’m surprised and overjoyed to see this new video, some of your finest work!
I love this song so much, just the animation and the soft vocals... It made me cry quite a bit when I first saw the video! Nicely done! Hope to hear more, I miss your stuff! ☺️
I’ll never get tired of your guys’ sound. Whether it’s grand and sweeping or pensive and soft, like Candy, it always moves me. I just want more and more :) Thanks for making music that can lift a heart in troubled waters.
“The war may lay the lot of us in rows of granite stone.” I *love* this line so, so much - this song is stunningly beautiful, and one of my favorites of yours. Truly amazing.
What an absolute gift. Your music has helped me through a whole lot and this is beyond what I needed. If there is a lord almighty, he’s mighty gracious for allowing me to discover you guys. Well, whatever it was that brought me to your pleasant tunes, I am beyond thankful for all that you’ve given us. Bless you and all that you do.
I think the wonderful thing about this song is that no matter who I show it to, my mom who likes Spanish pop, my dad who likes old country music and aggressive Spanish music from the 60’s, to even my friends, they can all agree that the emotion that hits with the blast of the instruments once the cannon ball smashed into the house, is heart wrenching. The way they fall silent and watch the music videos, and don’t really know how to respond afterward is an experience that I have only witnessed through this unique, fantastical song.
I don't know how to describe it but the balsting company's music is so special to me. It started with over the garden wall from well... overthe garden wall. Seeing someone recognize my instrument (bassoon) was just something I've never seen before. Then there is prelude, the pastorale style just made so much sense for its placement in the beginning of the show. Additionally adelaides trap is fantastically written slowing and speeding down, it really helps to picture a scene. The entire album, sketches of the unknown is amazing. And then there's candy, I've probably listened to this song about 100 times. Although the song is about the civil war (I think do correct me if I'm wrong), it reminds me of marching band and the end to a season, bittersweet memories. All and all I just wanted to say that I just love this music.
You probably get these types of comments a lot, but this is most likely my favorite song. I get goosebumps whenever I listen to this. I discovered this band through Over The Garden Wall, and boy am I begging for more of these.
Just came through on Release Radar from listening to OTGW soundtrack. No song has perfectly encapsulated the feeling of traditional country music or heartbreaking story quite like this one. Excellent work, you should be exceptionally proud.
heard this song on spotify first, and i was like, dang, this is such a nice, cute little song...and then i almost had a heart attack when the big brass came in, and i was absolutely devastated at the sudden lack of lyrics and the images running through my mind...its safe to say that even after OTGW, yall have managed to make me love your music even more :D
Revisiting this as I am taking a civil war and reconstruction class in my last year of college. Not one who cries often but I can always trust this to do it.
For the longest time i thought that ‘public relations dilemmae’ & ‘over the garden wall’ were just made by my two favourite bands with similar names. “Such an odd coincidence.”
This is the best song ever written, and I have dwelled on this thought for a while now. Perfect length, perfect message, everything. Man, y'all need more credit. Dang, I love this song.
Good music doesn't deserve to be on the radio. It deserves to be actively sought out because it's the type of music that only people who truly respect music will appreciate.
I discovered this song about a two weeks ago and since then have listened to it at least twice a day. It would be awesome to hear a purely instrumental version if possible, that would be quite cool to hear. Just to hold us over till your next video
Since it was all tracked live in the room together there's no way to cleanly remove the vocals...but hopefully when this pandemic is over we can get everyone back in the studio together!
Spotify introduced me to you guys, Candy makes my heart headbang bruh idk how else to describe it. It's difficult to put your sound into a genre but whatever it is it slaps. What a hidden gem of a group, thank you spotify recommendation gods
3:55 this moment is so violently emotional, i find myself immediately immersed and start crying, i swear i dont experience this with any other song. Thank you
"The war may lay the lot of us In rows of granite stone" this line hits hard because there are many american cities - north and south - that home these rows of granite stone like maybe the scar is still there. I remember seeing them at Bonaventure in Savanah under the June humidity and the spanish moss almost matching those in Crown Hill in Indianapolis, which were in the middle near a church and surrounded by much more opulent graves.
I made a re-harmonization of "One is a Bird" for a school assignment (I'm in music college), because I love this music!!❤️ Congrats on the new single guys, sounds beautiful, can't wait to hear what's next. 😄
"A life as sweet as candy I may never live to know" Every single time I've listened to this song this line has made me shiver. I haven't been this emotionally impacted by a song in such a long time, it's a work of art. A work of tragic yet beautiful art.

Down to her cellar
Down to her cellar
We sat in candle light
Drinkin her father's wine
Sheltered in darkness
Cold earth around us
That's when the Union came
In veils of stormy rain
We talked about her pa
How she watched him in awe
Preachin the gospel
She was delightful
We heard the thunder fall
Damn near break down these walls
The bottles ringin
Us two just sittin
Outside the cannonballs
Came screamin through the squall
She took to cryin then
I watched the candle dim
And curl and shudder
Afraid to touch her
And as the flame went dead
Dear God, I felt her head
Rest tired upon me
Just breathin softly
Outside the city burned
Lord, it was hell on Earth
As darkness swept aside
That breathless candelight
I felt her breathin
And I started singin
Soldiers they will come,
And soldiers they will go
The war may lay the lot of us
In rows of granite stone
And if I join the cavalry
And perish far from home,
A life as sweet as candy I may never live to know
The cities they will burn,
And families will crack
The hate that drove us from our homes
Will drag the living back
And limping from the darkness
With our hatred in our tracks,
A long and lonely shadow there can never be undone
But Candy is asleep,
In darkness and in peace
And my heart fills the silence with its happy little

@@batrachian149 No, im not a confedetard, they deserved to lose and they are nothing but an embarrassment to America. I'm talking about the Civil War from the civilian's perspective on the Civil War. Not to mention this right now too, being Maryland's perspective since that's whats being shown here.
@batrachian149 This comment proves exactly what the original post was talking about
I first heard the Blasting Company at a farmers market in LA in 2008 or 09. Bought the CD 💛
Currently obsessed with this song. It’s so moving! What genre would you classify this as?
Thank you! We usually just say "folk music" because it gets a little complicated sometimes...
Thank you so much for adding such good captions. I just read them closely for the first time, having listened to this song for years. But for some reason, my eyes almost erupted with tears when I saw "A life as sweet as Candy" with "Candy" being capitalized. And the beautiful cut off before the word beat simply broke my heart. I keep coming back and coming back to this song and I really think you guys may have created the most special song I've ever heard. I hope that doesn't sound too silly or maudlin, but every few weeks I re-obsess over this song and the wonderfully detailed and meaningful scene of intimacy amidst the end of the world. No matter how many times I listen, I still find myself at the edge of my seat with this story, remembering the times I felt in the same shoes. And the choice to have the music video set just before the events of the song? Genius. You people are brilliant. Thank you for a perfect piece of art.
Also I notice the spelling of "G-d" to which I say shoutout to fellow members of the tribe lol.
thank you!!
This song doesn’t have boring moments
I've only just realised something; the man in the church spire who sees the cannonballs has the same hair colour and nose shape as Candy (he even has a similar front parting), and in the lyrics, she mentions her Pa preaching the gospels... I'm pretty sure that's her father in the belfry *that she and the kid see take a direct hit*
The shadows on the wall segment was so genius.
I believe that was Justin's idea! And huge kudos to Peter for making it into a reality
Amen and God Bless the Blasting Company!
G-d bless you too!
TheBreadPirate is not someone id expect to see in this comment section! This is a small world here on the Internet! It's cool to see one of my favorite zeldatubers on one of my favorite songs!
@@elderadult8544 Ayy, nice to meet you Norvik! It really is a small world. I see so many people I know in other COmments Sections too.
Blasting Company has always been one of my favorite bands since I listened to them in 2020 in Over the Garden Wall.
They borrowed such a chilling line from the Nigerian proverb "Soldier come, soldier go, but barrack remains".
Thank you! Hopefully many more to come
The exact and emotional same. What a time.
I dont know what genre to call this but im glad you guys are making music again cause you’re the only place i find stuff like this.
Folk
This video watches like an OTGW episode that takes place during the Civil War. Love it.
Holy shucks they're alive
I love this song so much, just the animation and the soft vocals... It made me cry quite a bit when I first saw the video! Nicely done! Hope to hear more, I miss your stuff! ☺️
thank you! more to come
I can't stop listening to it. Such a sweet and powerful piece.
I’ll never get tired of your guys’ sound. Whether it’s grand and sweeping or pensive and soft, like Candy, it always moves me. I just want more and more :) Thanks for making music that can lift a heart in troubled waters.
This is the prequel of where we gonna leave it
I can't even explain how beautiful this music is, probably my favorite song ever, I will never get tired of it
Buying the new album day one
“The war may lay the lot of us in rows of granite stone.”
I *love* this line so, so much - this song is stunningly beautiful, and one of my favorites of yours. Truly amazing.
The best music I heard ever. I'm from Spain!!! 🇪🇸
This just broke my heart in all the right ways. It’s been so long, and this timing was perfect. As it’s always been. I am so grateful for your music.
Lonely, cold I waited for years and now it's paid off. Thank you Petrojvic Blasting Co.
I've listened to this so many times in the past two days. So good.
Thank you so much for the kind note (and the blessing!). We hope to be able to bring more music to you soon
This is quite possibly the best thing that's come of this horrendous year.
It's certainly been a tough one. We're hoping to release some more before the year is out.
2:38 and beyond has my whole heart
All and all I just wanted to say that I just love this music.
a bittersweet hug in the form of a beautiful song
Dont be mad it took 3 years to find this song. Be glad you fianlly did. Amazing.
The music and story behind this are sad, though great. Reminds of The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. Great song in general. Big fan of your work.
we are big fans of The Band, thank you!
I really want you to know that this song has made my weekend
Very good day for music - great song!
VERY good
This song keeps rattling around my brain case. First heard it half asleep on a spotify playlist and thought it was a dream. I'm glad it's real.
This is beautiful. So happy you all made more music. I rewatch OtGW every Halloween.
we do too! more music in the works...
@@BlastingCompany I love you guys ❤❤❤❤
Your Over The Garden Wall Music is one of the only things that actually makes me cry. Thank you.
This is so original, well written, and just inspiring.
This song makes me cry. I cannot sing the whole song without tearing up. ❤
Absolutely phenomenal.
I knew i was here not in vain. This is marvelous.
P.s. Can't stop listening to it. Truly amazing.
I found this song on Spotify, and oh boy, the joy of discovering this has a music video is inexplicable.
heard this song on spotify first, and i was like, dang, this is such a nice, cute little song...and then i almost had a heart attack when the big brass came in, and i was absolutely devastated at the sudden lack of lyrics and the images running through my mind...its safe to say that even after OTGW, yall have managed to make me love your music even more :D
This was a great surprise. Want to see / hear more.
More is coming!
When these men play, ten thousand years of culture falls from them. What utter perfection.
These guys slapping once again. You guys are awesome!!
This is the best song ever written, and I have dwelled on this thought for a while now. Perfect length, perfect message, everything. Man, y'all need more credit. Dang, I love this song.
No one understands how much I love this song. It may be my all-time favorite.
You gotta put this on Spotify, it's so good
yes, soon! August 14
I Keep coming back. Glad to see this with over five thousand views. Though I need to admit to 2,500 of them.
thank you for the support! Hopefully we'll have new things for you soon :)
This is a masterfully crafted piece of art. You boys should be incredibly proud of yourselves. Thank you for this.
Spotify introduced me to you guys, Candy makes my heart headbang bruh idk how else to describe it. It's difficult to put your sound into a genre but whatever it is it slaps. What a hidden gem of a group, thank you spotify recommendation gods
Thank you for stopping and listening when it popped up
you folks are superfantastic -- you make my heart light...
I wanted to believe youd be back. And my faith was rewarded. 🙌🏻
I've been waiting this for years 😍😍
us too...more music to come!
It’s devastating that no matter how many times I listen/watch this song, it brings me to tears
I think this is my favorite song of yours (which is about the highest compliment possible)
3:55 this moment is so violently emotional, i find myself immediately immersed and start crying, i swear i dont experience this with any other song. Thank you
"The war may lay the lot of us
In rows of granite stone"
this line hits hard because there are many american cities - north and south - that home these rows of granite stone like maybe the scar is still there.
please email us that reharm! we'd love to hear it.
"A life as sweet as candy I may never live to know"
Every single time I've listened to this song this line has made me shiver. I haven't been this emotionally impacted by a song in such a long time, it's a work of art. A work of tragic yet beautiful art.
Just amazing...
i’m on the public bus rn and i started tearing up ,,,, how is it possible for a song to never ever get old
