I've had the 38 inch Ryobi electric riding mower for 6 years still cuts almost an acre and a half on a full charge no problem I've only had to change one plastic wheel and change the blades once well worth the money.
I have a Honda push mower, and a Husqvarna Zero Turn.... love them both. I've had the Honda for a decade and still starts on the first pull... but the rear wheels are bald from use! The Husqvarna is a couple of years old and works great too. But honestly - you're right about the maintenance. Changing oil, making sure you add Stabil to the gas in the fall, get them fired up in the spring, dealing with spark plugs and having to keep a battery tender on all winter can be a hassle. I'll admit - my next mower will most likely be electric. No need to run to the station for gas when you run out. No changing the oil. Much less noise. Almost no maintenance aside from sharpening blades or lubricating some fittings. What isn't to love? No they aren't good for the commercial guys, but for a homeowner who mows once a week they are perfect. Thanks for the review - hope you keep it up with the push mower and yard tool lines. Electric seems to be the future.
Phormify we just bought our first home last year and being in a condo we dont really deal with stuff like mowing our lawn. So last year i bought a 40V 20inch brushless lawnmower from Ryobi and boy i gotta say it is a delight to use and super super hassle free. Only thing to make it better is maybe try to buy one more 40V tool from their line like a weed whacker just to have that extra battery you can use interchangeably between the two tools.
Red Pushpin changing oil, adding fuel, adding stabil & plugging in a battery tender are a hassle to you ? That's sad. I hope you're not raising any boys.
@@joeheskett7225 Well, the few times I used the mulch adapter, it seemed to do fine. The key with mulching is to have DRY grass and a SHARP blade. Missing even one of those and it will be a crap job. Personally, I bag everything.
I bought one and I love it. Low noise, mows great, looks cool, and no run to the gas station for gas or wondering if it is going to start next season. Fast when blades not running.....set on cruise and run around the block, HA.

I used to easily be able to get the back of my lake but this year I get about 95% through and do a second session. Kind of annoying since replacing those batteries will be pricey but I'm milking these puppies to get my moneys worth!
I really like EGO products also; but would not hold my breath for EGO to start making an electric rider of any size. I have the EGO 20" mower, 24" hedge trimmer, the 14" chain saw and the new 575 CFM blower that is awesome.
You know I really don't want to like Ryobi... they are supposed to be cheap, low quality, import tools that won't last. But they keep putting out things like this mower or that awesome garage door opener and they are the ONLY brand which has migrated from Ni-MH to Li-Ion and still use the same battery connections to allow people to upgrade batteries on their old tools. Plus their 18V system has so many tools and options... and they are affordable. I've spent quite a bit on those "black and yellow" tools but Ryobi has really made me consider making a switch just due to the versatility of the platform. You guys should do an entire series on the Ryobi line and speak about all of the options and inexpensive batteries and then give us your honest opinions. I know all tools work well straight out of the box but do people still love them a year or two later?
I don't have any Milwaukee stuff personally, but I know someone who has used them for years and all of the sudden they swapped from one 18V form factor to another V18 to M18 or vice versa.... and they aren't compatible. I think you're right that at least some of their tools did work with a Li-Ion pack though. DeWalt on the other hand does make a conversion kit to allow the old 18V tools to use the new 20V batteries... but the kit doesn't work with all the tools due to the form factor, and it doesn't work with all the batteries either. Dewalt also had an older 12V Ni-Cd line and they have a new 12V Li-Ion line, but of course no adapter made for those. Ryobi has stuck with the same form factor for years and years, and from what I understand their Li-Ion batteries work in ever single 18V tool that is part of that system. I have to respect that - they could probably have made more money be switching to a new system, but they stayed with the same connection and let people upgrade their batteries. That's pretty sweet for Ryobi owners.
Phormify I've avoided Ryobi for 20 years due to mistrust issues I have in their quality. I've bought all of the others and guess what... they break and die too. When Ryobi put out the green stuff... I have literally bought almost every tool including this mower. I find shortcomings with them all but all minor flaws like the LED on the drills is only active while drilling... no pre-lighting or separate light trigger like Rigid.
Supposidly that is fixed on their newest brushless drill. Also it is fixed on my new impact driver. Ryobi is the way to go unless your using your tool a few times each week.
The thing that bothers me too on the 20V max Dewalt batteries is it is just a Marketing thing. I mean some 18V Ryobi batteries register at 19.2 or higher than the 18V. So I would assume a Dewalt 20Vmax probably registers less than 20V same as a Ryobi. So basically it is a way to modify their battery attachment geometry and not piss off their customers by printing 18V on them. If only their customers knew....
Agree - it is obvious that they allow a 20V battery to work on 18V tools adapter so you know their voltages are very similar. That said, I never liked how the older style batteries connected and the newer stuff has more connections to allow for flexibility so that is nice, but it still stinks that you need to run out and replace tools just because the batteries changed. I've given thought to trying to make my own adapter for my old 12V tools, but honestly it isn't worth the time. I can just run out and buy a Ryobi 18V kit when they are on sale as opposed to spending 3 hours in the shop making an adapter - and then I still have to buy new 12V batteries. Basically the older stuff is just disposable. I keep hearing good things about Ryobi - and the price of entry is low enough it is probably worth a gamble.

What is the blade tip speed? How many blades, 2 or 1? The specs on the Home Depot website says 1 blade in one place and 2 blades in another part of the description. Is a mulching kit available?
My father got one of these this summer for $2500 at Home Depot. He has just over an acre of grass and I must admit, this thing works pretty well. It cuts about the same speed as any riding mower you'd use and at just over an acre it still had more than half the charge left. But at $2500.00? It seems a little steep in price for what you can get in the same cutting size in a gas mower. If this ever comes down to under $1500, I'd buy it.
I will buying this mower in the spring for sure. Just don't want to bother with gas and oil any longer. And the reason folks have problems with gas engines is they don't run it out of gas after every use. You do this and you will have a lot less problems with your gas engines period! Small engine repair guy taught me this trick years ago!
I bought one 2 weeks ago for my mother's property in a neighborhood adjacent to mine. Figured if I'm gonna be cutting her grass, I wanted a simple, low maintenance toy. My primary gripe is the delay going from forward to reverse. It seems like it takes forever compared to the Husqvarna 24hp 48" machine I use at home. Also - can't clean the Ryobi with water. I prefer to keep my gear clean and fresh. Also found a random nut lying on the mower deck after cutting the yard. Can't figure out where it goes.
Just had to qualify your comment when you said you thought it would last as long or longer than a gas tractor. Not sure what you meant, but I have a 25 year old Craftsman mower that while it does need maintenance, and I have spent a few grand on it over the years, still works and cuts like crazy. Love love love the idea of electric, I have ryobi tools, and the small 20" walk behind for my front yard, but I can't see spending $2500 to replace my tractor which still works! Like others said in the comments, if they drop the price down to around the $14-1500 mark, I would take another look. But $2500 is way too much, unless it's your first mower. Then it might make sense. All things considered, I'd like to see another review in 4 or 5 years, and hear that it still works like new. Have to say tho I seriously doubt it.
My question is how is the battery going to hold up with a winter break? I mean it’s not a huge deal to replace marine batteries but I wouldn’t want to have to. Does the charger have a tender mode for long sitting?
This looks pretty cool. I like the low maintenance idea. Along those lines if they had just hung the mower off the front with a flip up design for maintenance I would have been all over it in a heartbeat. As is I'm still considering it. One downside on the maintenance is that you have to remove the battery tray to drain/fill the transaxle according to the manual. They recommend a hydraulic cart to take the battery tray out as it weighs like 300lbs. That puts a serious crimp in the notion of getting this for Dad for the reduced maintenance needed.
READ my statement! I don't need to google diddly. Grass clippings are a road hazard just like rain, snow or animals. If you wreck on them you are guilty of operating your vehicle too fast for road conditions. I've ridden bikes since 1978 and I'm cognizant of the fact that MY safety is MY responsibility!
Just wondering how the cut is? Is it an even, level looking cut? I'm a really big fan of EGO. I have the lawn mower, leaf blower, hedger, weed eater and the snow blower. Maybe someday EGO will come out with a rider.
I seriously looked at this at the HD to replace my Snapper rider which is still going 40+ years later. I think the price is a little high, but not too bad, and I try to avoid the first year of anything new. Let someone else be the test dummy. but if the price comes down I'd consider it. I'm retiring the Snapper which is older than me and have hired a landscaper, but back when I had the time I enjoyed mowing my lawn, this would at least reduce the maintenance time.
It would be good to have a little more info. Like how big the yards were that you mowed and how long it took to mow them. You show pictures of the one yard and state it had three bars left when done. But what does 'three bars' mean? How many did it have when full?

Great Review. I actually looked into getting this mower after the first tools in action video about it. I don't think Ryobi is going to find a niche with consumers with this mower since it carries a $2500.00 price tag and gas mowers this size run just under $1000.00 especially since Ryobi has yet to shake their old stigma of being that cheaply priced cheaply made tool line.
Alden Buyer, I agree the Huskvarna lawn tractor I went with is still on the first can of gas (non ethanol) I bought and I've mowed 3 times so far this year.
brandon thacker -- My relatives used to use Makita tools and switched unanimously to RYOBI instead over a decade ago and still use them. No problems out of them at all. Walmart has a gas engine riding mower of this size for around $850. I still would have gladly spent the $2500 for this had I known about it. I hate buying gasoline and transporting it in my car. Even in the trunk the fumes stick around for days. I got an EGO Power+ Self Propelled Push Mower because I didn't know about this one. Maybe next year, as I have two acres at home and about the same at my Grandparents' Homestead too.
Looks ok for flatter yards under 1 acre. For us it needs larger wheels and a wider swath (at least 42") to cut our irregular yard and hilly field. I also suspect that the lead-acid batteries will fail pretty quickly especially if not maintained during winter. Is there a bagger option?
For winter storage would you store the mower at a 50% charge? Most batteries do better when they are in a middle state of charge than being fully charged up or depleted.
In my opinion, lead-acid batteries are way better than all these 18650's they are using in everything that is electric today. Keep a proper charge on a lead-acid battery and it will last you a good 10 years. But even with proper care, these 18650's start to go weak within 12 months and half burn out within 18 months. I know, I bought a Kobalt wireless electric push mower that has these 18650's in them. The first year everything was great. Put it away for the winter, pulled it out to charge it and immediately noticed the battery charged WAY too fast. Then I used the mower and it lasted half the time it normally does. Then the battery started to get REALLY hot when charging. So yeah, stick with lead-acid batteries!
Could you use an arched loading ramp to get this in and out of a pickup? Do you think it'll have any problem with the incline or the deck getting hung up?

I've had one for 2 years and it's still running like new. I have some pretty steep hills, my only complaint is you have to be careful reaching the top of an incline, you have to anticipate backing off on the power or it tries to runaway. The battery life is great, more then adequate for 2 acres.
Two questions: 1) can it tow a utility wagon. 2) can you get bags? Deal breaker for me if not. By the time my cub cadet dies, I will be looking to an E-rider. # TIAcrew.

Thanks for the review, guys. I decided to go ahead and pull the trigger on one of these now that it's finally available here in Canada. Believe it or not, it's actually even more expensive here in Canada ($3,999) dollars than the CDN$ equivalent of $2,500 US$, which is $3,361.87 as of today, plus I had to order it online through Home Depot's Canadian website, which meant paying an additional $199 CDN in shipping. Nevertheless, I'm going to enjoy using this machine, based on what I'm hearing about it.
OK, I received the Ryobi mower, and after removing it from the metal packing frame and bolting on the seat and steering wheel and charging it up, seems to work really well! The mower is capable of cutting quite tall grass with ease, the battery life is excellent, the cruise control is nice, and the steering is pretty darned tight (I see why some say it's 'almost' zero turn). The cutting deck also has a good range of cutting heights. The only potential issue I've noticed at this point is that the cutting tech adjustment lever seems to move on its own if I go over bumpy terrain. Not quite sure yet if this was just my imagination or an actual issue, or if I can tighten something somewhere to eliminate the problem, but I'll report back again on this page with more info as i get it.
OK, turns out the cutting height lever doesn't move on its own. It was just my leg brushing against it when I dismounted that pushed it out enough for it to drop a couple of notches.
I'm in Canada and just ordered one for my mom from Home Depot's Canada website yesterday. The mower seems louder in the videos than what the reviews on the USA Home Depot state. My mom was hoping she could mow around her bee hives without disturbing the bees.
I got 3.25 acres - granted its not all yard so I'm seriously considering getting this. Did you notice they also offer a rm480EX model now, too? So far the only difference I can see is the extended run time (2.5 hrs or 2.5 acres). I'm curious of the actual physical differences, is it just another marine battery in there for the extra $200? Is there space on your model that you can see adding extra capacity yourself? Lastly, how hard would it be to add a hitch for towing normal lawn equipment like other riding mowers? Interesting. I hadn't seen the larger unit. If you grab the manual it lists battery replacement as one of two units. 75Ah our 100Ah. I noticed the description on Home Depot's site actually mentions this is 100Ah so I bet that is the only difference.
@@billcenne7262 If you're using the current briggs BS engines, which come on everything, they damn near need carb cleaning or rebuilding if they sit for even a week with ethanol fuel, stabilized or not. So sick of messing with them for mowers and chainsaws...
I would want it to be Lithium Ion. You could get the same power at quarter the weight. Electric has come a long way and I'm surprised more companies haven't moved into this arena.
I don't mind the price tag, a decent riding mower will run you around that same price. The lack of (what seems like) constant maintenance and the need to take trips to the gas station is definitely worth it. The main problem with this? Availability. You can't find them anywhere (even online). And a call to Ryobi and Home Depot yields the response of "discontinued" "probably be back next year" and "they were only released in select areas." What's the point in that? I guess only "select areas" need to mow their lawns?
I've had a riding mower (sears special 30" craftsman) for 12 years, use it about 8 times a year, uses about 2 gallons of gas a year and no issues. Paid 800 bucks for it. Just now getting to the 50 hour oil change interval. Will probably last 50 years. That being said I would love to not have to store gas and oil, and electric is much quieter and has a lot of torque. My only concerns would be cost of battery replacement and how many full mows /charge cycles before it is required.

My favorite brands of mowers are Honda and Exmark. I use both for my lawn service and have great luck with both of them.

How does this mower work on rough terrain that slopes three different directions at the same time?
Power has never been a problem with riding lawnmowers. Durability is the test of a mower...

They recommend a hydraulic cart to take the battery tray out as it weighs like 300lbs. That puts a serious crimp in the notion of getting this for Dad for the reduced maintenance needed.

What do all the led indicators next to the key mean? The manual does not mention this important information.
I seriously looked at this at the HD to replace my Snapper rider which is still going 40+ years later. I think the price is a little high, but not too bad, and I try to avoid the first year of anything new. Let someone else be the test dummy. but if the price comes down I'd consider it. I'm retiring the Snapper which is older than me and have hired a landscaper, but back when I had the time I enjoyed mowing my lawn, this would at least reduce the maintenance time.
It would be good to have a little more info. Like how big the yards were that you mowed and how long it took to mow them. You show pictures of the one yard and state it had three bars left when done. But what does 'three bars' mean? How many did it have when full?

Great Review. I actually looked into getting this mower after the first tools in action video about it. I don't think Ryobi is going to find a niche with consumers with this mower since it carries a $2500.00 price tag and gas mowers this size run just under $1000.00 especially since Ryobi has yet to shake their old stigma of being that cheaply priced cheaply made tool line.
Alden Buyer, I agree the Huskvarna lawn tractor I went with is still on the first can of gas (non ethanol) I bought and I've mowed 3 times so far this year.
brandon thacker -- My relatives used to use Makita tools and switched unanimously to RYOBI instead over a decade ago and still use them. No problems out of them at all. Walmart has a gas engine riding mower of this size for around $850. I still would have gladly spent the $2500 for this had I known about it. I hate buying gasoline and transporting it in my car. Even in the trunk the fumes stick around for days. I got an EGO Power+ Self Propelled Push Mower because I didn't know about this one. Maybe next year, as I have two acres at home and about the same at my Grandparents' Homestead too.

Looks ok for flatter yards under 1 acre. For us it needs larger wheels and a wider swath (at least 42") to cut our irregular yard and hilly field. I also suspect that the lead-acid batteries will fail pretty quickly especially if not maintained during winter. Is there a bagger option?
For winter storage would you store the mower at a 50% charge? Most batteries do better when they are in a middle state of charge than being fully charged up or depleted.
In my opinion, lead-acid batteries are way better than all these 18650's they are using in everything that is electric today. Keep a proper charge on a lead-acid battery and it will last you a good 10 years. But even with proper care, these 18650's start to go weak within 12 months and half burn out within 18 months. I know, I bought a Kobalt wireless electric push mower that has these 18650's in them. The first year everything was great. Put it away for the winter, pulled it out to charge it and immediately noticed the battery charged WAY too fast. Then I used the mower and it lasted half the time it normally does. Then the battery started to get REALLY hot when charging. So yeah, stick with lead-acid batteries!

I've had one for 2 years and it's still running like new. I have some pretty steep hills, my only complaint is you have to be careful reaching the top of an incline, you have to anticipate backing off on the power or it tries to runaway. The battery life is great, more then adequate for 2 acres.
Do they offer Lithium as an option? They last longer and charge quicker, as well as being allowed in the UK up to 4.0AH.

Thanks for the review, guys. I decided to go ahead and pull the trigger on one of these now that it's finally available here in Canada. Believe it or not, it's actually even more expensive here in Canada ($3,999) dollars than the CDN$ equivalent of $2,500 US$, which is $3,361.87 as of today, plus I had to order it online through Home Depot's Canadian website, which meant paying an additional $199 CDN in shipping.
Nevertheless, I'm going to enjoy using this machine, based on what I'm hearing about it.

OK, I received the Ryobi mower, and after removing it from the metal packing frame and bolting on the seat and steering wheel and charging it up, seems to work really well!
The mower is capable of cutting quite tall grass with ease, the battery life is excellent, the cruise control is nice, and the steering is pretty darned tight (I see why some say it's 'almost' zero turn). The cutting deck also has a good range of cutting heights.
The only potential issue I've noticed at this point is that the cutting tech adjustment lever seems to move on its own if I go over bumpy terrain. Not quite sure yet if this was just my imagination or an actual issue, or if I can tighten something somewhere to eliminate the problem, but I'll report back again on this page with more info as i get it.
OK, turns out the cutting height lever doesn't move on its own. It was just my leg brushing against it when I dismounted that pushed it out enough for it to drop a couple of notches.
I'm in Canada and just ordered one for my mom from Home Depot's Canada website yesterday. The mower seems louder in the videos than what the reviews on the USA Home Depot state. My mom was hoping she could mow around her bee hives without disturbing the bees.

I got 3.25 acres - granted its not all yard so I'm seriously considering getting this. Did you notice they also offer a rm480EX model now, too? So far the only difference I can see is the extended run time (2.5 hrs or 2.5 acres). I'm curious of the actual physical differences, is it just another marine battery in there for the extra $200? Is there space on your model that you can see adding extra capacity yourself? Lastly, how hard would it be to add a hitch for towing normal lawn equipment like other riding mowers?

Interesting. I hadn't seen the larger unit. If you grab the manual it lists battery replacement as one of two units. 75Ah our 100Ah. I noticed the description on Home Depot's site actually mentions this is 100Ah so I bet that is the only difference.

I would want it to be Lithium Ion. You could get the same power at quarter the weight. Electric has come a long way and I'm surprised more companies haven't moved into this arena.

I don't mind the price tag, a decent riding mower will run you around that same price. The lack of (what seems like) constant maintenance and the need to take trips to the gas station is definitely worth it. The main problem with this? Availability. You can't find them anywhere (even online). And a call to Ryobi and Home Depot yields the response of "discontinued" "probably be back next year" and "they were only released in select areas." What's the point in that? I guess only "select areas" need to mow their lawns?
The right rear tire rubs the mower Deck on mine, do you have any issues with that?

i was using Ransomes 3 reel riding electric greens mowers in europe in the 1990's.
I've had a riding mower (sears special 30" craftsman) for 12 years, use it about 8 times a year, uses about 2 gallons of gas a year and no issues. Paid 800 bucks for it. Just now getting to the 50 hour oil change interval. Will probably last 50 years. That being said I would love to not have to store gas and oil, and electric is much quieter and has a lot of torque. My only concerns would be cost of battery replacement and how many full mows /charge cycles before it is required.
