  • South Australia could soon become one of the first places in the world to ban political donations in state elections.
The announcement from the state government this week has reignited a national debate about how our political parties are funded, what donors want from their donations, and how else we could model the system.
In today’s deep dive, we’ll look at what the South Australian Premier is proposing, but also how things work in the political donation hall of fame - the United States.

I like the idea of taking big business out of political donations, but this proposal has some flaws as I see them:
The funding being based on per sitting MP blatantly gives advantage to the party in power- they are in government because they have more seats so they get more money. The opposition party should perhaps get a minimum set amount to be able to properly mount an election campaign.
Next, who is an Independent? Multi millionaire Clive Palmer? So presumably he can afford to run a hugely expensive campaign (as he actually has already done before) with his own money? So will this mean that only the super rich can join politics because they will have the money to run campaigns?
