  • Hi! Today I'm thinning and bagging the apples on my three apple trees. Thinning the apples means that I'll harvest much nicer, larger apples than if I had left all the baby apples on the tree. In order to grow organic apples, you have to foil the pests that are as eager to get to those apples as you are, so I bag my apples to help keep them pest-free. Before I get to work, I'll give you a tour of my mini-orchard where I have 3 different varieties of apple trees: Granny Smith, Honeycrisp and Haralson. Even with the late frosts, it looks like it's going to be a fairly good harvest year so I'm excited for the fall when I take that first bite!

Where do I garden?? In Southern Ontario, zone 5b! And because zones don’t always tell the full story, my last frost date is May 10th & first frost date is Oct. 3rd.

I’m new at growing apples and found your video very informative. Where did you acquire those green fruit bags?

I try to get out there to bag them when they are pretty small - ideally when they are about the size of a dime or just a bit bigger.

@@TheGardeningMeexactly my question thanks!! Mine just finished pollinating so im probably good this week. Birds get mine..or squirrels. I used the bags last year too late when there were only About 10 apples remaining not stolen by animals

@@great-garden-watch Ugh! Birds/squirrels are pretty adept at getting to the fruit. Hopefully bagging earlier will work out better for you - good luck!
