The Gardening Me
Canada
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 7 มี.ค. 2021
Gardening adventures, experiments and inspiration from my Zone 5b garden (and beyond).
Hi! I'm Margaret and I garden on 1 acre in Southern Ontario, Canada - zone 5b(ish) - and have been blogging about my journey since 2014.
------
I started off as a veggie gardener with 4 small raised beds. Over the years, the veg patch slowly grew. Then, in 2021, it went through a major overhaul - new layout, new beds (12 of them!), new fencing and a large ornamental border. My love of ornamentals has also grown - in fact, I've recently shifted from growing a lot of veg with a few flowers to growing a LOT of flowers/ornamentals with a few veg.....just as the garden is always changing, so is the gardener!
My philosophy? Gardening is more about the journey than the destination.

DIY - Installing Drip Irrigation in Two Perennial Borders
Today, I'm finally installing some drip irrigation in two perennial borders. About half of the plants were put into this border earlier in the summer, but they have suffered quite a bit with hot, dry weather spells as well as the fact that this area is on a bit of slope so that water tends to run off of it. Now that both beds are all 'dripped' up, I can finish planting them up - hurray!

Planting up the Street Border with Annuals (I Grew from Seed!) Zone 5b
มุมมอง 1575 หลายเดือนก่อน
A few days ago, I transplanted a couple of trays of annuals that I grew from seed. One of my front yard borders is in transition right now. It was sheet mulched, but there are still enough pernicious weeds (such as bindweed - ugh!) that I need to get under control before I start adding a bunch of perennials to the bed, so this is a great opportunity to play around with annuals. Planting Hardy Chrysanthemums - Will They Come Back Next Year?
If they burst onto ground will the plant spread and grow where seeds fall??
Sweet peas are better to direct sow in the garden. That's the easiest. Just do it 1-2 weeks before the frost ends. Just a suggestion.
I've never had luck with direct sowing sweet peas - but I'll probably try again. Thanks!
If you let the soils in the rolls dry a little they are much easier to separate. I am a retired commercial seedling grower and found this method saved a lot of root damage
I'll have to try that next time - thanks for the tip!
Do you spray or apply anything on the open cuts left on the tree as a way to stave off any disease? Would spraying alcohol or bleach harm the tree?
Other than disinfecting the pruners that I cut with, I don't use any type of sealer or spray on the actual wood - the cut will heal on it's own. Sealing the wound was something that was often done in the past, but they have since found that it does more harm than good - here's a link to U. of New Hampshire extension site that talks specifically about that: extension.unh.edu/blog/2019/07/should-i-cover-large-pruning-wounds-tree-wound-dressing Hope this helps!
Why do you need 1/4 inch tubing for each arborvitae? Can you just lay and stake the 1/2 inch pipe next to them and use a 1 gallon per hour emitter directly into the 1/2 inch tubing? I just planted 11 3 gallon arborvitaes in a straight line and thought I could just emit the water directly from the 1/2 inch tubing.
Using the 1/4" drip in a circle near the dripline provides an even amount of water to the entire root ball. Unless your tree is tiny - i.e. a sapling - a single emitter located next to the trunk may not moisten the entire root ball & reach those feeder roots that extend beyond the canopy, especially as the tree grows.
can't we just pick them off to dry in the sun? Thanks for explaining the fertile part.
If you don't let them dry on the plant, they may not be mature enough when you harvest & you could end up with germination issues. I've never tested this on Black-Eyed Susan vines, though - it may be fun to try that with a few seeds and see what happens!
Beautiful!! Im taking so many notes from this video. How did your seeds do from William Dam? I am thinking about taking a trip out there this week.
Hi! Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner - just got back from a couple of weeks away yesterday. I always have really good success with my seeds from William Dam! Of course, seeds are living things so there are the occasional duds, but those are few and far between.
I just found you after searching for seeds and I am SO glad I did! I am definitely doing a drip next year because although I ❤ gardening, I hate watering and especially hate my water bill.
Thank you for the lovely comment!! Drip really doesn't take that long to do (once you get going!). I generally tackle one area at a time but it never fails that I end up saying to myself once it's done - "Why didn't I do this sooner" - lol. Do let me know how it works out next year!
Did you ever do an update to this video? I can't find it and i would love to know how they faired. Did they root when you had very little root? How did the tiny ones do? And what happened to the 3 you potted up?
Hi! I haven't done an update video yet - I should put that on the list! Almost all survived - I think I only lost one. Surprisingly, the ones in the pots grew better than those in the ground. I'm thinking it was the root competition from the arbs, esp. as I don't have drip in that area yet. At this point, they are all doing quite well. Hope this helps!
maybe your variety is expensive, but Botanical Interest sells 20 seeds for $2.69
I got mine from Baker Creek - it probably was the variety. I'll have to check them out at BI - thanks!
@@TheGardeningMe cheers, i can't wait to have a full wall of these flowers next spring.
I am getting ready to transplant mine into regular seedling trays, and or cups. I did not know there was a 2n step for adding more soil. I don't understand why you are adding more soil.
Adding more soil is the equivalent of 'potting up' seedlings. By doing this, you can keep them in the seed roll and there's no need to pot them up into cups or seedling trays. They will go directly from the seed roll to being planted outdoors. Hope this helps!
Correction: The new hole puncher that I purchased (seen @ 12:57) actually DOES fit the 3/4" tubing! I realized later that the blue bit around the opening is an adapter for 1/2" tubing. The adapter is removable so that you can then use the tool for 3/4" tubing.
Thank you, I've been trying to figure out where the hell the seeds were!!
They are tricky to find!
1:50 1:51 I purchased a hanging pot with Lemon Star and Orange Wonder Thunbergia in it. Birds made a nest in it and the plants were not looking well. After the birdies flew away, I cut the plants almost back to the dirt. I am happy that the plants have rebounded and look great. I decided to research seed saving and discovered that they are Black Eyed Susan Vine. I didn't know! Now I am hoping to harvest seeds for next year. How deep should the seeds be planted? And thank you so much for such a clear, detailed video. I have subscribed! 😊
Hi - I'm glad that your plant recovered! You can sow the seeds around 1/2" deep. Just make sure they are well covered as they do prefer total darkness to germinate. Good luck!
Well, I am not a happy camper. 😢 No seeds for me. I guess I will purchase again next year and try again.
@@jancooley2630 If they didn't generate any seed, those varieties may have been sterile - do try again next year!
Did the Fritillaria look as advertised? I’m debating on purchasing a bag of them with my next order. 🌷
They did - sort of! They were a lot smaller than I was expecting, but still very sweet - not sure if they will spread, but I'm hoping so 😊
How are the bulbs and bare roots doing? I just ordered a large quantity of fall planting bulbs ❤
All of the bulbs did great and so far so good with the bare root plants, although the peony is still pretty small and has not flowered yet. That's awesome about your fall bulb order - you will be so glad you planted them come next spring when they all pop!
Very nice ❤❤❤❤
A lovely video, Margaret. Lots of colours, and varieties. Something for everyone here...🥰
Thank you John!
I like your combination of the Karley Rose grass and the Sunseeker Salmon echinacea. That self-seeded nasturtium is a beautiful colour too. Bonny
Thanks Bonny! I love that combination too - I need to move the echinacea a bit further out, though or it may get swallowed up by the grass!
I have a heliopsis that is the smaller type and i haven't noticed any self seeding. I'll keep an eye out for it, and hope it's sterile lol. Don't know the variety!
If you find out the variety, let me know - I would love to have a better behaved one in the garden!
At the first glance I thought it was a berry
😆
I have tons of hollyhock seeds from my plants this year but can I use them if the leaves had rust?
The seeds should be fine - just make sure that they are 'clean' (i.e. you remove any plant debris such as petals, etc.). Good luck!
Hope you trimmed some of those flowers and put them in a vase. They are so pretty.
Yes I did! In hindsight, should have given some to my neighbours too 😊
@@TheGardeningMe 😍
I've got one of those heliopsis in my yard that self-seeded from my neighbour's garden. As well as Goldsturn, gooseneck loosestife, and Japanese anemone, bleeding hearts. Bonny
Oh boy, that's quite the collection of wandering plants from your neighbour 😬
@@TheGardeningMe I like them all. I just remove them if they grow where I don't want them.
I have it in my garden as well. I took it out in some places and put the plant in other places around town where people need some plants 🌼🌻🌼
It's a great example of right plant, right place - for that border, it was just a bit too spready for me!
looks good! I got some of my biggest bulbs so far, the mild winter made them come up from late Jan, the long growing season seems to have done them good.
That's awesome! I agree about the weather - even with the rust, all of the varieties have great sized bulbs this year.
Getting these seeds
Hi Margaret🙂 What a GREAT video review of the festival! Stephanie actually happens to be a cousin of mine, and she is carrying on a family tradition in agriculture (in the non-traditional field of lavender) with her husband and young son. She is an intelligent and highly educated person, and could have gotten a high paying job in the corporate world, but chose the challenge of farm life instead. The name of her company - Tullamore (Tull-a-more) Lavender Co, is a nod to the heritage of our ancestral farm in the old hamlet of Tullamore, Ontario. Tullamore used to be a thriving village at one time - a hub for agriculture, and an overnight stop for folks on horse and buggy going north from Toronto to Mono Mills, Orangeville, and points north. Much of the area has been swallowed up now by new housing, commerce, and industry. So sad for those of us that have fond memories of those days "out in the country". Thanks again, for this wonderful video!🥰
Hi John - thank you for the lovely comment and backstory! I know exactly how you feel - I'm always so saddened when I see a farmhouse, that was once a family home, all boarded up with a huge billboard out in front advertising the 'wonderful' housing development/apartment building that will be going in its place. Truly love the fact that the company was named after a town with such personal meaning - it really does make it that much more special❤
I grow the Munstead lavender. Bonny
I'll be adding that one to my garden for sure!
I searched the internet for the information that you have given me here! Great video and thank you. It is concise and precise information shared with such a natural approach. I really enjoy garden videos where the person delivering the information are natural, like yourself. 😃🌺😄🌷
Thank you so much!
I have tons of those muslin bags from Amazon that I use for herbal tea. Great idea for seed saving!
Love multi-purposing!
Oh love them all, carlotta is adorable,oh mother of the bride as well. Oh I may as well stop cos all sweet.
Totally agree - it's hard to pick just one!!
**Correction - The last plant that I spoke about (the one without a tag!) is actually a delphinium, not a hardy geranium. I plucked it from a display of "hardy geraniums" and since the foliage looked similar to my eye, it never even occurred to me that this pot was in the wrong spot. Thank you to Roberta for the correct plant ID :) UPDATE: After a return trip to the nursery, I found out that this is in fact a 'Guardian Blue' delphinium. On that trip I, of course, purchased three ACTUAL hardy geraniums and transplanted the much taller delphinium from the front edge of the border to the middle, lol!
Garden centres are my happy place! Thanks for sharing 😊
Yes! Even though my wallet sometimes protests 🤣
Such a variety of stuff! Thanks for the tour :)
It's one of the bigger centres in the GTA, that's for sure!
I love to go to nurseries and garden centers 🌸🌱🌝👍
So fun!🌺
What great explanation on everything you have shown. I always buys so many seeds and forget to do anything with them.
Thank you! It's so easy to get carried away with seed shopping, isn't it? 🌻
I can never find the seed pods, i have 5 different colors
I'm not sure if there are varieties that are sterile (so they don't produce seed) but even on the 'normal' varieties, it seems that most of the flowers don't end up with a seed pod, so you have to really search. I would give the plant a once over whenever you are near it - good luck!
looks great! the rabbits in my yard seem to be eating the grass and grass seed, left all my plants alone for now, even the lettuce! They haven't even touched the amaranth or celosia... maybe they're just really well behaved rabbits...!
So lucky! Your rabbits should come over to my house and give mine a few lessons 😉
Got to go back and see what Veronica you grew. I’m thinking or ordering the plant or seeds. The dusty miller looks great!

Good morning, looking forward to the update. 💚🌱🌸

Love the display! Can’t wait to see when it grows out! I love coleus and ordered one of the same one you have!
Thank you! Coleus are amazing, aren't they? And there are just so many gorgeous ones out there to choose from!
the rex begonias, wow. My gryphon from seed died unfortunately, am jealous of yours!
Oh - that's too bad! It's definitely a finicky one to grow - we'll see how it does over summer.
I have never grown them before either. I have invested in the actual long stringy bulb/root and seed in different areas of my yard. I am in zone 9A in Northeast Florida so I guess we'll find out...... Such a beautiful flower, I'm really hopeful but at the same time realistically skeptical.
Yes! Definitely give it a go. I can't tell you how many times I've tried something that was a bit iffy and it ended up working out. Best of luck!
@@TheGardeningMe thank you again. Happy gardening
Hi Margaret, those Rex Begonias are gorgeous! Wow! Your front porch display is beautiful.
Thank you!
You are welcome. My plant shopping list just got longer. 😊 I know it’s only mid-June, but I’m already wondering if they could be overwintered in the house or a warmish basement or garage?
@@joettedignanweir6893 I would definitely give it try! If the temperature doesn't get too cold (i.e. below 10C/50F), they may do just fine in a garage with a window. In my case, I need to bring them inside - the basement is perfect because it stays at 18C/65F all winter. I had good success overwintering the burgundy edged one in the video but the other two I had last year, not so much, but I'm planning on trying again with all of them this year :)
The peas are direct sow and planted way too close. They should be 1-2” apart. You have a bunch in clumps. But the marigolds look awesome. Can you update on those?!
The sweet pea roots were so intertwined that I decided to plant them in groups instead of trying separate them further and maybe killing them...maybe I should have risked it. Marigolds are doing well!
good to know about the snail roll :) My sweetpeas are also not growing super well lol. 1st year for me here with them!
I really feel that I have to find someone local that has success with them so that I can figure out what I'm doing wrong!
@@TheGardeningMe do we put sweetpeas out the same time as regular peas/snowpeas? It was a bit later than that for me.....
@@matchynishi I sow regular peas directly into the ground, usually in mid-late April, and have always been successful. It's rather unusual to see them being started indoors and then transplanted. When it comes to sweet peas, though, everyone seems to start them indoors, which makes me think they are quite a bit slower growing than eating peas. I have a feeling I started them too late this year.
@@TheGardeningMe I h ave too many slugs/snails/mice/squirrels/idek what that eat both the direct sowed seeds for any beans/peas, sunflowers, squashes etc, so I have to transplant all of them. But I agree with you, next year I'll tray again with starting earlier.
Stairway to heaven, lol That’s exactly how I react when that happens!😅
😂😂Not the first time that's happened (and won't be the last, either!)
Terrific method I’m definitively trying this method of dahlia storing ! And ❤ The Disney World bag
Ha! We're big Disney World fans at our house.
@@TheGardeningMe omg so are we! Nice to see that we aren’t the only household with excessive WDW merch bags 😂
Looks so wonderful! Where do you find your seeds?
I get my seeds from a wide variety of sources, both in Canada and the U.S. One of the best local sources is William Dam Seeds. They have a huge variety of everything - annuals, perennials and veg!
