    Definitely guilty of trying to muscle more revs on it. I get irritated when there are clearly patches of oil scattered out on beat up house shots and I can’t get back to the pocket from the same spot constantly, so I get around it and really try to rip on it. Just makes matters worse. Then I slow down and just try to come up the back of it nice and easy and it reads three times as much and misses the head pin left. Clearly new to bowling and I already feel like I should write a book on what not to do lol. Thanks for the info and keep the videos coming!

    This is a lot of good information. Modern bowlers are learning to power the ball and aren’t learning any of the other skilled traits needed to adjust.

      Luke Rosdahl natural respiratory pauses allow for the author to hone in on key words, phrases, bullet points during a lecture (formal or informal) as well as allowing the audience to receive and retain the information provided.
      This occurs naturally during a discussion or debate but can be overlooked when needing to distribute information quickly.
      You do this often with your other videos when you add the puns and jokes but with this video is was all thriller and no filler. I dug it and appreciate the continued shared knowledge for our sport!

      Most of the time I write video scripts and build the video around the script, but I think in these cases, I need to pick the video I want to show and build the audio around it so that I don't have to have so much going on all at the same time. I could have isolated like 5 of the shots in this one and gotten really in depth on them and probably had a better video, but most of the time I'm on a pretty strict schedule.

    I really like the miss demonstrations! Drills like "Cannot Leave Until You Shoot 250" teach you how to chase and maintain continuation. The progression from earlier, less responsive balls and higher balls speeds, to longer, more responsive balls and lower ball speeds is really hard to teach. Especially when it's hard to see when balls are burning up or just missing the mids, like when you miss into a puddle.

    Just found your channel! Biggest takeaway so far is learning to see what the ball does on the lane and through the pins, and what it tells you about the shot!
    Will you do a follow up video with maybe some stats (eg. breakpoint board AND length down lane, impact board/point, etc.) and maybe a glossary of the terms you use (what does "too deep" and "too forward" mean)?

    • @LukeRosdahl
      @LukeRosdahl  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I've got a whole bunch of videos, some with the board box, some instructional videos, so just keep watching and you'll have the questions answered!

      @@LukeRosdahl Board Box videos are cool! Maybe I didn't articulate my question well, though.
      Bear with me, but I was getting the impression that we need to be aware of the ball shape/reaction
      all down the lane, so wouldn't an extra metric like Breakpoint Length be as important as the
      Breakpoint Board?
      Also, which videos would you recommend where those "too deep" and "too forward" are explained?

    • @LukeRosdahl
      @LukeRosdahl  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@granz58th Yes but a lot of that stuff has to do with the pattern that you're on. Too deep just means you're too far inside, or for a righty, too far to the left and making the ball try to cover too many boards for that ball, the condition, or the stage of transition. Too forward means that the ball is going too forward on the backend, meaning it starts rolling in the direction the ball is traveling rather than the direction it's rotating in.
      All these metrics are available through ball tracking software like SPECTO but most places don't have that, and I'd warn against getting too attached to numbers in a game like bowling. Gaining a feel for the game outside of the numbers is critical to really understanding it. The number of variables and the standard deviation in bowling is off the charts, so you use the numbers to supplement, not to determine or start with.
      More mathematical people usually have a lot harder time with bowling because they try to quantify and lock things down that just can't be measured consistently. Trying to make sense of bowling mathematically will just leave you extremely confused. You have to learn to develop your eye for ball reaction because you won't have all the numbers and data live with you while you're bowling.

      Oh, and suggestion: if you have the right to use PBA tour footage, it might be
      really cool to break down certain pivotal shots from TV, and then explain by the
      ball shape why it was more likely the wrong ball or shot choice RATHER than shot
      execution?

    Its funny that you mention high rev bowlers struggling with carry. I have noticed this personally as well especially for two handed bowlers. I dont hate two handed bowling itself, I hate some of the people that do it and act all that. Bowled on a sport shot league and the kids that average 10-15 pins more than me on house averaged about 20 pins less than I did on sport shots.

    yes i think i learned something.. i am playing with way too much strength and after 8-10 games i'm done.. sweaty and exhausted. My carry is good most of the time.. but as you said the best carry i get when my balls are moving in a large arc rather than a short snap.. thats probably why most of the times when theres some oil on the lanes my motiv trident abyss works the best.. because i can trust it to make a large move and because of that i throw it a lot smoother i feel than my phaze 3 for example.. my phaze 3 only works really well if i throw it inverted (two hander with Oval inserts so i flip the Ball that the pin is inside of my hand instead of over my fingers.) throwing it normal its too late and sharp most of the time and will not make any move when thrown straight through the oil.
    With my electrify i can stay very much on the right and play the lanes straight down and that ball also helps me keeping my speed down because if i throw that one fast like i tend to sometimes it will not make any backend move.
    So the key seems to be just like you said luke. Throw it smoothly.. dont muscle it and dont try to force it too hook because it only makes it worse. ^^
    Great Video. ;)

    I think a large amount of my bowling problems are from trying to do everything "right" and force a prettier ball roll to happen, when if I really relaxed everything and am nice to the ball I might spin it like Butch Soper in slow motion, but probably be a lot more consistent. Though I worry about that working if there's any volume on the lane at all and am I just overthinking bowling again now?

    Im just gonna keep shooting ideas to you till I meet you or just illustrate them myself.
    Love this video combed with the board box in order it really helps put it all together.
    Couple questions and ideas.
    Mental would tell you that if you are leaving single pins you are close and lots of people talk about "the perfect looking shot" I think more in depth explaining how to combat that voice in your head while continuing to make adjustments would be kinda cool. Talking through what you see and what you changed on the next 1 ball.
    Another thing you mentioned was examples of people who can hang even though they dont have that rev rate or crazy power. (Norm Duke, Tiff johnson ect) I think one of the traps bowlers get into myself included is trying to be X bowler. You have talked about how you have to figure out what works for you, but I think people can sometimes even watch you and feel wow if I just put this here and do the same hand motion I will become X. That's not the case I have watched all of your videos and things I figured out ultimately came down to figuring out how my body mechanics work. Its a good blueprint but everyone should try to be themselves and feel as comfortable as possible. Its like trying to make dinner for an unknown person, most people default to what they like and hope it sticks.
    I only have been at this a year and have a 180 average I am proud of everything else will come with practice and studying but mostly repetition. One of the questions I have for you is if you could break the process of when the ball hits the lane into 4 parts what would be the most important? You mention people saying they hit their mark then bad carry but in my mind these are only parts of what it takes to throw a great ball. hitting the mark is like one out of eight of the things that help a "Great ball" actually strike. Why do you think that its what everyone that is to the mid to lower level say is the only part of the game? (maybe explaining the difference between a house bowler and a tournament bolwer)
    I'm just gonna keep shooting ideas to you till I meet you or just illustrate them myself.
    All in all I rambled a lot in this comment but I always look forward to watching yours and angels thoughts on X subject highlights of my weeks! keep killing it and repping Kansas City well.

    • @LukeRosdahl
      @LukeRosdahl  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The mental game thing is a great suggestion, it's just hard to get on video . . I think I'm going to do some where I just talk at the camera. I know that's not as interesting, but sometimes the video distracts from what I'm talking about. I know it wouldn't be quite as popular, but I know the die hards would love it!
      You've definitely got your head on straight, you already get the concept of what's going on. You MUST be yourself, you have to figure out how to take what you naturally do and refine it, not try to copy someone else. Authenticity will always prevail. Look at the greats and those who are doing well now. Earl Anthony looked terribly uncomfortable, he was stiff and robotic, but he just didn't miss and he knew how to BOWL. Walter Ray does virtually everything wrong mechanically, and leaves flat 10s all the time. He just never misses them and beats the pocket to death. Norm Duke is 5'5", very few revs, but he's got the softest touch in the game. Belmo has perfected the 2 handed style despite the hate. Buttuff is awful to watch, but he understands reaction shapes. Simonsen is a mash up of all of them, he does absolutely anything he has to do to knock the pins down, he had it tough growing up and that made HIM tough.
      People naturally want to deflect blame and criticism, instead of seeing a shortcoming in themselves or in what they do, they want to place blame elsewhere so that people won't see them negatively. You always have to work on you first, and what you'll find out is that when you search for what you're doing wrong, you're going to find a lot more than you probably thought if you're being honest and objective. If you swear you're doing everything right, and aren't succeeding while others are, you need to find out why, not make excuses, and most bowlers want to make excuses.
      I THINK I made a video a couple months about a beginners guide to tournaments or something, you might scroll back and look for it. I enjoy your comments, you seem really into it, you already are seeing the right things and asking the right questions. Keep it up!

    • @MalcolmStrick
      @MalcolmStrick 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LukeRosdahl Thanks for replying,
      I 100% agree being yourself and just tweaking and just getting better at the things you are not good at is just simple conditioning and training in athletes. I would love to hear your thoughts of are bowlers athletes of the same caliber as traditional sports as a former athlete I see the similarities. I always thought Walter ray was super weird but he always knocked the pins down. Norm duke is just the craziest thing and still continues to have success at his age with the kids that have all the power and rev rates. I think simonson being able to do everything from backing up the ball and strike and convert HARD splits is so impressive, slow fast, crazy axis tilt, up the ball side ball ect. I actually hate that he is in the same time as belmo because hes so good and young just has giant wall that is belmo he struggles with. Belmo well just this generation of GOAT.
      I think many people are not honest and are not willing to struggle to figure out how to play out of their comfort zone. For example I hate playing over 20 because its uncomfortable I feel like my miss room is much smaller and I dont get the ball out enough or even slow enough to make that happen (mostly due to ball return) but sometimes it takes that in certain houses or patterns. One of the things I tell myself lately is to be more lax about it and get better at it even if I shoot 350, everything is practice.
      So I actually have watched that video as I was preparing before Covid to go to the open and bowl an PBA Regional Event. Unfortunately covid happened and made that impossible so just pushing till next year when hopefully everything is safe again. I did use the video for 6 sweepers I bowled and the concept of training the pattern in practice. It did work and I was 50 pins from cut. every sweeper after that was rough due to some mechanical inconsistencies and people coming out of the covid hibernation from a long time off. I really liked that video though.
      I think there two ways to kinda do the mental video one you could just sacrifice a league night and actually film it best you can there or just show footage of you just throwing shots down the lanes in practice and talking about what adjustments you make on ball 1 and 2 because on certain pin variations you actually can get info off ball two if you leave a five pin, 3 pin, 2 pin etc. I would be happy just to hear your thoughts on it. I talk a lot with my teammates about it some of them get really frustrated about things (as do I sometimes we are all human) but I always tell them to throw the ball if its a good shoot great 12 more times If its not tell me why you think it was a bad shot and if I am watching I usually can see it and you keep doing that until they tell me immediately what happened. (Buddy system) We all are on a fun journey and it will have bumps and bruises but as long as you are improving at your rate and having fun who cares ya know?
      Another video that might be interesting that everyone for the most part would be interested in is how to approach league night because many people think of it as totally different things and are there for different reasons then moving up competition ladder to (Tournaments, Cash Leagues, Doubles, Teams ect) I really enjoyed your video explaining how tournaments are and all the other side events. Fun stuff
      Sorry for the wall of text.
      Again always love the channel, keep it up! Ill hop in a stream one of these days lol.

    TH-cam thought I needed this so here I am from the future but this was cool to see anyway. One of the guys I work with told me that if he could carry like me he'd be on tv lol. I have 0 hang ups about changing balls for a better shape or fit for what I'm bowling. One person has told me "you don't change balls you just move your feet" like mf sometimes the ball is just wrong and I know full well I can't take my hand out enough to only move my feet because I don't have that fine of control over my bowling and may never but I know my game lol. I just bowled a no tap the other day and saw someone who played deep had a ton of rev and nice angle with one of the zens and just couldn't make adjustments well and when something didn't work just got frustrated.
    The two times I've felt legitimately screwed were dumb luck instances where I've had a pin get tapped one side then another and go from a fall position to standing back up or one time I had one get knocked and then another hit it from a wobble and simply stabilized it when it was going to trip. I've had a few sliders too but that's also less common and I feel less cheated by those. I'll usually just joke about a bad rack or getting screwed but I know when the ball leaves my hand if it's a good one or not. Sometimes it even feels good but I throw a little off and just gutter it lol.
    I'm working on filling out my bag with balls that work for me while simultaneously working on taking me out of the ball by relaxing more (really hard to say the least) but the combination of tools available means that I have so many options to get better whether it's tape to shape up the thumb hole or protect a finger or whatever to allow a cleaner release.
    Anyway this is a gem here that could do a lot of people some good.

    Luke, What does "Carry" mean for the average bowler?
    I record every game I bowl and what ball I used.
    I have spread sheets tracking the long term performance of each ball in my arsenal.
    How many 200's I have bowled with a ball, the amount of games, the % of 200 games, # of clean games, highest and lowest games and total open frames.
    This allows me to understand which balls produce the highest long term average for me.
    Is long term average with a particular ball(s) indicative of "Carry" as you call it?

    • @LukeRosdahl
      @LukeRosdahl  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it's the percentage of pocket shots that knock all the pins down basically. It's frustrating to watch people that think they should strike just because they hit the pocket because they don't pay enough attention to HOW they hit the pocket, so this video was intended to show people how to hit the pocket better so that they can improve their carry percentage.
      Something else for you to track would be first ball average, if you don't already. First ball average is basically the same as carry percentage, so if you have like a 9.1 first ball average pinfall for one ball, and an 8.7 first ball average with another ball, your carry percentage with the first ball is higher, so you carry better with that ball. The actual scores with that ball can give you skewed numbers based on possibly making a ball change mid game, missing spares, etc.

    • @nordattack
      @nordattack 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LukeRosdahl Funny that you mention the "First Ball Average."
      I have a ball I use for No Tap competitions. This ball virtually gets 9 every time it hits the pocket and is so mild and controlled that I can hit the pocket every time.
      I can also make all spares with it. But the ball rolls very flat so it has difficulty striking unless I make a very precise shot. But it rarely leaves a split or something bad.
      So it is my "Safe Ball" for when things are tricky and more powerful and dynamic balls are just leaving messes. I would guess it has the best "First Ball Average" despite not having the greatest strike % overall.

    • @LukeRosdahl

      It should, but you don't really want or need to cup your wrist, that can actually reduce your rev rate and revs because you could be trying to muscle the ball. Watch some videos of Michael Fagan, he actually bends his wrist backwards in the backswing before letting gravity work and rolling it off his fingers, he gets some good revs doing that. Cupping your wrist is kind of an old school idea/philosophy that really ends up being kind of backwards once you learn more proper/modern techniques.

      Luke Rosdahl 100% agree here. I’m trying do more of that now, as wrist pain (from years of cupping wrist the whole backswing) has really taken its toll. Relaxing the wrist definitely loosens up the forearm muscles and allows for a more relaxed swing.

    I noticed you talk about soft hands a bunch, what exactly does that mean, how exactly do I even accomplish that, when I do what my brain thinks of soft hands the ball seems to hook more and snap harder, is there a video that really explains this in really struggling with this concept, thanks in advance

    • @LukeRosdahl
      @LukeRosdahl  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually it really will transfer more energy to the ball which will make it more aggressive overall, so that's not a surprise. It's just like if you keep soft hands on a golf swing, the ball will go further. If you get grabby at the release, it's going to kill the ball's energy and make it labor and be flat most of the time. Basically it's just don't grip strongly with your hand, hold the ball as softly as you can and still hold onto it, and catch it with your fingers at the bottom, don't try to hook the ball with your whole hand, just let it off. Watch EJ Tackett and Verity Crawley as a couple great examples of the idea.

    • @LukeRosdahl

      Probably just means you're playing too deep on the lane, 10s are usually from the ball entering the pocket too late, so moving a few boards right would help the ball start hooking earlier and hopefully get rid of those.

    What does being soft with your hand mean?

    • @LukeRosdahl
      @LukeRosdahl  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Means not trying to grip it too hard, sometimes when people muscle up, it's like gripping a golf club too hard, you want to just be softer and more relaxed with your hands and not try to muscle it so much.

    Can the pattern your bowling on hurt pin carry? Last night at my men's league the pattern was very slick when it normally isn't. Everyone had to slow down there ball speed to get any hook 2 to 3 mph for some. I slowed my speed down and revs probably went down too. Kept leaving a lot of 10 pins.

    • @LukeRosdahl
      @LukeRosdahl  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah definitely, if the ball can't get traction, it loses power into the pins. However, like I also said, you can't try to hook through it, and that's the major issue most people have with fighting wet conditions or carrydown. They look for more hook too often when they should be looking to straighten their angles up.

      @@LukeRosdahl I tried to get the ball to roll earlier and keep my hand behind it more when i noticed the slicker conditions. Of course using a skid flip asym pearl type ball with a medium RG core probably wasn't the best choice.

    • @LukeRosdahl
      @LukeRosdahl  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean if you can put some Jason Eubanks muscle into the ball lol . . but even the big guys that wrap on it can still relax a bit and smooth things out. EJ DESTROYS the ball at the bottom but obviously there’s no muscle there lol . . focus on fluid motion, you can use muscle without muscling the ball or clenching up

  • @xPandora__

    So if I come in light on a pocket hit and the pins scatter in that mixer kind of way I'm in the right spot on the lane and should keep throwing it there?

    • @LukeRosdahl
      @LukeRosdahl  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes and no . . you always want to line up to hit flush in the pocket, but when you miss some and still get those lighter hits to carry, that lets you know you're in good shape. Now sometimes that's the play, sometimes you'll find yourself in situations where maybe the pin spots are bad, maybe the mixer hit is carrying but more flush pocket hits aren't, then you'd actually play for the mixers intentionally. If you're in a spot where the mixer hit is carrying consistently, I don't see any reason to mess with that. The ultimate idea is to knock the pins down, not to look pretty or always put all 10 straight back. Some of the best bowlers in the history of the game are known for splashing stuff around and getting ugly looking carry . . but the pins go down and that's the name of the game.

      There's always a reason . . no such thing as bad carry. Might be frustrating sometimes, might get bad breaks or transition might cause an issue for a few frames, but if someone says they couldn't carry the whole night or the whole block . . that's a lack of effort/knowledge/experience, not bad carry. Plus you'll get good breaks with the bad ones, so they balance each other out, but no one seems to remember the good ones.
