Great discussion and a useful comparison. As an alternative to Sharp Practice, you could take a look at‘Fistful of Lead, Bigger Battles.’ It gives a similar size game to SP with a much lower rules overhead. It’s very flexible so good for many periods.

Thanks Sam! I appreciate the feedback. I have not heard of that rule set before. I'm looking forward to reading them! Have a fantastic weekend 👍

Good comparison my friend. I agree ultimately the Blue Tops give a quicker game and that’s not a bad thing!

That was good. Interesting on hearing the differences between the two as well as you and your friend's goal for more games and terrain. Looking forward to seeing the progress. I have Sharp Practice but no troops as I'm not sure which theater to go with. I'm leaning towards FIW (French Indian Wars), AWI or ACW...thought/thinking about Napoleonic era, but I'm working on large 10mm French, Russian/Austrian forces at the moment for ESR (Et Sans Resultat!), plus 15mm for O Group/ Battlegroup & 28mm WWII CoC/ BA.

Thanks, Doug! I hope it's thawing out up there. I am very interested in doing the French and Indian War at some point. That is a very interesting time period that I don't know a ton about. I will now have to read about ESR because I have never heard of it. So I thank you for the opportunity. And it looks like we are close to the same page on WW2. If Rapid Fire isn't the best fit, I will enjoy playing other rule sets until I find something that fits! Have a great week 👍

@@basement1908 It was and has been slightly warmer than normal up until yesterday when a blizzard came rolling in. But we also need it too for the moisture content.
ESR is different in that 1 infantry base is a battalion of 500- 600, artillery base is a battery of 6-8 guns, cavalry base is a squadron of 200-300. An infantry division could have 3 Regiments totalling 6 stands. A Feench Force could have 3 infantry divisions, artillery battery, cavalry regimemt of 4 stands. Your force is lead by a Force Commamder and each division is lead by a Formation Commander. The size of the battle is what can throw newcomers off. So when you look your V&F battle, ESR would be a 1/3 that size as the core element in ESR is the battalion. The game is based around issuing orders. But as the battle progresses and unit rack Fatigue, it hinders your Orders...and Fatigue is bad.

Yet another great episode sir!! May I recommend With Hot Lead and Cold Steel for big ACW battles? It's a new Osprey book, I'm really enjoying it... It can need bookkeeping, but it's a great game. Take care and I look forward to seeing your next battle

Awesome episode. Rules are the one time I allow myself to utilize my brain damage as an excuse!

Massive fan of your multi unit epic scale battles. Thoroughly enjoyed both the battles of Danville. Rule wise I preferred the more considered game play of Rebels and Patriots over the carnage of Men Who Would Be Kings. Looking forward to the stuff you have planned for the year ahead .
p.s. You mentioned Bull Run, I was surprised to recently learn that US Marines took part in this battle. Just wondering do you have any Marines in you complement of ACW troops ?

Thanks, Brother. I appreciate it whenever you pop in! I think I enjoyed Rebels and Patriots more myself. I did just pick up a copy of With Hot Lead and Cold Steal, so we will have to give that a try and see how it plays.
Right now most if my 6mm stuff I'd completely generic. We might just have to designate a unit as Marines for the Battle of Bull Run (or First Manassass, depending on where you live 😀)

I love it. Another set of rules I have never heard of. I will be looking them up now. I just picked up a copy of With Hot Lead and Cold Steel as well. Can't wait to try that one out too. Have a fantastic week my friend and thanks for the feedback 👍
