  • Rhythm problems can be frustrating, because they keep coming back over and over, like a boomerang (get it?). Sure... you can try anti arrhythmic medications, but they all have side effects, and none of them work all the time. Especially in elderly patients!
Please join Dr. Nick Tullo of ECG Academy in this Clinical LiveStream, where he will present a case of a 90 year old fellow with atrial flutter and a rapid ventricular response who was not doing well with medications. We will discuss the options to treat atrial flutter and what therapy we ultimately decided to go with. These Clinical LiveStreams are attended by a worldwide audience and are entertaining and thought-provoking educational opportunities for any healthcare professional who deals with cardiac patients.

I pray my 91 year old mothers cardiologist is as wise and ginger as you. This is her situation.

Pretty scary when your cardiologist isn't sure! Great presentation, thanks for sharing your expertise.

Interesting, I have personally been dealing with persistent atrial flutter for a couple years now, and everything tried seems to be failing. Keep in mind, I had a heart transplant roughly 22 years ago, and was generally doing well over the years with good exercise capacity. Unfortunately, it all started going downhill in May 2016 when I came down with sudden depression and later chronic fatigue palpitations, mostly, severe Pvcs that stopped me from working. They also made it difficult to bike or play tennis for any significant amount of time. I used to play for hours in the scorching heat. I did some research and asked them to test my calcium levels and parathyroid levels. They were certainly above the normal range, however the Parathyroid scan was negative so I decided to find another surgeon who doesn't care about the negative scans. The transplant team, did an ablation a couple years ago that seemed to work well, even though they weren't able to induce the Arrhythmia. At the time they also discovered a moderate amount of atherosclerosis but can't be physically treated. Atherosclerosis is also one of the symptoms of parathyroid disease. So after the ablation, I was doing really, but then later I started getting these Atrial Flutter episodes. They eventually gave me bisoprol to take as needed, which worked beautifully, as, I was able to kill it on my bike. Unfortunately this past couple weeks I have noticed it is completely ineffective taking higher, and higher doses. I certainly hope this flair up is nothing serious like worsening atherosclerosis. Pvcs are nasty, but permanent Atrial Flutter sucks even more. I hope they find the Parathyroid tumor that is causing my problems. Forgot to mention I have Rbb, also, and a Dead pacemaker from my original heart.
