Yes, very costly against good wrestlers. And foot fakes too, see at one minute mark and 220 mark among others in this excellent video.

Can't have bad shots if you don't shoot

1:32 crossfacing your opponent into a blast double seems like a weird option

With those fakes is there any advice from anybody on keeping them from re-attacking. I was taught to always keep a hand near the leg your faking with, to protect it from a counter shot and I’m curious what other people have been taught

I've been taught to keep your hands and head up and don't let your knee drop all the way to the mat. I think the biggest thing people miss on defending re-attacks is that they're expecting to either make their shot or the defender to re-adjust position and should keep their mind aware of what their opponent is doing with their hands after the initiate the fake

Example at 0:18; Braunagel drops his left knee to the mat on his shot, causing him to have to pick up his knee before he can move his right leg out of range and continue to circle. Cardenas gets an easy single leg because of this.

Another example at 2:18 with RBY and VA. Vito is a great wrestler, especially with his range. RBY underestimates this, and lets his knee and hands rest on the mat . Vito understands this and moves forwards with a perfect shot to the outside of the knee.

A tie up to a fake is harder to re-attack off of, otherwise not putting yourself in bad position just to fake
