    The D&D Hobgoblin diverging from British folklore stems from Tolkien taking the smol Brownies and Housewight helpers and making his Hobgoblins bigger and badder versions of goblins...who were also the Orcs.

    Hobgoblins (and Goblinoids in general) are one of my favourite parts of D&D for me. Their culture, temperament, etc, etc is just so interesting to me. One of my favourite characters I ever played was a Hobgoblin monk that ran a monastery full of Goblins.

    The thing with hobgoblins diverging from mythology is all because of Tolkien. See, although his orcs were interpreted as being different from goblins, in the original books, orc was just the elven word for goblin, so all goblins in middle earth were roughly man sized and buff, rather than their usual diminutive interpretation. And what's the bigger, meaner, more organized version of an orc/goblin? DnD Hobgoblins draw a lot more from the Uruk-hai, pretty much only borrowing the name from their original mythology

    • @bud389
      @bud389 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      D&D Hobgoblins have very little to do with Tolkien Hobgoblins. Orcs and Goblins aren't even related in D&D. Orcs in D&D were considered a completely separate race not just from goblins, but from humans and elves and dwarves as well.

      @@bud389 where do you think DnD got the idea from? That's his point, Tolkien popularized many things. He's the creator of the idea of "Elves"

    • @bud389

      @@subsume7904 Elves existed before Tolkien. The only thing Elves in D&D borrowed from Tolkien were their "types" (Namely Wood Elves and Gray Elves). Secondly I'm not sure what "idea" you're referring to. The idea of separate races? Because Robert E Howard did that before Tolkien.

    My first D&D character was a Hobgoblin Hexblade Warlock I named Mevrit, that we played all the way till lvl 20, ending the game just as Covid hit. A lot of fun being a hobgoblin, and that saving face ability came in clutch SO often. Worshiped the Eldritch god Hastur who gifted his followers with a piece of his yellow robe which would in turn be bound to a weapon to transform it into the hex blade itself. Based his voice on Zaeed Massani from Mass Effect, which i got pretty good at imitating as we went on.
    Super fun, and I would love to return to the character some day for some more epic level character adventures.

    i have a hobgoblin rogue character named Ronk and he's legit based on an uruk that kept killing me on shadow of war. yes his name was also Ronk. he was born to a shaman bloodline, but his weak magic forced him to join the legion. he served as a scout, but became insubordinate when a scarless (new to the legion so they have no battlescars. think "shinies" from Clone Wars cartoon". same concept) became captain of his squad and began making idiotic choices and ignored the advice of more experience soldiers. after Ronk's 6year term was over, instead of going back to a family that viewed him as a disappointment, Ronk left the tribe to prove himself in the wider world. Said wider world wasnt so forgiving, however, and Ronk soon was forced to use his scout training to steal and kill to survive. i have more on his backstory and a tie-end to why he became an adventurer, but i feel like this went on longer than necessary already so ill stop here.

He is actually an NPC that the players knocked out in the haunted house of Saltmarsh, then found out he wasn't all bad and gave him a second chance at life as a sailor aboard their vessel. I think hobgoblin is a very powerful player character race for casters. Light armor proficiency has the value equivalent of an extra feat if you don't already have it. +2 Con +1 Int are very relevant, especially to a wizard. Two martial proficiencies of your choice means you can wield a heavy crossbow and a rapier as martial backups in case the DM gets cute and throws some serious anti-magic mechanics your way. Saving face can be good, if you have many allies. Familiars are allies. Summoned creatures are allies. So again, another great synergy between this race and a wizard build.

    • @Rookzer0
      @Rookzer0  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great breakdown, hobgoblins are awesome for any combat heavy character but you make a great point about the armor. Nice work

    • @andrewpeli9019
      @andrewpeli9019 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Rookzer0 Light armor is great, but having light armor already means access to medium armor (and shields) is just one feat away. Moderately armored is an amazing feat if you can put yourself at 11 or 13 dex and then pick it up. You get the +1 dex from the feat, which brings your AC up +1, plus a shield that brings it up +2 more, plus you can now wear half-plate. That's a massive 19 AC that a hobgoblin wizard can have as early as level 4 with just mundane items. And a hobgoblin being a medium creature means you can actually carry this without pumping strength if you manage your equipment closely. On top of that... you're a wizard... you have shield for +5 AC as a reaction for a 1st level spell slot. Now the wizard went from the squishiest character on the team to conditionally the most tanky. I love the idea of a wizard necromancer decked out with half plate and his skeleton army by his side.

    Would make necromancer and number one would find a enormous creatures that's all bone and reanimat it and ride it insida in the ridcage. And a would let my goblin army have bone worlf and rid I sid them as well like tron bike. Build and create my own creatures like the uper body of a goblin and a body of wolf to make wolf goblin kentur. I can see them both in flesh zombi stil and all bone as well think that could be fun probebly more combo of creatures That could be made from diffent parts necromancy puppet builder giv goblins horns and tails bigger fangs and just be weird with it or jus transplant a Dwarf beard om some just to be a the c-word

    Currently playing a Lawful Evil Hobgoblin artificer ( Battle Smith) in an otherwise good aligned party of dwarves. He has a huge romantic thing for giants and it gets him into trouble

    I got a Hobgoblin cloistered scholar character who is a runaway Devastator. He hated every second of their military lifestyle and ran away with his spell books. Now he's constantly on the run from Iron Shadows for desertion.
