    1. Meg White had anxiety disorder - yet still played live in a two piece rock band in front of 100,000 festival goers - a few hundred times.
    2. Without Meg White there would be no Jack White. He'd be John or Jack Gillis
    3. He put her kit to his side - not behind him.
    4. They didn't use set lists.
    5. Jimmy the Exploder; The very first note of their very first album is her drums.
    6. Their on stage chemistry was undeniable.
    7. She was exactly the drummer that band needed. Steve's absolutely right. Anything more would be overkill. Jack's solo stuff proves that point. He wanted raw and she did her job with no formal training.

      There’s a reason why Meg is so derided for her drumming. There’s always some excited White Stripes fan that calls her a genius. See Drumeo video. The truth is she is a very basic drummer that is doing the best she can. She ain’t no genius of minimalism or primitivism. Her drumming fits the band’s sound. And it’s oK to enjoy it. I saw them in Atlanta during what was close to their last tour. I liked them a lot before I saw them but you would not believe the sheer force of them together onstage. I couldn't believe just two people could create such a feeling. Jack did go to the front to sing to the crowd at times but spent most of his time singing to/at Meg. Everyone in the crowd was going wild. They were a magical duo and I know, having seen them, that Meg WAS an equal force in the music they gave us. Good reaction and true.

    Thank you, Sir for appreciating Meg White, especially as a drum teacher yourself. I've seen so many drummers roll their eyes at the mention of Meg White's name and it always made me feel a certain way. I'll never forget her drums opening up their self titled album on Jimmy The Exploder. Suddenly rock and roll made total sense to me as a young girl. It also made an instrument like the drums which had seemed so inaccessible and boys only before feel inviting and empowering to the child in me who had always loved banging on things with sticks. Meg does divide people. Mostly into wizards and muggles. You either see the magic or you don't. I think she especially appeals to people who love the purity and rawness of music, which is the thing that no amount of technical skill can conjure. I've seen a great many technically brilliant musicians play, who've made me fee nothing. But Meg bangs on the skins and Jack plays a couple chords and my heart is moved. Go figure.

I am 54 and have graduate degrees. I am a mediocre drummer. But yes, I feel that I am better than meg. Any pop or rock drummer in a legit band can do what she does and a whole lot more. I stated my reasons. Read my other posts. Many people on here are angry. I am not. I like the white stripes. I just dont think she has very much genetic talent. Why? She has never showed it once. She has never done anything unique on the drums. She was in the band because Jack was her husband. Jack wanted the spotlight. And he got it. HollingsworthGroup Jack has played with plenty of other drummers. He still went back to play with Meg & would’ve continued had she not decided to stop. She has a certain lackadaisical style which is actually very difficult to pull of well, or at all. Listen to other drummers play White Stripes songs. It’s different. You can tell that it’s missing that ‘thing’ that Meg brought to the song. That’s a special gift. I also don’t think she’s the greatest drummer in the world, but she’s certainly very competent. Plus, I’m not the one leaving snarky messages all over the place. Why are you doing that? Think hard about it. I’d say it’s jealousy. But regardless, it’s YOUR problem, don’t force us all to deal with your insecurities, my guy...

    I learned about Jack White through the Raconteurs first, so to this day that is my favorite Jack White band, but I will say this about Meg White: Meg White was by far the best musical choice of Jack White's career. She cuts to the point on every song and always plays something fun. If you listen to Jack White's solo work, you notice pretty quickly that he likes to fill in space with every idea that comes into his head. The White Stripes were great because Meg kept that from happening and kept the songs the way they needed to be.
    That said, I saw the Raconteurs live last year on Patrick Keeler's Birthday (they were great), so even though I'm not a drummer I'm really looking forward to seeing the video that explores his style as well.

      @@Hollingsworth2781 "she could play a lot with a lot more sstyle if she knew how to" - you don't get what the Stripes were about....Jack called his label 'Third Man' for a few reasons (he's a Catholic), but mostly because the idea behind them was always 'three'....three verses and chorus', three colours, three instruments (including vocal), etc....he intentionally wanted to limit and box the artistry of the band, because Jack knows that (VERY often in music/art) 'less is more'. Therefor she was PERFECT for this band.
      Also, they NEVER had a set list, yet they would often switch songs MID song, and then double back to the original song (like a song within a song) and she would ALWAYS intuitively know when/how to switch to the other song (AND back again), UNPLANNED.
      Think of it this way....i'm a big fan of both Yes and Nirvana...technically, Yes is a WAY more skilled band than Nirvana...but who's the better band? Who was by FAR the bigger band (and at one point the biggest band in the world)? Tom Petty once said (paraphrasing) "all the best songs in the world have just 3 or 4 chords"....you need to think of Meg in that sense.

Those musicians are all a lot better than meg. Rock music can be simplistic. It does not have to sound like rush, dream theater, yes etc. I love straight pop music. But pretty much all the drummers in normal pop music are are talented than meg is. And even if meg was a good fit for jack's playing, it doesn't make her a good drummer. She is not. Almost all drummers think that she is not good player. Everyone here is probably sticking up for her because they are fans of the white stripes. That makes it hard to objective And I do believe that there are many drummers that would have helped the white stripes sound better. I know you are saying about yes vs. nirvana. Meg's playing was so approachable. I can't help but wonder how many people started to play the drums by following along with The White Stripes. Heck, I wish I knew about them when my kids still had their drum kit.

  • @matt09ward

    Shes very underrated. its not easy to play what she does. most drummers wouldn't be able to control themselves the way she does. the beats are simple but they are simple by design. shes also extremely locked in with jack, not locked in with time/click but with jack which gives the music a sense of breath and life.

    • @matt09ward
      @matt09ward 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      To illustrate her control. just look at what jack does from live performance to performance. he's always adding in little licks and riffs to the main riff. licks and riffs that to be honest dont really serve the song and most of the time makes it worse. as a musician of any instrument it is very hard to stop yourself from doing that. she has that control.

    I love Meg White and her contribution to the sound of her band. You have to recognize that sometimes it sounds like she has slight trouble with timing, but it’s part of what makes their music unique. If it’s deliberately a little off sync, then it’s genius. I love it. Thanks for the video.

  • @llywelyngruffydd8474
    @llywelyngruffydd8474 ปีที่แล้ว

    Her drumming was like a lot of garage or punk rock guitarists who had an amazing sound because they only knew one or two chords. They were creative within tighter confines and so what you got was rock that was stripped down to its most essential elements. That's what made it great.

    Steve, I agree 100% !! My wife bought me a drum set last year.... I'm 49 and trying to learn. Quarantine got me practicing more and it is getting a bit easier. But every once in a while I put on headphones and try to drum along to Meg.... just enjoying it and trying to keep up. I'm probably not even hitting the right skins and cymbals.... but I'm having fun and smiling.
    Also..... how the F is BlackMath so fast !!

    The first thing I do before watching a drumming video is check if the channel has covered Meg White and what their take is. If they do anything but praise her musical prowess I can't trust anything else they say. The White Stripes was the best show I've ever experienced. She is a pro through and through.

    If you don't mind, I will repost what I just wrote on another channel regarding Meg White. "Here's the secret to Meg's drumming, this from a professional musician. As Artur Schnabel once said (paraphrased), "it is not the notes, but the silence between the notes that defines good playing." What I love about Meg's style is that she is so loose. She has not one bit of tension in her whole body while playing. I thought she would slide right off her drum stool at times. That is the secret to superior accompaniment. Her playing is super relaxed and provides perfect support to Jacks solo work. This may sound simple to our ears, however, it is not at all simple, and even the greatest drummers in the world have difficulty with this. Their music, in various ways is very stretchy. This requires of an accompanist extreme perception, along with remaining very tight against the soloists expressions, which can vary, ever so slightly, or greatly, depending on hw the soloist feels at the moment of playing each note and each phrase. A good accompanist is a gem, and should be well appreciated. As to the not funny "joke" about her replacing Neil Peart, I read him speaking on his technique and how he matured and learned over the years to advance. He said that one of the most important things he had to learn (late into his career) was to loosen up. He spoke of rebuilding his technique after being involved with another drummer that he admired. Meg had this mastered.

The third piece, she put the BOOM in the room, and she makes it seem like there’s an orchestra on stage, she’s that into what’s going on with her band as a whole. Her band was one other dude. You don't always need to over complicate music by trying to crowd in too many notes. By playing in a minimalistic way you can give structure to a piece of music without making it feel claustrophobic.

    Spot on with every word. The White Stripes weren’t about flash and technique. They were about raw energy. Emotion. Most of The greatest songs ever written were simple. The songs you hum after hearing once are simple. The more your brain has to work to understand the song the longer it takes to connect. The more you have to deconstruct to understand the less impactful it is. Rock should connect at a primal level not cerebral. A simple drum kit making thousands of people jump like that? That’s rock and roll.
