The rainbow shiners are awesome. They're my favorite North American native. I'm always surprised that these aren't more popular in the hobby as a whole. They'd sell out quick if pet stores carried them. Also, in case you're interested, the taxonomy on rainbow shiners recently changed. They are now "Hydrophlox chrosomus" and not "Notropis chrosomus".

I'll preface with saying that I never bred darters, but I have kept them and studied them briefly during college. In the wild, they breed in the early spring and it seems to be temperature and light related. I live in Northern Ohio, and they are typically spawning in March/April. You'll want to have less light and cooler temperatures for several weeks and then slowly increase the temperature and lighting amount while feeding the adults. In the wild, they spawn in river riffles which are areas of very high flow with no sand or debris build-up. In the aquarium I would think a pea gravel bed with some slightly larger rocks mixed in would work with a powerhead directing flow right over top of it. As far as specific temperature ranges, I would say into the 50s would be good for the cool temp, and then slowly raising into the 60s. You will know they are ready when the females are gravid and the males are showing intense coloration. Hope this helps, and good luck!

I’ve read rainbow shiners don’t live long. They are very beautiful. It’s a beautiful and very natural looking tank!

I really want to set up a native tank outside, but I'd need a chiller to keep them cool enough. It's in the high 90's here with high humidity. I might be able to keep the cat shed cool enough. It does have a window unit, but it struggles during the hottest part of the day to keep the shed cool. I'll have to do temp tests throughout the day in the shed to see how the temps run. I really want a fish shed, so I can keep some of my favorite fish again. I've gotta talk my Mom into getting another shed in the yard.

But if they’re native, why would you need a chiller? 🤔 Just make sure the water is nicely aerated, and don’t put it in full sun. Keeping it inside during summer may be sketchy, unless there’s good airflow. I was thinking you’d have them outside for some reason… but something I’ve started doing is placing a hanging (HOB) filter on the long end of a tank, like horizontally, rather than in the back center… creates a longer, stream-like flow and better oxygenation and filtration. I also go one size higher than the tank versus the filter, if that makes sense. Like, use a "20" size filter for a 10-15 gal tank, a "30" size filter for a 20-gal tank, etc. etc. I’ve always done that and it’s great. It’s the poor man’s version of a canister filter. Lol. Then, at the opposite end of the tank, I usually put an additional sponge filter to aerate the other side.

Gorgeous fish! I have never owned Rainbow Shiners. I purchased Rainbow Darters at the FinDig, but the 3 males passed in QT. I have 2 spunky little ladies left in QT....but their coloration is nothing like the males.
