just purchased this exact watch (blue) and it is fantastic!!! silicone strap is very comfortable and will stay on this wonderful watch... was able to purchase at a kohl’s department store ( in the chicago area for, with sales tax included, $167 usd. It retailed for $295 usd plus tax but with the multiple sales kohls had at the time I got a price before tax of $154.68 usd!!! I always buy watches on line but stopped by the jewelry department at kohl’s and was surprised to see they had four seiko 5’s on display. had to buy it at this price!!!!
Dude I literally just bought the same watch at harem and Irving plaza kohl’s in chicago lol..was $275.00 on sale for $250.00 and they gave me more discounts, I walked out with it for $195.00…awesome watch and looks nice as all hell lol.
This is a nice looking watch, and I may have to buy one. I guess it's only a 100 meter depth since it's not a screw down crown. Not a problem for me. This would go nice with my Seiko Baby Monster white face that I've had for many years and completely enjoy wearing. Have several other watches from other manufacturers and rotate wearing them at different times. Can't go wrong with a Seiko.
I dont understand why its such a big deal the lack of s screw down crown and more water resistence, people that dive deeper than 100 meters will not be looking at a seiko 5 for that task lol. I love these watches as casual wear, good mechanical watches and with such a variety in design theres something for everyone!
@TIHS ON You are correct, at that time I was just starting my journey into watches and specs and that 100m WR doesn't really mean the watch is suited for actual 100m deep dives, which is why I found it bizarre that people were complaining so much about it. My original point still stands though, people who actually dive don't wear mechanical watches nowadays anyway they would use modern pro diving gear.

It’s a common misconception that divers rely on more advanced technology but that’s not the case, especially when learning how to dive. One reason for learning on mechanical watches is redundancy but the most important is safety. Plenty of professionals will agree but will also tell you some of the crudest forms of diving are a product of their vocation.
@@danonthestrings I just realized your comment is from two years ago. Anyhoo, there’s a correlation between water resistance and build quality or durability. Personally I’ve had watches in the past 25 years with depth ratings of 33ft to 4,000. There’s been condensation issues with each watch that’s under 100ft/300m as they’ve aged vs 300’/900m regardless of service interval. Specifically, higher end or “luxury” watches without screw down crowns. I’m trying out some sub 1k usd 200-300m wr and will get back to you in a few years. 😂

There was a channel here on youtube I think they were a Finnish couple they had this setup where they would test all sorts of watches in pressurised water environment, some of the results were interesting. Don’t remember the channel name though. Personally I would be afraid to even get a higher end/luxury watch in the water anyways, don’t care if it says 200m/300m lol I’d take my G-Shock swimming over anything else!
Great review as always. You should review a Citizen Promaster that competes with these Seikos. The automatic ones like the NY0091. I love those maybe even more than the new Seiko 5s.

I just ordered this blue one but on the blue NATO strap. I was eyeing the metal bracelet for a short time but I am glad I decided for the NATO strap. Usually, metal bracelets kinda look tacky, pretentious and even cheap when not worn on a high end luxury watch.
0:27 No they are not. That is the Turtle. The 5KX is a sports watch, but not a proper diver, and hence not intended as a true SKX replacement. It’s a Seiko 5 with the SKX case.
OES 25 you're right the 5 sport is no successor to the SKX ... I suspect that we will soon know the successor to the SKX ... I suspect that the prices of the 5 sport will fall to an acceptable level ... for now I enjoy the hype ! ... 😄
As I said before, I really like the styling and colour combination and contrast on this new Seiko 5 Sports. Technically it may be a mixed bag - better calibre but slightly worse diving specs - but I like it, nonetheless! Thank you for a valuable demo !
Orient Mako USA 2 or Orient Kamasu has what you are looking for. Honestly unless you're a Seiko fanboy, not sure why one would by this over the Orient.
Given the fact that it's a downgrade from the SKX and it's more expensive with cheaper straps, it doesn't make any sense at all. The movement can't justify it because you can buy those movements for next to nothing especially at volume.

Meh. I have one with the green dial. I paid 200$. I wouldn't pay anymore. I paid 210$ for my kamasu. Ten times a better watch. Orient is the new seiko.

In my opinion winding a watch is much better than SKX, either you have to wear it all the time or shake it if you don't want the watch to fit so you have to keep adjusting it. The Seiko 5 is nowhere near expensive, the price is perfect, it costs around $ 350 in Zagreb and I bought it right away because it pays off. Greetings from Zagreb
Found this for $178 from a gray market dealer and I've never bought a watch faster. I know snobs crap on this thing. Maybe the unwashed masses don't care about ISO dive specs, but maybe the unwashed masses understand what they actually want from a watch.
Good looking watch for sure. But based on other reviews that I've seen you got pretty lucky that everything lines up on yours. That plus the lack of a sapphire crystal makes it a no go for me at this price point. Truth to be told I won't be buying anymore Seiko's until they sort out their QC and quit sticking their hardlex crystals in to most of their sub 500$ watches.
It looks like Rado Captain Cook homage clearly. But I can’t do Hardlex ever again. It’s about as hard as a bar of Ivory. And push in crown?? Seiko has entered a new stage of production/marketing. Less for more. Get the Orient(Seikos sister house with in-house automatic movement) Mako XL luminous dial 200m depth mineral crystal and screw-in crown for 150 dlls. More for your money. The luminous dial is stunning.
I got one but the watch is too damn big! It hangs off my wrist with the slightest movement and I was afraid of that wanna watch first came out but I believed the hype. Not only that the bottom of the watch sticks out a couple millimeters so it doesn’t sit flush on your wrist there’s a overhang and this is in contrast to very expensive watches like a Rolex submariner where it just fits totally flush on your wrist and it’s not very tall as a watch.

I have three Seiko SKX watches. I love them all as well as my three other seiko diverse. This watch is not what SKX fans wanted. Although we got the upgraded movement (hacking and hand winding)
How about a sapphire crystal instead of a easy scratching hardlex? How about a milled clasp? But more importantly how about not taking away specs and then charging more for less!

There are other Seiko dive watches with the specs you desire. If you must have the SKX case shape and are fine with its inferior movement, you can always replace the crystal and bracelet with ones of your liking. Finally, how do you figure that Seiko is charging more for the 5 Sports than the SKX?? The msrp of the 5 is $295 and the SKX was around $365. So much misinformation flying around these watches...
You could pick up and still can’t pick up the SKX for just over $200… 100 feet of water resistance is not what you think… I urge you to take a look at what that really means as it is very misleading… What SKX fans wanted was a sapphire crystal, And hacking:hand winding...And keep it an ISO certified diver..:Maybe a little better bracelet...Instead it’s now fashion watch...and yes...It costs more...The SKX can still be had ( Still a lot of stock out there) For just over $200…
I don’t know if it’s bad. But mostly bracelets from Seiko are really bad in my opinion. I did get the chance to handle the mesh bracelet a few weeks ago. It is definitely acceptable quality.
Dear Sir, I respectfully disagree. This watch is not for me. It looses the beautiful Hasagawa Wave on the back. It looses its 200 meter Divers certification. And yet it costs more than a real Seiko SKX. Why didn't Seiko put the new movement in the SKX, charge 50 more dollars, and call it a day? It worked for the Porsche 911, which is about 70 years old in its various configurations.
As a owner off both the 5KX is the better watch! The movement is better id take a improved movement over a screw down crown plus drilled lugs anti magnetic applied markers improved bracelet over the older SKX. And as the other guy said the Prosex is their pro range now so the SKX is a gonna!!
I can see how this might be a tempting watch. But let's be honest, I can take my $285 (or $235 street even) and get more watch for the same money and get an actual dive watch. I feel like if I wanted a watch like this I could get an Invicta which actually might be a better watch for 1/2 or 1/4 the money and not feel a drop bad about it either!!
metatech totally agree, I purchased an invicta automatic diver with a seiko movement and it’s 200 meters water resistant for less than $80. Also I believe Drop has a glycine combat for $279 with an ETA movement I’m pretty sure.
It's about the overall feel not the specs. My glycine airman 42 is superior to the glycine airman 1 in every objective measure..better crystal, crown, movement decoration, bracelet, water resistance and yet the 42 stays in the drawer unloved while 1 gets worn proudly and demands a much higher price...buy the watch not specs

I won’t be buying this watch as it is more expensive than the SKX and far less capable. They took away 100 m of water resistance and the fact that the SKX with a certified dive watch...Still no sapphire crystal and a bracelet option Does terrible…With hollow and links and a crappy clasp...And that for 50 bucks more...Upgraded movement is nice But this just doesn’t cut it as a replacement for the SKX...

While I understand the attractiveness of highly spec'd equipment, I'd have to ask myself, what would I be giving up in aesthetics, convenience, serviceability, etc. I wasn't looking for another Sub copy and I liked the look of the SKX. I was considering buying one but I already have a 7s36 watch and while it's a very good time keeper, the lack of hand winding is a negative. Having both 7s36 and 4r36 watches, I find the 4r36 a clearly superior movement. A screw down crown adds no value for me as I prefer the convenience of the push/pull crown. Finally, considering I was able to buy the SPRD95 for under $180, it was an easy decision to pull the trigger on one.
All this whining about the watch not being able to deep dive? 99% of people are buying a watch because of the looks. It's waterproof enough. As for all the 'divers' a bunch of geeky losers that brag about nothing that anybody cares about...probably sci-fit geeks as well.
I woulden't count on that. I believe they will be a big hit with people who aren't too much into watches but who likes the aesthetics and the feel of diver watches.

Even Swiss-American "Invicta" use Seiko machine but they ruin it. Yet, crazy pricetag for European watches is a delusional investment. Irrational, just waste of money. They will drop drastically and turn to rusted metals here in world's richest nature on The Equator. Yet, they cannot survive outdoor activities here.
Invicta makes a great pro diver love mine and seiko movement and it’s done nothing but look and run great oh yeah and you can dive with it on ! It’s not iso but I’ve seen a guy diving around 5 meters and it worked great!

I think they are great! I've got like 6 or 7 200m dive watches... I've never been deeper than 15ft.
If I ever find myself down 200 meters I'll be checking my watch to see what time I died.

@@TimeAndCrown I already knew about the misalignment issues with seiko 5 watches before I bought the watch. Doesn't really bother me and I enjoy wearing the watch. Still in my honeymoon phase. Glad yours has no issues. Cheers.
Their not a replacement for the SKX they are their own watch. That blue ones nice I just bought the Pepsi on a as bracelet and they look so much better person...

Hey Anders...jeg er skal kobe min far en gave og overvejer enten dette her 5 Sports SRPD71K2 eller turtle SRP91-K1 save the ocean edition. Jeg kan ikke selv give gave da jeg er i udlandet, sa hvilket et ville du foresla en 70 arig mand som ogsa vinterbader til tider og mangler et godt ur?? Ved ikke om Turtlen bliver for bright at se pa i laengden, det meget blat. Begge har silicone rem hvilket er at foretraekke sa han ikke skal fixe remmen. Men ved ikke om S5 er for sporty? De er begge flotte og det sgu svaert at valge uden at sta med dem i handen. Haber du har mulighed for at give dit besyv inden imorgen da jeg skal ha det kobt inden da. Tak for gode revieews!!!!
Hej. Når han bruger uret i vand ville jeg vælge Turtle. Det har skruekrone, så han ikke kommer til at glemme kronen og dermed få vand i uret.

I have three Seiko SKX watches. I love them all as well as my three other seiko diverse. This watch is not what SKX fans wanted. Although we got the upgraded movement (hacking and hand winding)
What did SKX fans want?
How about a sapphire crystal instead of a easy scratching hardlex? How about a milled clasp? But more importantly how about not taking away specs and then charging more for less!
@@JohnBuckmaster-sw3wm The only "spec" inferior to this watch vs the SKX is the 100m reduction in water resistance , for which 99.9% of buyers have no need.
There are other Seiko dive watches with the specs you desire.
If you must have the SKX case shape and are fine with its inferior movement, you can always replace the crystal and bracelet with ones of your liking.
Finally, how do you figure that Seiko is charging more for the 5 Sports than the SKX?? The msrp of the 5 is $295 and the SKX was around $365. So much misinformation flying around these watches...
You could pick up and still can’t pick up the SKX for just over $200… 100 feet of water resistance is not what you think… I urge you to take a look at what that really means as it is very misleading… What SKX fans wanted was a sapphire crystal, And hacking:hand winding...And keep it an ISO certified diver..:Maybe a little better bracelet...Instead it’s now fashion watch...and yes...It costs more...The SKX can still be had ( Still a lot of stock out there) For just over $200…

I don’t know if it’s bad. But mostly bracelets from Seiko are really bad in my opinion. I did get the chance to handle the mesh bracelet a few weeks ago. It is definitely acceptable quality.

Dear Sir, I respectfully disagree. This watch is not for me. It looses the beautiful Hasagawa Wave on the back. It looses its 200 meter Divers certification. And yet it costs more than a real Seiko SKX. Why didn't Seiko put the new movement in the SKX, charge 50 more dollars, and call it a day? It worked for the Porsche 911, which is about 70 years old in its various configurations.

As a owner off both the 5KX is the better watch! The movement is better id take a improved movement over a screw down crown plus drilled lugs anti magnetic applied markers improved bracelet over the older SKX. And as the other guy said the Prosex is their pro range now so the SKX is a gonna!!
I can see how this might be a tempting watch. But let's be honest, I can take my $285 (or $235 street even) and get more watch for the same money and get an actual dive watch. I feel like if I wanted a watch like this I could get an Invicta which actually might be a better watch for 1/2 or 1/4 the money and not feel a drop bad about it either!!
metatech totally agree, I purchased an invicta automatic diver with a seiko movement and it’s 200 meters water resistant for less than $80. Also I believe Drop has a glycine combat for $279 with an ETA movement I’m pretty sure.
It's about the overall feel not the specs. My glycine airman 42 is superior to the glycine airman 1 in every objective measure..better crystal, crown, movement decoration, bracelet, water resistance and yet the 42 stays in the drawer unloved while 1 gets worn proudly and demands a much higher price...buy the watch not specs

I won’t be buying this watch as it is more expensive than the SKX and far less capable. They took away 100 m of water resistance and the fact that the SKX with a certified dive watch...Still no sapphire crystal and a bracelet option Does terrible…With hollow and links and a crappy clasp...And that for 50 bucks more...Upgraded movement is nice But this just doesn’t cut it as a replacement for the SKX...

While I understand the attractiveness of highly spec'd equipment, I'd have to ask myself, what would I be giving up in aesthetics, convenience, serviceability, etc. I wasn't looking for another Sub copy and I liked the look of the SKX. I was considering buying one but I already have a 7s36 watch and while it's a very good time keeper, the lack of hand winding is a negative. Having both 7s36 and 4r36 watches, I find the 4r36 a clearly superior movement. A screw down crown adds no value for me as I prefer the convenience of the push/pull crown. Finally, considering I was able to buy the SPRD95 for under $180, it was an easy decision to pull the trigger on one.

All this whining about the watch not being able to deep dive? 99% of people are buying a watch because of the looks. It's waterproof enough. As for all the 'divers' a bunch of geeky losers that brag about nothing that anybody cares about...probably sci-fit geeks as well.

No Swiss, No American, No French/Italian/German/English, Generally no western brands for watches for me. Even Swiss-American "Invicta" use Seiko machine but they ruin it.
Yet, crazy pricetag for European watches is a delusional investment. Irrational, just waste of money.
They will drop drastically and turn to rusted metals here in world's richest nature on The Equator.
Yet, they cannot survive outdoor activities here.

Invicta makes a great pro diver love mine and seiko movement and it’s done nothing but look and run great oh yeah and you can dive with it on ! It’s not iso but I’ve seen a guy diving around 5 meters and it worked great!

no screw down crown. no iso certification and 100 mtr so only swimming maybe light snorkeling.if it is about the fancy colors maybe seiko should have offered the skx with more color options as this lower grade 5 is the same price as the better rated SKX. if you now want a diver you have to go to turtle or prospex for at least 150$ more. I bet seiko will loose customers to citizen and Scurfa.

The Seiko 5 is a great way to get an affordable quality watch from a historic watchmaker. These new releases can already be had for less than $180. I don't think there is much to be disappointed about here. To the contrary, actually.

A "classic" that literally everyone complained about and spent $200 on top of the purchase price to mod everything on it to make it "better".
