    I'm worried about Waves. If they continue to sell their plugins with the paint so deteriorated, it's very likely that they are also saving on screws, metal chassis, leds, faders... Did you notice if the knobs are wobbling?

    I think the reason so many plugin companies want to have analog looking UIs is mainly because thats what impresses clients when they come into your studio and see your progress. Even if you don't have expensive hardware, at least they want to feel like you do. I think if you were to do a test showing two masters, one done with purely digital plugins and then one with analog emulation plugins, even if you did a intentionally poorer job with the analog emulation master, the client would prefer it since they can see all the analog gear that that think sounds great rather than a flat utilitarian based UI.

    The unit is modeled after actual hardware so it's really not expecting levels like you're feeding it. You need to back off the input gain going into the strip; I turn down as much as 10-15db if it's a "hard hitting" electronic or metal kind of thing. Then the initial behavior of the compressor/limiter isn't so extreme. It was designed to handle levels that would be going from tape masters to vinyl cutters. You can adjust the ratio and "mix" knobs until you get the gain reduction you want. The mix knob isn't the full audio into the plugin, it's just a blend of the input into the compressor and the output, so it can be used to compress very lightly. You can do all your loudness crap after the TG desk. It'll sound better and perform better if you gain stage. Also, each module has an expanded version if you click the upper right hand button. That way you can get more detailed with the EQ and limiter adjustments. My only complaint is that I wish the GUI was a little larger.

    The reason for having Linear Phase filters for the Sidechain is because Phase = Time, if the filters are not linear phase some frequencies would be delayed and that will affect how the compressor reacts to the audio. That being said Analog sidechains filters have never been linear phase and it doesn't seem to be much of a problem. But 6db/oct filters have much less phase distortion than 48db/oct filters and this could be the reason for going Linear Phase here. I also find 48db/oct on the sidechain quite a strange choose.

    • @andresnol
      @andresnol 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      i think you are not entirely correct on the time=phase statement. for example: zero latency eq does not create latency yet causes phase distortion on the affected frequency. in fact in a way it is opposite. linear filters need time for processing so actually they cause timing issues which is fixed with delay compensation.

      Also, tons of people are just fine with using their mouse or even trackpad/screen as an input method, so why wouldn't VR be capable of extending your equipment?

  • @TheIArocks

    The VU meter is usually not just there for shits and giggles but it's kind of a great tool. Since they are modeling analog hardware and its distortion characteristics, there is a certain level where the parts start to distort, which is usually when the VU meter hits 0 and above on the -18 setting. Now you saw that your level was pretty high since with the input level set to 0 your compressor was working pretty hard and you heard distortion right when you engaged the input module's filter. So you had a gainstaging problem which you could have identified with the VU meter calibrated to -18 (or whatever else Waves recommends).
    Cheers

    lol great video my guy. I'd you might want to use audio that's not been processed already. That track used already had it's peaks processed (hence why you couldn't get a "dirty" mix). When you activated the compressor. The levels were so loud it was reducing the gain and squashing the mix. They used that compressor to boost (or upwards compress) the volume of smaller peaks. Waves actually has a plugin that prepares the track for mastering for you called "WLM" or you could use IM Pusher's peak "in" peak meter. Also, you could prepare the levels thru the phase module or slide the filter module to the beginning of your mix.

So the 'headroom' that they give you is basically a colour level. All of the waves compressors sound awful if you run them hot to my ears.

    On the flip side guys like Dave Pensado and Serban Ghanea, really tons of top mixers use waves plugins and work in the box (and out) and their credits are easily researchable. I think this young man works hard on his videos and prob his mixes but as someone who has worked very heavily on a ton of film and television stuff and a hand full of label/artist projects I have found that the arguments he is making are really not compelling to me. It seems a bit biased/click baity. Sometimes he isnt familiar enough with the tools to make judgements, other times he uses source material that creates an inherent bias or worst case scenario for judging the tools. I am just curious what qualifies him to make these judgements? Honest question no hate

I've noticed that under most every one of this guy's videos he has people pointing out that he doesn't even know how to use the plugins / equipment that he's giving an opinion on, so maybe you should be telling HIM to "do research" first before "hating" or passing judgment on products that he's not fully familiar with... Failing to do so makes him come off a bit irresponsible and unprofessional, unless you take into account that he himself is obviously being introduced to the product for the first time and is just poking around with it.

    This chick can really mix a track!!!
    But really...I don't know why Waves gets such a bad name by some of the critics. I've seen some of the biggest professionals on the PLANET use Waves plug ins on huge commercial successes. I used them almost exclusively for a long time as well and made GREAT sounding tracks. Do I use UAD, Fabfilter, Soundtoys Arturia, softtube, Brainworx, black rooster, Valhalla and on and on...YES I've used em ALL. But Waves has some bitchin plugs...their Deesser is still one of the best..works better than fabfilters in my book. Their Renaissance series is the shiz. The Rcomp is epic for vocals...the Eq. Then you have the Waves L2...L3...and their Abbey road stuff like this is bitchin. They really upped their game with this package. LOTS of mojo for your money in my book and I've used em all. Meh....whatever...if it sounds good to you that's all that matters.

    I do have a rebuttal to your understanding of using a "analog looking" plugins.....I deff think part of the enjoyment of use, is the UI & how it "feels", part of the romantism is from the "look". If I use a "modern" style plugin......I dig a more "futuristic" style UI. I, personally love the look of the analog "simulations". Good stuff Brother.

    Perhaps one day, a GUI will be available that will let you actually reach into and through the screen, that will allow you to feel and turn knobs or push actual faders, or, even replace the virtual rack screws that you always seem to obsess over. Hell, maybe one day you’ll even be able to touch up those scratches in the paint of the virtual faceplates on the GUI’s, to prevent them from rusting.
    I know that when I’m considering a plug in - no matter how good it sounds - if the virtual rack screws aren’t correct, well, that’s always been a deal-breaker for me.

    • @peterbrandt7911
      @peterbrandt7911 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's true for any analog gear as well. E.g. if you set the threshold too high on a gate, you cut maybe some signals. Same is true for eqs, compressors, fx, anything. I own a vast amount of plugins, many by Waves and if you are willing to listen, they do their job. Countless records were and are made utilizing them and many only in the box. This is no proof, of course, but it's at least a signal. I highly doubt, that all these people are worst musicians, mixers or producers, than you and me.

    Honestly the Abby Rd Mastering Chain not bad at all. Especially for the money.
    I much rather slap Plugin Alliance's bx_digital_v3 (which always sounded like a code name).
    The bx_digital_v3 is super powerful and the stereo width knob makes it worth the money you pay for it alone. It has dynamic eq and mid/side processing and a bunch of other bells and whistles.
    But for the love of God, ONLY get it when it's on sale. You don't want to spend $299, even if its worth the money. I got mine for around $80, since I bought the Maag EQ (their 2nd best plugin) and another plugin.

    You can use this Abbey Road. Just keep the knobs around the same place. But, lower your bass. Then get yourself a plugin called Endless Smile and Fat Sausage plugins (both from Dada Life for 60 dollars) to boost it to the level you talk about in the video. Here is the link for this Abbey Compressor. This is cheap but it includes in the chain the Curve Bender that cost between 5,000 to 6,000 dollars to buy the actual hardware. It's in this plugin for only about 50 dollars. www.waves.com/plugins/abbey-road-tg-mastering-chain and here is the link for the other 2 plugins I mention. tailorednoise-downloads.com/DadaLifePurchase.php
