    Their voices ARE ridiculous!!! Each member of this group has an incredible voice, immense talent and could be a star soloist all on their own. When they combine their voices and talents, the sum of the whole is absolutely incredible. If you go back to the beginning when they competed on TV (Mitch, Kirsti, and Scott were 19) you will see the group when it first got together ..... and they were great even then! Their Christmas carols and songs are legendary, they make the covers they record better than the originals (INMHO) and their original music is fantastic. You've got at least 10 years of music to explore..... When you see them perform in concert, they sound EXACTLY like they do on their videos. It's not a trick. It's Pentatonix. Be warned, you'll say "I just want to hear this one song," and hours later you'll realize you are addicted. You will have become a Pentaholic like so many of us!!!

    If you hadn’t heard before, this Daft Punk medley cover was done in Avi and Kevin’s closet and the video was done in their kitchen! They shared a place when they first arrived in L.A. after the Sing Off win. Mitch and Scott shared a place as well-Kirstie had her own place. They produced this video for basically $400! There were ancillary charges, but the basic product was $400, and for this, they won their first Grammy! This group of lovely, loving people were a serendipitous gift to us all! They had a basso profundo with contra bass low range and an authentic countertenor with an exceedingly high tessitura. The Trio which includes countertenor, Mitch Grassi, Scott Hoying, baritone with a huge range, and Kirstin Maldonado, mezzo soprano with a big range as well-all of them have been friends since they were 10 years old!

    What's most amazing to me is how they sound just as good and sometimes better in person. Their parts are so intricate that if anyone loses focus and forgets to enter at the precise second, it will show.

    This was recorded during their lean years, after Sony dropped their contract. They were recording themselves anywhere they could find good acoustics and posting to TH-cam, living on whatever contributions they could get from their fans.
    This had a budget of $400, which went for makeup (presumably including the contact lenses and blue wig), one ring light, and editing software. They recorded the audio in the closet in Mitch and Scott's apartment (for the acoustics), recorded the video in a kitchen, and then edited it together and added the visual special effects. {No, they didn't change the audio - Avi's voice really does go that low. His lowest notes have been known to blow out speakers in live performances.}
    And it won them their first Grammy, in 2015.

    • @margretrosenberg420
      @margretrosenberg420 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And based on another comment, I may have been wrong about the editing software; apparently they spent some money to have it edited professionally. Given the results (stunning visuals), I'd say it was a good choice.

    Your viewership will grow exponentially with every PTX reaction you post. We Pentaholics like to follow the Pentatonix reactors.
    CORRECTION: Kevin is a tenor when he's not beatboxing. Avi and Scott handle the low end, though it's primarily Avi.

    Don't know when you are ready to see them as they are today. When you are I would suggest THE PRAYER. It's very recent and although it was released as part of Christmas it is not just a Christmas time only song. I think it is a great listen and the visuals are good too.

    They've 3 Grammy award wins in their earlier years and this was Grammy win number 1. Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy is number 2 (no words...no problem said PTX) and a collaboration with Dolly Pardon of Jolene. Daft Punk was filmed in Avi Kaplan's and Kevin Olusola's apartment. Insane amount of talent in this group. thanks for the reaction. :)

  • @charlottevan_8
    @charlottevan_8 2 ปีที่แล้ว +46

    As someone said, Avi's voice is indeed that low. He was trained as a Basso Profundo in college (as an Opera/Classical Voice major), and his normal speaking voice is low enough that he had to train himself to speak in a higher register in order for people to hear him more clearly. You should react to his solo work, the majority of which is original. While most reactors start with his most successful song so far, "Change on the Rise", you could also start with his latest release, "First Place I Go". As a solo artist, Avi has become known for his lyrics that address depression and anxiety, with life-affirming results. His style is basically Folk/Americana, with a touch of Country and Blues here and there.

    You mentioned Kevin’s deep voice. Actually he is a tenor. It is Scott who does the bass whenever Avi/Matt is singing. There has only been one member change. Matt took over as bass when Avi left in 2017.

    I loved that you learned their names so early on your PTX journey. They are like family to us Pentaholics and we are like family to them, and you learn family members' names, right? Avi needs no help going low. Avi mentioned "Run to You" at the end which is an original of theirs. It's one of my faves of theirs. If you like 5-part harmony, check out the video. If you like it, check out the video for a recent release "My Heart with You". Also 5-part harmony, and it is an old song that inspired them to write "Run to You". You'll see the similarities. Thank you for your reaction. I look forward to your next PTX reaction.

    Yes after 7 years Avis mom had cancer and they were constantly on the road touring all over the world and He needed to be home more and then do his own music
    He left friendly and then they found Matt who was a big PTX fan and he had just graduated from Berklee School of music. Matt is a happy person and very good bass

    If you ever want to see Pentatonix rap, react to "Can't Hold Us". Matt replaced Avi in 2017. Scott, Mitch, and Kirstie went to high school together and sang together as a trio in numerous performances throughout high school. After graduation they wanted to compete in "The Sing Off" but were told they needed 5 people. Scott found Avi from a friend and he saw Kevin beat boxing on TH-cam. They both agreed to join and the first time they ever sang together was the day before they competed in 2011. They won the 2011 Sing Off title.

    Pentaholics are obsessive compulsive. If we see someone is first time reacting to Pentatonix we all rush over to watch the unsuspecting victim get Mitch slapped and trip down the rabbit hole. Everyone swears they hear a bass cello or guitar. Nope, that's Avi. Everyone says there must be drums. Nope, that's Kevin. Everyone says it's different people. Nope, that's Mitch, he's a chameleon and you never know he's going to be next. (Kevin is a talented cello player, when they aren't using Avi for it. In two or three of their pieces he plays and beat boxes at the same time. They call it celloboxing.)

    This won a Grammy, and word has it that it only cost $400 and was filmed in closet. Avi is the only one who left. He was replaced by Matt....hand-picked by Avi. Avi's voice is real.

    • @sharonsmith5296
      @sharonsmith5296 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      not really hand-picked by Avi

    • @perfectkismet
      @perfectkismet 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The sound was recorded in a closet, the video was done in the kitchen... but the $400 was for the supplies and setup, they did have Fifgen film it and edit it professionally.
      And as someone said, Matt wasn't hand-picked by Avi. PTX give Ben Bram credit for finding Matt, because he apparently convinced Matt to audition. But the whole reality is that Matt sent an audition tape just like 50 or 60 other applicants, without knowing what he was auditioning for. A talent company was hired to go through the tapes and narrow it down to 8 applicants who were asked to audition in person with the band (which is when they found out what they were in for). The group said any of the 8 would have worked, but they chose Matt for his energy and personality. Matt said he heard nothing for 3 months after the call-back, then in September they asked if he could relocate to LA on 2 weeks' notice. They had him in the studio the day after he arrived... He was basically a trial-basis "guest artist" on their Christmas tour and was made an official member in February 2018 when they renewed their contract with RCA.

    Avi is a basso profundo which is deeper than a bass. He has been known to blow out sound systems. He also has overtone which hich means can sing two notes at one time. Mitch is a counter-tenor. This won their first Grammy. It was filmed in the kitchen recorded in the closet on a $400 budget. That's how you win a Grammy the Pentatonix way. Avi left the group in 2017 for personal reasons although they remain on good terms and is replaced by Matt. Do make it a point to check out Avi's solo work. I would start with change on the rise

    Pentatonix almost always arrange their own songs, often with Ben Bram who they refer to as their "6th member". Ben's a guy Scott met in the a capella community in his short stint at college. He has been with them from the start, is credited as conceiving of the idea for them to audition for The Sing-Off with Scott, finding Avi for them and later convincing Matt to audition. He also produces a lot of their songs. Ben won their two arrangement Grammys with them (the 3rd Grammy was for a performance) - and one of those two Best Arrangement, Instrumental Or A Capella Grammys was for this song.
    I made a list of all the PTX songs I've found and made it public, if you're interested. It has a lot of other semi-useful information thrown in. Since TH-cam tends to block outside links, I made a throwaway "video" and linked the Google Sheet in the description:

    Avi's voice is that deep. Watch the live version of Hallelujah, the Christmas Special which you can compare with the official video you saw earlier. It lets you see more clearly who is singing what, such as Scott singing bass whilst Avi does his solo. I find this concert amazingly impressive.
    Also you should watch The Sound Of Silence which is when the new bass Matt gets his first major role. He is also great as a replacement for Avi.
    Bohemian Rhapsody and Mary Did You Know are also brilliant and have Avi. The Prayer and 90's Dance Medley with Matt are just as good.

    Pentatonix takes pride in not doing anything in their recordings/videos that they cannot reproduce perfectly in one of their live shows. In the case of this work, it won their first Grammy and was produced in one week, with a budget of $400 using Avi's closet as their sound booth. In the costuming, Kevin's eyes were too sensitive for him to wear the blue contacts and so he is wearing the visor. If you look closely, you can see that Avi's eyes are red due to the irritation produced.

    As for the smiles, it was probably a coincidence that the editor chose frames for that exact place in the video where they were both smiling. As Scott said as they received their 1st Grammy, they recorded it in a closet and filmed it in a kitchen at a cost of $400.00. So I'm fairly sure they filmed each person separately (they more than likely did not have any really great camera equipment).

    There are plenty of live versions of their music available, so you can observe that their ranges really are that way. For this kind of video from them, the parts are recorded one at a time and brought together in the video edit, but virtually every one of their songs can be performed live, together. For PTX live, see (with Avi) - Popspring 2016 th-cam.com/video/7GMHqYxpnzk/w-d-xo.html / (with Matt) Come all Ye Faithful from the BYU Christmas Under the Stars performance this past autumn - th-cam.com/video/lbWwJIMQV3k/w-d-xo.html About recording etc.: See the Making of Evergreen (2022), th-cam.com/video/M60SKKkQLqo/w-d-xo.html ... note that the latter video will contain spoilers for the songs from the Evergreen album, including The Prayer, I Saw Three Ships, I Just Called to Say I Love You, and others,

    My understanding is they will record a whole song in one take...several times and pick the best one. The video is filmed later much like any movie or tv show. This particular early song was recorded by them in a closet. The filming in the kitchen. Then a video editing company took it from there. And on to a Grammy.

    They arrange their own stuff. If you watch them on the song off you can see some clips of them working on arranging.
    This song was filmed using $400!! absolutely unbelievable! I heard it was filmed in one of their kitchens and recorded in a closet.

    Enjoyed you first two reactions and it looks like you may have figured out the pausing / video alteration formula to keep from getting blocked. As for recommendations, I have my favorites but when you are getting started I think it's best to look through their catalog and pick something that looks interesting to you. They do covers of pop songs, from different decades, and have two albums mostly of their original songs. They are known by a lot of people mostly for their Christmas recordings / videos.

    There is a huge number of live recordings from PTX and they are really good at showing what they sound like away from the studio. So questions about post production and such are best answered by hearing them live.

    Kevin is not the bass singer. Avi is the Bass singer, who later got replaced by a man named Matt. In Hallelujah, Scott took over the bass while Avi sang his verse.

    I just saw this for the first time yesterday, and I think you'd like to see it. It's Pentatonix's official video of _Dancing On My Own,_ by Robyn, and they recorded it just after Avi left and before they'd found Matt. They meant it as their "Goodbye" to Avi.
    Despite having only four members at the time, it's still in five part harmony, because Kevin's cello is standing in for Avi (with Kevin still doing his beatboxing thing at the same time - he calls it celloboxing).

    Kevin the beat box is a tenor. Scott is barratone and bass Avi is the main bass

    When they have a video like this one, they are all filmed individually singing their parts, and do multiple takes to get everything right. Then the video is edited together, so you might see a shot of Mitch from take 1, with Scott from take 3, etc. If you look at their videos, it's pretty obvious that there are multiple takes, since their actions don't match up exactly from one shot to the next.
    But they come into the studio very prepared, and an interview with a couple of the recording engineers said that they couldn't remember them needing more than 4 takes, and usually the last couple of takes are just to see if they can make an already good/excellent take even better.
    If you'd like to see/hear a more technical analysis from a singer's perspective, I recommend Peter Barber, an operatic bass singer who makes videos that are both informative and entertaining. You can see his analysis of Daft Punk medley at: th-cam.com/video/rO4fW2_StjU/w-d-xo.html

    Until you get used to Mitch's 'style' you may think, judging by appearances, that there is another member who replaced him. Mitch has no fashion direction but his own. His weight fluctuated for a short period. His hair, both facial and head, changes all the time in cut and color. Kirsty changes her style quite a bit, works out a lot and had her lips plumped several years ago. She's very short and wears platform and high heeled shoes, which brings her up to Mitch's height, because of optics when they perform or create videos. Matt brings a lot of musical talent to the group dynamics. He is a fun loving guy who just got married. Kevin is a force all on his own. Check out his solo version of DOWN th-cam.com/video/IGjg193h4Ok/w-d-xo.html Most have solo videos. Scott and Mitch had a channel together called Superfruit, videos are still up. Can you tell that I am a lonnnnnng time Pentaholic? Ha!
