  • I show you my techniques on how not to freeze on an air mat while camping in the cold. Air mats are very nice for camping. They make for a great night of sleep. However, a camping air mattress can also cause you to be very cold at night. I explain the reasons for this and give you several ways to solve your cold night sleep problems on backpacking air mats.

Yep. In warm weather my foam pad goes under the inflatable, for additional puncture protection; in cold weather it goes on top.

Ah, the puncture resistance issue. Always fun.

Thank you! I will experiment with where I put the closed cell part of my winter sleep system. I would not have thought of this on my own. Better to think this through when it is not super cold.

I've tried on top and bottom and the foam on top was way warmer for me.

Thank you, Aaron, for sharing your knowledge/experiences & ways to reduce sleeping on cold surfaces. I can attest to the excellent insulating qualities of the R6.9 rated XTherm air mattress as clearly being the best for MEeee & the conditions I encounter when overnighting.

In Europe people also put insulated aluminium foil on the floors of their tents in winter, together with an air-mat and closed cell foam mat.

    • @ALinsdau

      That's a great idea!

I contacted a manufacturer of bubble foil with aluminium surface to ask about their R value. The reply was that it’s R 0.1 in terms of conduction. But if you lie on the silver surface with no insulation between you and it the reflection of your body heat will feel like R 1.0. Don’t think it works!!
